“Look back, and consider both how quickly all things that are, are forgotten, and what an immense chaos of eternity was before, and will follow after all things.”

  6. This quote from The Third Book in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius hit home for me today, as I struggle to stay on task and avoid the distractions of the news commentators and social media influencers. "Spend not the remnant of thy days in thoughts and fancies concerning other men, when it is not in relation to some common good, when by it thou art hindered from some other better work."

He goes on to exhort us to spend less time thinking about ideas that are "idle or impertinent...especially whatsoever is curious and malicious" so that we can converse in a way that is "sincere and peaceable" and "free from all contentiousness, envy, and suspicion."

I shall endeavor to take these suggestions to heart.

  11. Tonight I enjoyed this passage describing an atheist’s view on miracles in Richard Dawkins’“The God Delusion”: “If there is something that appears to lie beyond the natural world as it is now imperfectly understood, we hope eventually to understand it and embrace it within the natural. As ever when we unweave a rainbow, it will not become less wonderful.”

  13. Today I read a message from Richard Rohr that inspired me to ponder the roles of prophets, priests, and politicians in shaping our worldviews.

TL;DR: “The only way evil can succeed is to disguise itself as good. And one of the best disguises for evil is religion.” No humans have all the answers to the questions we seek. Let’s lift each other up so we can all reach our full potential as spiritual beings.

  22. My favorite phrase so far from Tom Rapsas' book "Wake Up Call" is "finding the sacred in sandwich-making"—taking the time to pause and appreciate the moments during our busy days that might otherwise go unnoticed. It's so easy to just go through our days on automatic pilot, but by slowing down we can find opportunities for meditation and for connection with others.

  24. I was recently inspired by a quote from Robert Wolfe's book "Ramana Maharshi: Teachings of Self-Realization". Ramana is quoted as saying, "Only the absolute Being is real." In Episode 13 of Spiritual But Not Religious, I discuss the meaning of the quote and how it applies to my own life. I hope you find it inspirational.

  27. "The Self, or God, is not somewhere else—but is inside each of us. In loving oneself, one can only love the Self. Love itself is the 'form' of God." ~Ramana Maharshi

I read this in Robert Wolfe's book "Ramana Maharshi: Teachings of Self-Realization". This is a concept I've felt for most of my life. I'm not sure how or when this became clear to me, but it's nice to see it expressed here.
