  2. Personal evolution often comes through conflict, distance, and change. This reflection explores how shifting beliefs and experiences—sometimes shaped by separation or exile—can transform identity, deepen awareness, and redefine what we stand for in life.

  10. 7 and 13: Unlucky, Lucky, and Everything In Between

Numbers are strange little markers in our lives. Most people see them as simple counters, dates, ages, or statistics. But for me, two numbers have taken on lives of their own: 7 and 13. Most would consider 7 lucky. A number that appears on dice, on slots, in myths and stories, bringing with it a sense of magic, of chance in one’s favor. And 13? The classic “unlucky” number, feared by hotels, shunned by superstitious traditions, a number that seems to drag bad fortune in its wake. Yet, […]

  23. The reality is that the overall picture, the entire world, past, present, and future, is grim and that we're here for no particular purpose and that there is no way to fix things in a way that is both meaningful and lasting.

Look at physics and you'll understand where we came from and what we are. There are two explanations. The story that involves an old man with a beard and a robe is false. The other one means it was guaranteed that we'd exist. However, it also means that we're not significant and the only purpose, to the world or to our lives, is the purpose that we create.

The flip side is that the last part is possible. With purpose, too, it's possible to put a life that isn't working in order. There is satisfaction in a life that has purpose and is in order. One can even start to enjoy the small things again.

"What's next" on an individual scale could involve, if it doesn't already, unemployment, becoming a transient, and facing the fact that some around you, including people you might have trusted, have no internal life, no reflection, and don't measure up to the standard of a good dog or cat.

So, what purpose is there? The purpose is to make it to the finish line, to live life on one's own terms to the extent possible, and to be useful to one's self and to others up to a point.

It's helpful, but not enough, to remember the parable of the man with no shoes. Don't turn to religion, the opium of the people and one of the two most concentrated sources of hatred and brutality in human history. Nor to alcohol or recreational drugs. They're not much different than the final exit, another path that I feel is a waste and inappropriate.

Speaking personally: I'm not a Buddhist, though a coven of literal witches once accused me of trying to be a bodhisattva. I'm viewed more often as either positive and useful or as an Insane Satan. Not the regular Satan, but the heavy-duty model. It's about 50-50 for the two perspectives.

Based on my own life, my advice includes four words, do what is possible. Measure your worth on that scale.

Be useful, but in balance. Don't expect people to be grateful for your role in their works or their lives. Or even to acknowledge it. It's common that people will rewrite history. Do expect people to lie as though the truth is the most disposable item that there is. However, make truth one of your own cornerstones.

If people lie to harm you, remember, forgiveness without change is for chumps. I intend no offense to "Tiptoe through the Tulips" types. However, it's an invitation for others to rewrite history and that's an affront to the truth.

One shouldn't dwell each day on the events of a lifetime. However, a lie is a debt to you. The debt should be collected if and when circumstances permit.

I've collected such debts myself. Not all, but a few. In short, one looks forward and one looks back and does what is possible to put things right in both directions. To put things right is part of the purpose.

The loss of a relationship or even just an association can be a major blow. It happens and there is little that can be said to soften the blow.

Look for people, in any type of association, who are steadfast and value them. They're as rare as any precious metal. Be steadfast yourself to them. But remember that you owe little to people in general except for the truth and the willingness to be useful up to a point.

Decades ago, about 50 years, I read an article -- it was in print, there was no Web -- about soldiers who had been prisoners of war in World War II.

The officer in charge of one group noted that the group hadn't "let itself go". They'd shaved, had kept their living quarters in order, etc. This type of group, he said, did better than others because letting one's self go is a step towards giving up.

There is something to that. I was in a fairly brutal situation from 2012 to 2013. During that period, my bed broke. I just used the broken bed to the extent possible. It didn't seem worth the trouble to address the issue.

I've wondered, this year, if I'm headed towards that state of mind again. Writing this has made me decide to spend the rest of the day on putting things physically in order.

    A TODO list is recommended.

Eat well but lightly. Exercise is good. Work towards your goals, whether they be those of a bodhisavatta or an Insane Satan or both.

I noticed the opening post at a moment where I was reflecting on life myself. So, I've written up how I look at things and here it is. I don't know if I can live up to this myself. But I have a better picture now of what I'm trying for.

  25. 2/12 I haven't experienced what I'd call true fun during this journey. There have been fleeting moments where I could momentarily rise above the physical and mental stresses of living this life. #LifeJourney #RawTruth

  29. Embrace the beauty of connection and the journey of life. This stunning photograph captures a moment of warmth and companionship against a breathtaking sunset backdrop. A reminder that every step we take is shared with those we love.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end
