I recently heard that comedian and political commentator Bill Maher received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour at the Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.1

I was wondering, Mark, if you know about this latest award of the prize? I know you’re long dead, but seriously, does the awarding of a coveted prize honouring your legacy sit well with you? Are you turning in your grave, as is compulsory when a dead person’s name is tarnished when it is used inappropriately?

Anyway, in case you don’t know who this clown comedian being honoured in your name is, and you haven’t been keeping up with the news… because, you know, you’re enjoying the eternal sleep and all that, allow me to fill you in or bring you up to speed.

A long time ago, I thought Bill was an OK guy. He used to be genuinely funny. He also used to be politically suave and said some important things, one of which may have contributed to the 2002 cancellation of his original television show, Politically Incorrect.

We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly…

Maher may have been agreeing with right-wing bigot and conspiracy theorist Dinesh D’Souza at the time about the 9/11 terrorists not being cowardly, but it was an important expression of free speech slamming U.S. imperialism.

I remember enjoying watching repeats of Real Time with Bill Maher on YouTube several years ago. There was also Religulous, the film he produced mocking religion, which tickled my fancy because I identified as an atheist at the time. He genuinely convinced me that he was a concerned moderate liberal. He even believes he’s progressive.

But things changed, Mark!

In 2014, to supplement his misogyny, he began exhibiting what, since October 7th 2023, has become full-blown Islamophobia. Bill tweeted the following:

Dealing w/ Hamas is like dealing w/ a crazy woman who’s trying to kill u – u can only hold her wrists so long before you have to slap her.

Also in October of 2014, actor Ben Affleck had a confrontation with Bill on his show over his Islamophobia. Bill’s other guest on the show was Sam Harris, another infamous Islamophobe. Chris Hayes of cable news network MS Now (formerly MSNBC) broke down the confrontation quite effectively on his own show:

When prodded by Afleck, Maher actually had the audacity to quip that Islamophobia “… is not a real thing when we do it.” I’m not sure, Mark, if he meant people like him or the West in general. Either way, Mark, the bigotry is staggering.

Interestingly, Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, original members of the New Atheist Movement known as the Four Horsemen, both became rabid Islamophobes after the movement faded. But this curious development is reserved for another separate conversation.

Let’s continue, Mark, with our protagonist, Bill Maher, the self-identified liberal.

Suddenly, Bill was in his 70s and becoming increasingly desperate to stay relevant. He now frequently agrees with right-wing talking points, including becoming a warhawk. He has, of late, doubled down on his support for Israel and their biblical 3000-year-old claim to the land from the river to the sea… and beyond, apparently, if you listen to the insane ramblings of some of the members of their right-wing government.

You see, Mark, Maher has completely forgotten his lines from the closing scene of Religulous, the infamous film he produced in 2008. Standing on the ruins of Megiddo, an ancient mound city in northern Israel that is associated with the biblical Armageddon prophecy, he launched into a lengthy admonition of religion that has equal relevance to any other ideology:

The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt.

Doubt is humble and that’s what man needs to be considering that human history is just a litany of getting shit dead wrong.

What he went on to say has a profound connection with current events in the Middle East, especially the genocide in Gaza:

Let’s remember what the real problem was. That we learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it.

That’s it! Grow up or die!

You see, Mark, he hasn’t grown up, but Bill didn’t die either. He continues to make arrogant, self-assured statements on his shows, which fly in the face of his own advice. And like warmongering recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, which must surely trouble Alfred, he is being rewarded.

I sincerely wish I could have your thoughts on this, Mark. I also wish you were still around to decide who deserves the honour before you hand out the award yourself. But for now, I’ll leave you to rest in peace while I grapple with this injustice.

La palabra «meme» no nació en internet. Su origen se remonta a 1976, cuando el biólogo evolutivo británico Richard Dawkins la utilizó por primera vez en su libro El gen egoísta (The Selfish Gene).

Dawkins creó el término meme para describir una unidad de transmisión cultural, es decir, una idea, comportamiento, costumbre o conocimiento que se propaga entre las personas de manera similar a como los genes transmiten información biológica.

¿De dónde proviene la palabra?

Dawkins tomó como base la palabra griega μίμημα (mímēma), que significa «algo imitado». También buscó que el término sonara parecido a la palabra inglesa gene («gen»), para reforzar la analogía entre la evolución biológica y la evolución cultural.

En el libro explica que los memes pueden reproducirse, modificarse y sobrevivir en función de su capacidad para ser imitados por otras personas.

¿Qué era un meme antes de internet?

En su sentido original, un meme podía ser:

• Una canción popular.
• Un refrán.
• Una creencia religiosa.
• Una moda.
• Una tradición.
• Un método de enseñanza.
• Una costumbre social.

Es decir, cualquier idea capaz de difundirse de persona a persona.

¿Cómo cambió su significado?

Con la llegada de internet durante la década de 1990 y, sobre todo, con el auge de las redes sociales en los años 2000, la palabra adquirió un nuevo significado.

Hoy, un meme suele entenderse como una imagen, video, animación, audio o texto humorístico que circula rápidamente por internet y que los usuarios modifican, adaptan y comparten para expresar opiniones, burlas o comentarios sobre acontecimientos políticos, deportivos, culturales o de entretenimiento.

Aunque este uso es distinto al planteado por Dawkins, conserva la idea central: la rápida difusión de información mediante la imitación y la adaptación.

¿Por qué los memes se vuelven virales?

Especialistas en comunicación digital consideran que un meme se propaga con rapidez cuando reúne características como:

• Humor.
• Sencillez.
• Fácil identificación con una situación.
• Capacidad de adaptación.
• Relevancia respecto a un acontecimiento de actualidad.
• Facilidad para ser compartido.

Cada vez que una persona modifica un meme o crea una nueva versión, ocurre un proceso similar a la «mutación» descrita por Dawkins para los memes culturales.

Los memes en la cultura digital

Actualmente, los memes forman parte del lenguaje cotidiano en plataformas como Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X y aplicaciones de mensajería como WhatsApp.

Además de entretener, también se utilizan para comunicar mensajes políticos, campañas publicitarias, críticas sociales, divulgación científica y estrategias de comunicación institucional.

Casi cinco décadas después de que Richard Dawkins acuñara el término, la palabra «meme» evolucionó desde un concepto científico sobre la transmisión cultural hasta convertirse en uno de los elementos más representativos de la comunicación en internet. AI: Not Conscious, but UNPREDICTABLE makes for a dangerous cocktail!

AI is obviously NOT conscious. To be con-scious one needs something ELSE to go with the science... At least etymologically speaking. But the science of AI fully explains AI, there is no need for anything else to go with the knowledge. Present AI, Large Language Models, LLM, all about finding gradients in extremely high dimensional spaces

Another type of AI is possible: WMs: World Models, where the AI basically learns physics. WMs will be superior to LLMs for most applications beyond Internet searches.

Consciousness requires the feeling of existing: present day AI do not have this capability, all the more because we do not know what it consists of.

The smallest known structures in the brain are Dendritic Nano Tubes, DNTs, and they are of the order of 100 nanometers across… 1000 atoms wide (molecules causing Alzheimer squeeze through them). At a scale ten times smaller, Quantum effects will appear. It is likely that they will play a crucial role in consciousness. Why? Because at this sort of scale, Quantum effects are going to appear, first of all (there are libraries of geometries and the Casimir Effect they bring… At the ten nano scale, so not only will there be Quantum effects, but Quantum Field Theory effects, and the dynamics of vacuum… Turns out the soul’s material is vacuum energy… Something like that is looming… It’s curious that QFT is not vibrating more in the collective consciousness… Obviously a problem with the High Energy physicists’ lack of elocution or imagination…)

Present day AI rests on electronics which work like canal systems (canals carrying electrons, not water molecules)… Quantum effects caused by said electrons are deliberately obliterated so that “semiconductors” can behave like classical canal systems.

The Quantum Computer, QC, is the exact opposite: far from avoiding Quantum effects, they are maximally exploited to compute with. The QC rests on entanglement, nonlocality and a new property called “magic” (basically what classical entanglement can’t duplicate)..

If Twenty-first Century technology can do it, it would be naive to believe that evolution did not get there first, especially since Quantum effects have been shown to play a direct role in neurology already (for example in birds seeing the Earth magnetic field).

Thus, if we want consciousness, we need the QC.

QC will enable us to create AC, Artificial Consciousness.

A different question is whether present AI can SIMULATE consciousness. The answer is obviously yes. Confusing this simulation with a creature with (Quantum) consciousness is the AI DELUSION. Dawkins who wrote a book called the God Delusion is himself suffering from an arguably worse condition, the AI Delusion. It’s worse because AI as we have it, is just classical canal engineering and smart high dimension calculus… There is no mystery whatsoever. .

Even though the AI we have now are not conscious, and can’t be conscious, they are still unpredictable. I actually have a mathematical PROOF of this (using mathematics and logics from the 1870-1940 period…).

That makes uncontrolled AI a potential master of humanity.
