I've tried #zoneminder and hated it because it's impossible to understand the settings so you get alerted about real stuff and not sun dapples.

I've tried #frigate and I hated it because it uses a lot of compute (i.e. power, fan noise, etc) to do an amazing job 80% of the time and completely miss things the rest of the time. Also, it took me weeks to get it working then it stopped after a year and I can't be arsed to figure out why.

What other **SELF HOSTED** #security #surveillance #opensource #software is out there?

I have lots of IP #camera that are pretty flexible.

Anybody out there figure out how to get a raspberry pi camera to stream into #Zoneminder on a newer version of the #RaspberryPI OS? I built a system on Buster that still runs, but it has been so long that the apps have changed, and now that I'm trying to add new cameras, I can't use the same scripts or apps. I raspicam is no longer. Rpicam-vid is workable I think, but the old system piped it into cvlc to stream, and that doesn't seem to work the same anymore. Driving me crazy. I don't want to revert to Buster, and I'm not sure it would work even if I wanted it to.

My ultimate solution would be for the cam to pipe into a system making an rtsp stream server so that I can pull it into Zoneminder. I am reasonably open to other options, but I know that setup has worked well in the past and is rock solidly stable for me.

I will add that this plays well with the very affordable Tapo c110 cameras 😊

But be aware #zoneminder can devour disk space. On limited storage, set an Expire filter!

On the other hand, the collected jpegs can make for fun videos 🤗

С момента выхода первой статьи «Бытовая автоматика. Начало» прошло уже почти 13 лет, и, оглядываясь назад, мне кажется — есть о чём рассказать. Проект, который родился как DIY-«включалка», постепенно вырос в нечто большее. Некоторые идеи остались прежними, другие — наоборот, претерпели множественные трансформации. Первоначальный сервер на кухонной полке прошёл эволюционный путь через три сервера на шкафу, затем стал всего лишь одной из виртуальных машин в VirtualBox на Dell R710. Сегодня от него, кроме бэкапов, ничего не осталось, но есть Proxmox на Dell Wyse 5070 с десятком контейнеров, в которые он эволюционировал для решения поставленных задач. Но давайте обо всём по порядку.

I don't even have it fully configured and working right, but I already

#frigate as a #security #camera setup.

Motion detection + object tracking works multiple levels above where it was with #zoneminder. It IDs every car going down the street and often in the parking lot a block away, plus the half-a-car poking over the hill from my neighbor.

It has reinvigorated me to set up some additional camerae in key spots of the yard plus maybe a birdfeeder one?

A while ago I adjusted my #Zoneminder setup to use ffmpeg as source type.

However since that change I noticed that all recorded events now started with a grey "layer" before the actual video.

To fix this, the #ffmpeg encoder parameters need to be set in the monitor (camera) settings. Here's how 👇

Any #FLOSS #Linux security #camera / #DVR recommendations? I've been using #Zoneminder for years, but I tire of its constant high CPU usage, ancient motion detection algorithms, etc. So far, #Frigate, #iSpy, and #Shinobi look interesting. The #HomeAssistant integration in them is a plus, and #Frigate has ML offload to a TPU (available as a USB dongle) for dramatic reduction in CPU and power usage (and more sophisticated detection; differentiating cars from people, etc.) #AskFedi

When I wanted to update the #ZoneMinder package on my Debian machine, I ran into an apt error (public key is not available). This happens because the public #GPG key (used for package signing) was renewed. The new key needs to be added to the list of apt's trusted gpg keys.

Finally now getting around to #objectdetection in #zoneminder

I'm actually considering keeping my #Synology #NAS running ónly for Surveillance Station.

All my actual NAS tasks have moved to #Unraid (because DSM is a PoS that's getting worse with each upgrade) but I just can't find a good alternative for SS.

Been running #Shinobi for a while now, and it's okay-ish (I also tried plenty of others: #iSpy, #Zoneminder, #Frigate, #Kerberos, and probably others too).

Only too bad that SS doesn't support alternative RTSP URL's for ONVIF cameras, so no go2rtc 😢

In particular, does anyone know how well #ZoneMinder works? I've been wanting to set up a security system of sorts for a while (mostly to check on the cats, tbh)

I still hate #zoneminder, and as a bonus it refuses to stream to #homeassistant. Any other suggestions out there?

Today is another #esp32 #microcontroller adventure. I just don't like the existing apps, and #esphome still can't stream (it only provides the <=1fps idle snapshot rate.)

I should also clean up and submit my added camera prefs to the #RTSP repo soon.

Is this what it feels like to be excited about a project? Been a while.

Any #recommendations from the collective for #camera management that isn't #zoneminder?

Bonus attachment: a #cardinal at a #birdfeeder, as seen from an #esp32cam painters-taped to a window. Lots of camera and focus adjustments to do still.
TW: it's about 5 degrees off from level. I have no intention of fixing it. Eventually I need to design a more permanent, adjustable suction cup mount.
