  6. I’m not a coder, but I do occasionally have to manipulate code, and I’d certainly much rather do it with this than with VSCode.

  8. I know no one really cares about this (2 similar tickets closed due to lack of interest), but I think it's a shame that #ZedEditor has made it to v1 (congrats btw) and dark themes are still a bit broken on MacOS: github.com/zed-industries/zed/

  9. My friend nailed it:

« #JetBrains IDE is software that tries to fight with your computer rather than helping you through it»

    Sadly...

« #ZedEditor is editor, not an IDE, with prototype features, but sells itself as production-ready, which is veeeery far from it.»

I'm alone in the Zed boat?

  10. #JetBrains implementation for Agents is shit.

Just had to diagnose why a client GPUs were running full 24/7. JetBrains IDE decided it to just randomly send prompts.

This kind of random behavior is why I'm no longer recommending JetBrains IDE unless your corpo pays it for you.

I'm on the #Zed bandwagon form now on. Period.

  13. Just a quick hack I noticed when spinning up with compose files outside VS Code fails (e.g., in or AntiGravity).
Often, a simple docker compose up -d helps to spin up the services so the devcontainer only has to be attached.

  14. @hbons I once wrote a single line nested if - elif - else script for my custom zed coderunner.

And now, a month later, I'm using the editor for my project, and every time I look into the script, I'm like "WTF! why?".

You've to see it to understand the insanity.

  20. Thanks to a work-in-progress Homebrew cask by Andi Péter (codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram/i), I was just able to quickly install and play with the new Gram code editor (codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram#g) – a fork of Zed with all the bullshit (AI, telemetry, etc.) removed that looks like it could be great editor to recommend both for people just learning to code (as I was, recently, to recommend for people learning Kitten¹) as well as seasoned programmers who don’t want to work in terminal.

And, as a bonus, it actually has a Helix Editor mode so if that’s your daily driver (raises hand), you can just use it like Helix (i.e., Helix Editor in a graphical shell).

If you want to try Andi’s build (only works on Mac at the moment and remember, you have to trust Andi):

    brew tap petrosz007/gram-tap codeberg.org/Petrosz007/homebr
    brew install --cask gram

PS. You can follow the author of Gram, @krig, on the fediverse :)

  21. @zed are you seriously perpetuating the fiction that forced arbitration is better for individuals, and that "speculative aggregate litigation" is a real threat?

    github.com/zed-industries/zed/

Your terms of service already have the standard disclaimer of warranty, this is just brazen anti-consumer policy. I was hoping your IDE would be one of few pieces of software that I actually like, rather than merely tolerate while I pray for a better alternative to come around. I still hold out some hope for that, so please remove your class action waiver and arbitration clause from your terms of service.

  23. Hi all. I’m Adam (adenoz), and this is my first time on the Fediverse.

I’m an Australian data professional, and I’m typically always working on at least one side project at any one time. I won’t be writing about my $work, but I will happily write about my various side projects and interests.

I really enjoy working with #duckdb and #ggplot2 as well as finding ways to use #rustlang and tools written in rust. I have a blog built with #zola where I’ll keep writing longer form things.

I like keeping up with global events and geopolitical related matters. I especially like combining those themes with data. Simple examples of interesting things include GDELT, news text like in Factiva, and Google Trends data.

At the moment, I’m writing a native mac app that will be a query and analytics studio. That’s all I have for now on that, though more will come in due course.

I like #linux, using #nushell and #HelixEditor, as well as the great software on #macos. My current favourite IDE is #zededitor. Sometimes (often?), I’m torn between Linux and Mac for very different reasons.

I’m now rambling, so I’ll stop there for now.

  24. If you're building iOS and Mac apps in Zed with xcede, builds have always been slower than in Xcode. Well, no more! There's a new option to make your builds just as fast.

This makes me unreasonably happy. It's just nicer.

Also, there's better support for Mac apps now.

  26. @Taffer I would really recommend to try instead. I will stay in for sure, but I tried Zed for Go debugging, works very quick and have pretty good defaults

  27. Ok, I'm probably late to the party, but it went completely over my head it seems.
    #JetBrains #fleet is no longer maintained: blog.jetbrains.com/fleet/2025/

I've been using it as I'm more familiar with the JetBrains SW products, but I guess it is time to switch.

    Maybe #zededitor from @zed ?

  28. @ctietze I've had the same experience. In the large project I work on, #Xcode rename fails more often than not, while LSP rename (in #ZedEditor) works and is very fast.

  29. I really love for most of my work. I use it for programming and to update markdown work journals. Remote folders are great. However, I ran into an annoying default setting today. Default keymaps for the project pane allow you to delete a file with just a `shift-D`. There is a `"skip_prompt":false"` argument set so it should prompt before deleting. Either it didn't or I accidentally dismissed it. Lost 6 hours of work. Deleted those keymaps.

  34. Semi late-night blog post: amxmln.com/blog/2025/so-i-kind

In which I realise that somehow I did end up switching to #ZedEditor full time sometime during the last few months. Enjoy!

  35. Use #Zed to build, run and debug iOS and Mac apps. Yes, debug – on devices and the simulator.

I've published the tools I've been using, along with a setup guide to walk you through. It's nice to spend less time in #Xcode.

#ZedEditor can drag #VSCode #LiveShare through the mud, if everything is #CRDT-first and it really works fast. (Had terrible desynchronization on VSC part.) To seriously consider it in enterprise, though, first major release needs to happen with collab tools already available as a #SelfHosted solution (not just their cloud that you can't be sure to be 100% secure and available 24/7). You can set custom `server_url` in settings (as user) and deploy `collab` crate (as devops), but authentication is another step that you have to band-aid, at the moment.

Overall, I don't expect much besides advertised features during the beta, which include fast autocompletion and language-agnostic tree, so it's a winner.
