  1. #Bildeston is not *that* near #Ipswich - its a good half hour drive from the town, an hours bike ride if you are fit/brave enough (maybe 45 minutes on an e-bike?) and has little public transport.

It only has a population of around 1100.

If 110 families are being helped by the #foodbank, assuming the average UK family size of 2,36 - thats 260 people so *24%* of the village population are having to make use of it.

This is a significant level of #RuralPoverty, approaching that of the same village in the late 1600s, when 33% of the population were in the village #workhouse

  10. Did you know that the first #European #workhouse had a nasty surprise for the work-shy?

The 'Rasphuis' was opened in 1596 in #Amsterdam. It was designed to reform delinquent youth & beggars.

If an inmate proved to be reluctant to work, they would be sent to the cellar, which would be flooded.

They were handed a hand pump, to get rid of the water - or drown.

(The existence of the cellar is disputed.)

  11. This is a #workhouse in #London from the 19th century. Note the overtly Christian slogans on the walls (but no other art/decor whatsoever), and consider that cameras back then were big, bulky things so the photo would have been taken with the full blessing of those running the place. It wouldn't surprise me if this is what some areas of USA would have planned for their homeless folk (TBH they'd try the same in Europe if it wasn't for the human rights laws)

  22. In 1317, Edward II granted the friary of St Augustine a license to purchase land in Skirbeck in Lincolnshire and by 1328 there were twenty friars living there. By the time of the dissolution, the total area was calculated as covering about ten acres - half an acre of this was adjacent to St John’s churchyard.

Three centuries later, when the Poor Laws were enacted it became the responsibility of the local parish to provide for the poor and they were housed in workhouses. Boston was built on land that belonged to the friary. All that remains now is its frontage.

The building was designed by architect George Gilbert Scott (image two) and what remains today is used by Lincolnshire Social Services.

  24. This evening, to attempt to keep up momentum of working on the dissertion over the holidays I'm back to trying to locate baptism, marriage and burial information for my pack of Irish paupers.

If you hear screaming it's just me getting frustrated with negative searches

    > According to "[t]he Criminal Code of 1903 (…) [w]omen who performed self-abortions were subject to detention in a #workhouse for up to three years; the same for anybody who assisted the abortion."

From 1936-1955 "abortions were banned – except for those necessary for medical reasons. Why? [O]ne of the 'old #Bolsheviks,' expressed the official position in an article in #Trud (Labor) newspaper: " (cont)
