  1. So watching #WDYTYA - Katrina Johnson-Thompson (who is an amazing person and athlete). Her ancestors moved to Miami - from the Bahamas. And where subjected to appalling racist apartheid. Subject to the wrong end of the Jim Crow Laws. Seeing the KKK marching through the streets.

This was all a long time ago - well, 70-80 years. Not ancient history. and it all sounds very contemporary.

I want to say FUCK THE US. But I know it is not everyone in the US. It is not even all the white people in the US. So I will just say FUCK THE WHITE RACISTS.

And the program shows that this separation, based on skin colour, is still present.

  3. Watching Toby Jones in Who Do You Think You Are, and struggling somewhat with the framing of his ancestor’s participation in events in India in 1857. It feels like an extremely colonial mindset. #WDYTYA #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #India

  5. Always interesting watching #WDYTYA and seeing how many people find in their background something ugly. Either they have an involvement in the slave trade, or (like |Toby Jones) an ancestor who was part of the Indian invading army (or some other colonial oppression).

And if not, they were in the workhouse.

Because that is our heritage. That is what some people want to take us back to.

    No thanks.

  7. So #WDYTYA - with Ruth Madeley - absolute amazing story.

I loved her already, she is always amazing, but this makes her seem utterly extraordinary.

  9. Watching #WDYTYA - new series back, with Zoe Ball. And, of course, a tragic story in the background.

And it reminds me that the people who want to return to some mythical glorious past - they expect to be the mill owners. Whereas most of them would be the workers. Who so often die young. Who have large families many of whom who die young.

Most people in the industrial revolution cities - like Glasgow, Manchester, and many others - had very short lives, full of pain and tragedy.

It sucked. Why would we want to go back to that?

  11. Watching Fred Sirieix’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are. And there was briefly a photo with a gigantic bottle of cider in it. Which reminded me of my Dublin gg-aunt’s wedding photo. Look at the two blokes in the back. Not cider! #genealogy #familyHistory #Dublin #WDYTYA #Guinness #TV #Ireland #photography

  13. Watching Paddy McGuinness’s Who Do You Think You Are, and getting very annoyed by how much they’ve totally ignored another Irish ancestral line! That popped up earlier in the research, but has been totally skipped. #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #Ireland #WDYTYA #TV #PaddyMcGuinness

  15. Did anyone see Who Do You Thin You Are last night, with Paddy McGuinness?

Fascinating how he knew almost nothing about his grandparents -- not even names.

But, can he talk... He never seemed to stop. :qq_043:

  17. Who forgot to tell me 'Who Do You Think You Are' is back for a new series in the UK?

I rely on you guys! 😉

I don't really watch TV so never saw any promos for its return.

  21. Watching Lesley Manville’s Who Do You Think You Are, and spotting many echoes of my husband’s ancestry, including long term non married couples (in his case his Cornish great great grandparents married late in life, after a first spouse died) and ancestors transported to #Australia (a g..uncle in his #Suffolk ancestry). #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #WDYTYA #LesleyManville #Cornwall #Transportation

  31. CW: slavery, who do you think you are

Catching up with this week’s Who Do You Think You Are and there’s a powerful section about an ancestor heavily involved in the slave trade in the Dutch West Indies. Also a nuanced discussion about the multitude of emotions this leads to and the importance of acknowledging it. It’s the same number of generations back that I have a slave owning ancestor, a #Melrose man in #Jamaica, my 6xg-uncle. #BlackHistory #Slavery #DutchHistory #WDYTYA #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

  35. problem solved

I watched "Who Do You Think You Are" yesterday with
Andrew Lloyd Webber who, like me, has Magito ancestors.

Johannes, Rotterdam city music master; the father of Henry and cellist Alexis Magito was 2x uncle of the tightrope walker Pieter Magito, who is my 6X greatgrandfather. Pieter played the violin.

Unfortunately online I can't find the episode, which I of course loved, outside the UK.
    Anyone have an idea?

  37. Just watched the @[email protected] #WDYTYA again where he traces the story of his 9 x great grandfather David Antonio Mendoza to Jaen, Andalusia who was a master swordsman and tortured & tried as part of the Spanish Inquisition. Wonderful story

  39. Just completed another soldier study for "Who do you think you are?". I doubt this one will make it to the screen, unless being sent home and discharged due to haemorrhoids forms a central part of the story. #ww1 #geneaology #wdytya
