During the congressional debate over the #law last year, #Republicans pushed #WorkRequirements for #Medicaid as a way to get "able-bodied" adults benefiting from government assistance into the workforce. #House Speaker #MikeJohnson said it would help preserve Medicaid "for people who rightly deserve it," not young men "sitting on their couches playing video games." 5. The Center on Budget & Policy Priorities also highlighted that there is not enough time to implement what could be considered less cruel systems for #Medicaid #WorkRequirements. The center called for work requirements to be pulled, “but short of that, states need more time to ensure their policies, systems, & staffing plans are in place to minimize the number of eligible people whose #healthcare is taken away.”

  10. #Medicaid #WorkRequirements do not increase employment. Instead, the administrative burden of work requirements only serves to kick people off this governmental #HealthInsurance. Additionally, a majority of people on Medicaid, who are not on Supplemental Security Income, work full or part-time jobs. This underlines how rhetoric around work requirements is just false.

  15. #Trump’s New #Medicaid #WorkRequirements Are Here

    It’s just cruelty.

On Friday, #Nebraska became the first state to enact Medicaid work requirements, mandatory for states with Medicaid expansion due to Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Notably, the state did it 7 months before the deadline.

Now, ~70k adults below the age of 65 in Nebraska who have Medicaid through its expansion could risk having their #HealthInsurance ripped away from them.

  16. “It’s just this dissonant, unhelpful interaction that you have with the government. I lost my job, I need food benefits. Well, you can only get food benefits if you have a job.”

Ummm…yeah. The objective is to make it impossible to get needed benefits. Thanks MAGA.

  17. Florida Lawmakers Aim to Add Work Requirements Without Expanding Medicaid

Critics say the proposal would likely force some people to become uninsured, even if they meet the work requirement.

  18. This kind of #policy making — the #ACIP childhood #vaccine schedule, combined with not extending #ACA subsidies, adding #WorkRequirements to #SNAP / #FoodStamps & #Medicaid — all coming simultaneously in 2026 — is going to be an assault upon the #poor people of the #UnitedStates all while we are in a #Kshaped #economy with the #WealthGap ever widening.

  19. Rollins made a case for sweeping changes to #SNAP by asserting the #USDA uncovered "massive fraud" in state data the agency demanded, & referred to stats suggesting wrongdoing without providing data or details.

The #Trump admin's latest campaign for SNAP changes comes as millions are already poised to lose #benefits as #states implement new #WorkRequirements & #eligibility rules that #Republicans in #Congress passed over the summer that are the deepest #cuts in history to the program.

  20. Attorneys General Sue Trump for Using Shutdown to Disrupt Food Aid for Millions

The Trump administration is facing a flurry of legal challenges to policies that could leave 42 million low-income people without food assistance as soon as November 1 while fast-tracking funding cuts and work requirements targeting veterans, unhoused people, and other vulnerable groups that rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as SNAP or food stamps).

  21. State experiments with #WorkRequirements have been plagued with administrative issues, such as eligible enrollees' losing #coverage over paperwork problems, & budget overruns. Georgia's work requirement, which officially launched in July 2023, has cost >$90 million, with only $26 million of that spent on #health benefits, according to the Georgia Budget & Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research organization.

  22. As voluminous research literature shows, #WorkRequirements achieve savings by implementing burdensome paperwork obligations that mostly take #Medicaid from eligible beneficiaries, not 25-yr-old guys who prefer playing video games to getting a job.

  23. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that, by imposing #Medicaid #WorkRequirements, the bill would eventually increase the #uninsured population by at least 8.6M. At first, #Republicans tried to defend this outcome on the grounds that it would affect only lazy people who refuse to work. This is clearly untrue, however.

  24. #Republicans on the party's right flank had pushed for deeper #spending #cuts to lessen the #budget impact, but met resistance from centrists who worried that would fall too heavily on the 71 million #LowIncome Americans enrolled in #Medicaid.

#MikeJohnson made changes to address conservatives' concerns, pulling forward new #WorkRequirements for Medicaid recipients to take effect at the end of 2026, 2yrs earlier than before. That would kick SEVERAL MILLION people off the program.

  26. "Under the TANF block grant, the federal government requires states to (1) meet the annual work participation rates determined by the federal government and (2) ensure that every recipient is working (as defined by the state) as soon as the state determines he or she is able or after 24 months of benefit receipt, whichever is earlier. States that do not meet the federal requirements may be sanctioned financially"

The federal law passed in 1996 ended welfare as an entitlement program

As covered in the #Marketplace reporting I linked, companies that make money off #WorkRequirements lobby the US #Congress for more.

It's both: states decide what to do with the money, but only within the rules set by federal law--so contact *all* your reps

  28. I agree with #SharonParrott, president of #CBPP:

"The agreement puts hundreds of thousands of older adults aged 50-54 at risk of losing food assistance, including a large number of women

"A large share of low-income adults in this age range are in poor health

“While the new exemptions are positive, improvements for some don’t justify expanding to others a failed policy that will increase and deepen poverty”

  29. If the #CBO is right, #Biden may have tricked #McCarthy a little

"An estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released late Tuesday said that while the new work requirements in #SNAP would save money, the added benefits pushed by Democrats would cost more—and add almost 80,000 people to the rolls in an average month

"Under the bill, veterans, homeless people and young people aging out of foster care would be exempted"

  30. Maximus, Inc
    Annual revenue over $4B
    Annual profit over $200M

#Maximus is the biggest of a list of companies that profit off #government aid for the poor: America Works, Equus (ResCare)

These companies are Brett Favre on more steroids: taking money that’s supposed to go to the #poor, and directing it to the rich.

  31. #News is that Pres #JoeBiden is considering Speaker #KevinMcCarthy's demands to decrease funding, add #WorkRequirements, & raise the age of "abled body adults" from 18-50 to 18-56 on #SocialServices like #FoodStamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program / #SNAP).

I need my friends & followers to write the President. We need to tell him to keep hands OFF on #SocialWelfare programs, like SNAP, #TANF, #WIC, #AffordableHousing assistance, #HeadStart, & others.
