#FiberOptic cables reveal a serious problem at the heart of modern #farming
#Tilling helps farmers control weeds and boost #soil fertility. But that also degrades a field's ability to hold #water and #carbon
Using distributed acoustic sensing scientists analyzed how seismic waves disturbed cable as they rippled through harrowed fields compared to adjacent undisturbed plots. Showing that plowing obliterates “capillaries” that carry water like tiny interconnected reservoirs

Another photo update of the mugwort patch at my community garden, now several weeks after it was plowed. It's Exhibit A for why one should never, ever till mugwort. I've tried to explain this to the person in charge but she just doesn't care. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #tilling #plowing #mugwort #artemisia

Here's the horror show at my community garden that I described several days ago. The "tilled" section has been plowed and looks weed free and inviting. But in reality the lawn of common mugwort that was previously there has just been broken up into thousands of little clumps, soon to reestablish in areas of the garden that previously didn't have it. And then, just like in past years, gardeners will abandon their plots because the weeds are too thick and the vegetables can't compete. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #nodig #tilling #plowing #mugwort

A Window Manager (WM) is a crucial component of a graphical user interface (GUI) in operating systems, particularly in Unix-like systems such as Linux. It controls the placement and appearance of windows within a desktop environment, providing the user with the means to interact with different applications.

Oh my, I spent about an hour weeding our garden, uncovering the earth, determining what space I really have to work with, and checking to see if any of the brown old rose bushes in our yard have new growth on them (they do!). I am so grateful to have gotten my toes in the dirt. But my body is tired. I've always had bad allergies out here. It was immediate shower and a small sip of benadryl for me, and now I'm recuperating on the couch with water and nursing my poor slightly swollen eyelids. 😮💨
But! The garden is ready for seeds when the time comes, and I discovered that someone at some point in this rental's life intentionally planted things in the various garden plots. I found remnants of old potted soil and root systems, and a couple forgotten or misplaced flower tags. Rust discoveries made me really happy! It feels good, like I'm rejuvenating the vision of life someone had in the past. And weeding around the rose bushes brought me right back to childhood, when I'd do the same task with my mother around her beloved rose bush in the front garden.
All in all, it was worth the allergic reaction. But man I could do without the itching and sneezing, and eyelid swelling, and sleepiness from the antihistimine 😅 I'd spend much more time out there if I could.

Since the tilling projects on kde/plasma started, it's nice to see that bismuth is actually kinda nice nowadays. The Stair Layout is something I never expected to work so well for me. Borders being broken is an issue, but just change to the Oxygen borders and it works.
