5 unterhaltsame Folgen kippen zum Schluss in unglaubwürdiges Melodrama
Nach längerer Durststrecke hat mich mal wieder eine Miniserie angesprochen. “The Veil” in der ZDF-Mediathek. Verfügbarkeitsdauer unklar. Einige starke Elemente, mit einer kritischen Einschränkung.
Hier der lesenswerte Wikipedia-Eintrag. Elisabeth Moss als Headliner ist längst ein Weltstar. Die kann alles spielen. Die Neuentdeckung ist die Libanesin Yumna Marwan in der zweiten Hauptrolle. Von der gibt es noch gar keinen deutschen Wikipedia-Eintrag, aber einen englischen. Die beiden Damen liefern sich ein sehenswertes Duell vor den fotogenen Kulissen Istanbuls, Paris’ und Londons.
Der rote Faden ist die missgünstige Konkurrenz zwischen den Geheimdiensten der USA, Frankreichs und des UK. Sie gönnen sich gegenseitig nicht das Schwarze unter den Fingernägeln, sind aber gegen das Böse in der Welt zur Zusammenarbeit gezwungen. Die beiden Heldinnen versuchen mehr gegen als mit diesen Geheimdiensten, bzw. dem bösen islamistischen Terrorismus, ihre humane Autonomie zu verteidigen. Das gelingt nicht durchgehend, und ist insofern realistisch. Die Charaktere beider Hauptrollen sind wohltuend ambivalent angelegt, und lassen Fragen offen. Wie im richtigen Leben.
In der Letzten der 6 Folgen kippt die Story leider in ein Melodram um, mit dem die Vorgeschichte der von Moss verkörperten MI6-Agentin dem Publikum offengelegt werden soll. Das ist unglaubwürdig und verzichtbar. Die zünftige Schluss-Schiesserei in einem Barnaby-artigen Landschloss hätte dessen nicht bedurft. Die Auflösung ist drammaturgisch so arm, dass ein Star wie Mrs. Moss sie besser resolut abgelehnt hätte (Idee und Drehbuch: der hochdekorierte Steven Knight).
Muss ich erwähnen, dass die Serie vor Trump II gedreht wurde? Es wäre interessant zu sehen, wie sie in der aktuellen Gegenwart fortgesetzt werden müsste … Mann gönnt sich ja sonst nichts.
Abenteuer aus dem wahren Leben
Ähnlich abenteuerlich wie diese Agentenserie eine Dokumentation aus dem wahren Leben der Gegenwart im Norden der Türkei:
“Wilde Wege: Türkei – Von der Schwarzmeerküste der Türkei führt der ‘Highway D915’ durch steile Täler und hochalpine Pässe in das anatolische Hochland. Gegensätzlicher könnten die Gegenden, die der Highway verbindet kaum sein und auch deshalb ist diese gefährliche Straße durch das Pontische Gebirge noch heute eine respektierte und beliebte Verbindung für die Menschen im hohen Norden der Türkei.” Verfügbar bis 8.6.

The premise was a bit shaky from the start. The idea the West would send a secret agent to find out a person's identity rather than just arresting them and interrogating them, is a touch on the weak side. When did the West care about wrongful arrests?
Putting the obvious pro-West propaganda aside (these shows and movies are never allowed to be made unless they show the West in a good light) the idea of a road movie in which a secret agent and a member of a terrorist organisation flee together is quite good. A slightly implausible set up, but an enjoyable concept.
The idea is basically an extended version of those scenes in James Bond where the bad guy and Bond know who each other but pretend they don't, but continually say things that suggest they do.
This part of the show was really good. And the characters were great. In fact, Elisabeth Moss is a better James Bond than any of the James Bonds.
The show does take the time to criticise Western foreign policy, but overall it is only terrorist resistance to the West (from Isis) that is condemned for being bad. The Isis member points out that the West kills thousands of people in the middle east and uses that to justify the terrorist plot that is underway. But ...
