Just watched 'One Cut of the Dead', a Japanese zombie-comedy film I'd never heard of before, that popped up in my recommends and I decided to take a punt on.
Definitely the right choice - it is a thing of creative and cinematic joy. I wrote a few words about it - have a quick read below (there's no spoilers) then get on it.
PS Currently streaming for free on #SBSOnDemand for those in Oz (or who have a VPN and pretend to be).

The Kodi app for SBS On Demand by Aussie Addons has been broken since SBS removed version 3 of their API. Thankfully, the fabulous Matt Huisman has taken on the challenge and has already released a usable add-on for Kodi!
Matt already had apps for 10play, 7plus, 9now. So great that he's added SBS!
To install: add the SlyGuy repository per the instructions:
https://www.matthuisman.nz/2020/02/slyguy-kodi-repository.html
Then add the SBS add-on from the SlyGuy repository.
NB: any favourites you have for SBS shows using the old add-on won't work, you'll need note them down and search in the new app to get them again.
And don't forget to show your thanks via Kofi (link on Matt's website).

@mativity just found an announcement from the other day about SBS dropping their old API:

Watched the 1979 Malayalam movie Kummatty last night. SBS has the 2021 digital restoration version, so pretty clean (thanks Mr. Scorsese!)
NB: leaves SBS On Demand at end of March.
It's a very slow story, meandering along a simple plot, showcasing rural life in Malabar from that era. The children are delightful, the stranger is enigmatic and mischievous. Very much a cultural movie, with some fantastic masks.
Will not be for many, but is a nice easy watch if a little confusing at times, confounding with loose threads. Little dog actor is excellent.

This week we watched the BBC documentary Once Upon a Time in Space. It's excellent!
It's not a comprehensive look at the space programs. It's not technically detailed. It's very human. Mostly, it's real astronauts and cosmonauts, and some support staff and family, telling their stories and providing history and background.
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in humans stepping outside the planet we live on. And the political and geopolitical challenges faced along the way.

Marc Fennell is back with another of his trademark highly-engaging documentaries. This one is a doozy! I mean, they're all a bit of a roller coaster ride but this one is just wild!
Australia's Greatest Conman?
"Marc Fennell sets out to uncover the truth behind John Friedrich, the man who deceived a nation. He reveals a story that's stranger than fiction, delving into a web of lies and money."
I do vaguely remember the drama about the fraud being discovered, but the story is so much bigger than that. And the storytelling is once again exquisite.

SBS has a documentary called Fengyang: The Forgotten Imperial City, covering an archaeological dig on a 14th century palace site. Mostly in Mandarin with some French, subtitled.
It's a slow-paced exploration of the discovery and resurrection of one of the great palaces of the Ming era. Some quite amazing work, quite the story, and left me dumbfounded by the importance of superstition in the world of the first Ming emperor.

I see that SBS World Movies is showing the 2014 movie The Crow's Egg again, this afternoon as well as early tomorrow morning and again Thursday afternoon.

We recently watched the doco Emily: I Am Kam, from NITV. It's an amazing in-depth look at the life of one of Australia's greatest artists, Emily Kam Kngwarray.
Lovely to get such great coverage of her life, with her family and friends from over the years. Having seen the doco about the exhibition of her work in Japan, it was great to get more of her story.
Streaming now on SBS On Demand, however that's at 720p resolution and may be a little blurry on the beautiful artworks. We recorded off NITV ages ago, only just watched it last week. Would recommend watching out for it on NITV to get it in 1080p, as it'll no doubt come around again.

The other night we watched the 2022 movie Rogue Agent, based on true events (spice up a bit of course). Wow.
It's an absolute tour de force for actor James Norton, a real flex of his acting skills. How can such a sweet face hide so much malevolence? Quite easily, it seems. Gemma Arterton brilliant as the woman scorned.

We've been sporadically watching a doco, The Spice Trails: Latin America, and I reckon a few here might enjoy it. It expires 8 January so get ya skates on if you want to see it.
https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-series/the-spice-trails-latin-america
It's imperfect: fast, like a race through each territory; screen text and subtitles are inaccurate and sometimes at odds with spoken word; incomplete, leaving so many questions!
But it covers a lot of territory and has an interesting story to tell about each "spice". Visually gratifying, good foodie nerd catnip.
And now I want some nea pia / aji negro!

Last night we finished watching Little Fires Everywhere, on SBS On Demand. Crikey.
From the first episode, it appears to be a cliché USA race and class drama, which to some degree it is. But oh, it is so much more than that. The title at first seems to be all about the house fire (a fireman says the line), but again, it's so much more than that.
The main characters are strong and controlling and interfering, each in their own way, and from this stems the little fires. As secrets are revealed along the way, the simplistic clichéd view crumbles to reveal deeper problems.
A must watch to the end.

Streaming some telly via SBS On Demand and I have to say that alternating between episodes of Brassic and episodes of Californication can be mentally whiplash-inducing, in terms of cultural and idiom shift. 🤪
Maybe it's good for neuroplasticity though. 🤷♂️

Watched a doco on SBS about the Isle of Rùm in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Nice quiet away from it all place, largely a reserve now with walking tracks and hairy coos and sheep and deer.
You'd get more historical information about Rùm from its Wikipedia page, including possible sources for its name (it's complicated). The doco doesn't get into that very much. The focus is the lives and hopes of three permanent residents of the Island. A cosy little doco. Largely about how everyone needs Dave.
Dave is everywhere. So is Dave's dog, and often Dave's son. Dave does everything. Frankly, I doubt the Island would cope without Dave. The doco should have been called Needing Dave.
Something nice and calming to watch over a lunch or two.

Finished season one of Reindeer Mafia on Friday, and it looks like there just has to be a season two; looking forward to it!
This show almost slips into my definition of a comedy thriller, mostly from the antics of two particularly thick characters. But really, it's a classic thriller with hidden themes and unexpected relationships. And some shear fucking bad luck. And the odd reindeer.

With SBS doing a focus on the Coen Brothers movies, I finally got around to watching Hail, Caesar! tonight.
It's a great pisstake on 1950s Hollywood, both a tribute and a send up. A movie lover's giggle, peppered with big name actors and finely crafted with genre references and industry detail.

CW: Movie review, movie has triggers
I'm shook.
I just watched the Japanese movie Evil Does Not Exist by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi. Until the climactic finale, it was a fabulous slow burner with very interesting commentary and great characters. And now I'm flattened.
I think this was actually an awesome movie. I mean, I'm no fan of shakey cam, and did not enjoy the music, but everything else was brilliant. The ending makes you view the entirety of the movie through a different lense though, and likely requires a rewatch that I'm not inclined to give it any day soon.
I would say that if you like a complex movie that results in a mind fuck, this is a movie that fits the bill. It is very good art. It possibly is more meaningful for Japanese audiences, but I suspect not. I think the director likes to set you up for a sound slapping, which he certainly did here. Likely to have you (and me) wondering about the ending for some time.
If the above hasn't put you off, I recommend you watch this movie. It really is very good. But the ending is crushing. And don't imagine you can see it coming, it's not as obvious as you'd think.

Last night we watched the Danish movie Godland, set almost entirely in Iceland and with (sparse) dialogue in Danish and Icelandic. Over two hours of it.
It was beautiful. Dire. Scenic. Bleak. Amazing. Frustrating. Graphic (animal slaughter). Serene. Extremely weird in places.
Would I recommend it? Hard to say, I reckon many wouldn't have made it as far as the church building site before bailing.
Most of the movie has no dialogue, it documents the long drawn-out journey with truly astounding vistas. A good chunk of the dialogue is "I don't understand you" (said in Danish) as the priest doesn't speak Icelandic. There is an interpreter for some part of the journey, but, well, he departs at some point.
The movie is an artwork, made to look like it was filmed in Super 8 (i.e. 4x3 aspect). It needs to be treated as art rather than a story, for much of it at least. On that basis, it is truly worth the time spent watching it.

We finished watching season 2 of Rogue Heroes last night. Crikey, what a show. Yes, it's gone for a tonne of fiction (great variance from docos and a movie I've seen about the SAS) but it's highly entertaining.
If anything, season 2 was even stronger on the horrors of war than season 1 was. Every emotion is represented, some so viscerally that it hurts. And yet, very bloody funny.
An amazingly good cast, with Jack O'Connell really shining as the genius scoundrel Paddy Mayne. Season 2 lets a few others get the spotlight too, which… I was going to say "is nice", but not really so much for their characters. 🤷♂️
Highly recommended if you have the stomach for it. And it looks very much like it's set up for a third season.
