The Invisible Silk Safety Rope: Holding your entire body weight out horizontally like a diving board takes massive muscular effort. To save energy, the caterpillar spins a microscopic, nearly invisible strand of silk from its mouth and attaches it to the main branch. It then leans back and lets the silk thread act as a guy-wire to hold its body up, like a suspension bridge!

The Catapult Stance: To make the disguise work, it can't just lie flat against the branch. It uses its rear set of prolegs to anchor itself firmly to the stem, and then hooks its entire body outward at a rigid, straight angle. It can hold this completely motionless, rigid "stick" posture for hours at a time to fool hungry birds.

How It Pulls Off the Trick
The "Twig" Illusion: It isn't just brown and cylindrical; its body is covered in tiny, rough ridges and pale markings that perfectly match the bark, nodes, and lenticels of the actual hazel or birch branch it is holding onto. Even its head is shaped to look like a dead terminal bud at the end of a twig.

Masquerade: This is the precise sub-category for our caterpillar. It doesn't hide against a background, and it isn't trying to look scary. Instead, it is fully visible, but it has evolved to look like a specific, inanimate object (a twig) that a predator has zero interest in eating. To a passing bird, the caterpillar isn't invisible; it’s just completely uninteresting junk food.

This incredible little master of disguise is an inchworm, which is the caterpillar stage of a Geometrid moth (family Geometridae).
Specifically, this looks like one of the Twig Mimic Caterpillars (often found in genera like Biston or Synaxis). They have evolved one of the most flawless camouflage strategies in the entire animal kingdom.
It's not camouflage or mimicry, it's masquerade.
