In David Brin’s #ThePostman the people “running a #AI” are actually just conning the locals that they have got one, in order to get the locals to provide them with food and water …

Last night I watched #KevinCostner’s #ThePostman - again.

Every time I do I get so frustrated that Costner basically purchased the rights for the title & then made a #film where the plot is massively different from the #book, when the book’s story is far superior.

Such is #Hollywood I guess.

Last night I saw #ThePostman for the first time and I unapologetically love it.

It's got hope, a society being rebuilt, emotional turmoil, and logistics.

A genuine gem. I cried SO MUCH.

Has anyone seen the 1997 movie read The Postman (or read David Brin's 1985 novel it's based on)?

It strikes me that the discourse around the 2024 US election follows the same main beats. Agent Orange, obviously, is the militia-leading demagogue General Bethlehem. Biden is the confused drifter, who puts on an institutional costume for self-preservation and wanders into becoming a central figure in the healing of a fragmented civilisation.

For a while, it sure looked like Kevin Costner was specializing in playing loners trying to find their way. But, when he made "The Postman," he said that was just a coincidence.

May 10: Filmed in Washington

#ThePostman (1997)
A nameless drifter dons a postman's uniform and bag of mail as he begins a quest to inspire hope to the survivors living in post-apocalyptic America.
Filmed partly in Boundary Dam, Metaline Falls and Anacortes, Washington, USA.

@MirrorAyako you might re-watch/re-read #StationEleven . I think it does much of what you're looking for. They are monitoring for infected and quarantining 20 years later. These people only seem to survive because of drive, odd bits of inspiration, and luck. Like #ThePostman--there's a future but because most humans are irrational, like you say, it's a lot like a re-start. I agree most other dystopian fiction misses the mark. Surprised #TheLastofUs writers didn't take anything from our pandemic.

Rewatching #ThePostman and I still disagree with the critics. It was a good movie. Maybe great. Maybe not. But good.

The ending, set in 2043, talks about the fragility of #Democrocy and how easy it was to fall into #Tyranny.

It's more relevant now than then. Since we almost did fall tyranny.

It really isn't hard. You just have to ignore "#Politics" because you think it doesn't affect you.

Politics affects everything.

You either participate or get owned. Literally. Ask #ADOS. Or women.
