  1. Sad but grateful today. Told CFI that I'd be stopping flight training. Just under 100 hours total time, 33 hours solo, just needed school stage check + FAA checkride. I'm grateful that I fulfilled a childhood dream of FLYING, but this is enough. I'm going to miss the sky. #studentpilot #aviation

  2. Drove to a local airfield which has a well-regarded breakfast / lunch restaurant. The French toast was out of this world. Have done touch-and-goes there and used it for a XC checkpoint, but never “been” there. Someday I hope to spend $400 to fly there to get the same food. #studentpilot

  3. I need this. Need to figure out how to source specific #LEGO parts. This version www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC... includes a parts list, but not all numbers match at LEGO Pick A Brick. Another version also looks good: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC... #studentpilot

  5. Solo long cross-country finally done! Air was a bit rough below 3000 feet especially for this #studentpilot, but the sky was clear enough to see checkpoints from WAY far away. Just a beautiful but bumpy day. As always, I could have flown better, but it's done!

  6. Evolution of converting data into #studentpilot understanding: Short-field takeoff POH performance tables --> #dataviz plots of the tables --> interactive #rstats #Shiny App for "What if?" analysis Also fetches weather and runway info (Needs runway refactor for small fields with no weather)

  7. The weather still hates me. Green is visual flight rules (VFR); blue is marginal VFR. I'm in the Northeast. Fun to compare SkyVector (limited # of reporting sites) vs. full data download from Aviation Weather Center and personal R script (previously described). #datavis #studentpilot

  8. The reason I will never get my private pilot certificate is because of the exponentially decreasing probability of simultaneously fulfilling: - 3 airfields with #studentpilot solo weather minimums - my availability - plane availability p1•p2•p3•p4•p5 = essentially infinitesimal No long XC again.

  9. Any word on why prog charts at AWC have been inaccessible since yesterday? #avgeek #aviation #studentpilot

  10. Decreased Weather Forecast Office staffing and loss of 2 radiosonde reporting locations in CONUS (Omaha, NE and Rapid City, SD) for winds / temperatures aloft analysis. Guess I'll have to update my analysis (www.incidentalfindings.org/posts/2024-1...). #rstats #dataviz #studentpilot #weather

  11. Had to cancel student solo long XC for weather at one airport (the weather hates me) so went to practice area instead. But for the first time, my 360° steep turns ran into my own wake (3 out of 4 times)! (Landings were slightly less terrible, too.) Small victories for a #studentpilot.

  13. Good news — figured out how to import a Google Earth map layer outlining the practice area into ForeFlight. Bad news — very clear that my last flight wandered a bit out of bounds. Did not violate any airspace, but it’s really inconvenient that air doesn’t have markings. #studentpilot

  14. Just picked a fight in r/flying. Someone reporting errors in their fleet’s w+b sheet. Discussion struck me as pretty pointless. Did math. The max error was equivalent to 1 lb error for backseat. Hope passenger didn’t 💩 without telling because that’s the magnitude of error. #avgeek #studentpilot

  15. Flew for the first time in 2.5 weeks yesterday and solo for the first time since late December. I didn’t do very well at all. So disheartening. How do you watch and react (and not OVERreact) to everything at the same time? #studentpilot

  16. Have modeled EVERY major performance calculation for this C172S. Can fetch METAR to autopopulate elev, baro, and temp. Handles PAlt, DAlt, headwinds. Calculates climb from field elev to goal altitude. Need good weather for #studentpilot solo long XC. Just wish I flew better. #avgeek #rstats #shiny

  17. I made a #shiny app to do my C172S cruise performance calculations. I know apps out there already do this, but creating my own ensures I understand it fully. Thinking of adding takeoff and landing performance. Will make it easy to do the calcs every time. #studentpilot #rstats #datavis

  18. Visualized cruise performance tables with plots for better intuition of how the numbers relate. The line plot uses numbers directly from the POH tables. The heat map is visualization of a calculated metric of nautical miles per gallon. Just being a #studentpilot #avgeek with #rstats #datavis

  19. The remedy for get-there-itis is sound aeronautical decision making. What a role model for this #studentpilot. Hopefully I will remember this incident someday when making a questionable go / no go decision.

  20. First flight in 3 weeks as a #studentpilot. Winds were friendly; wasso great to be in the air again. Unusual attitude recovery is FUN. Also had first attempts at short field landings -- one each good / barely 20-feet short / floated long. Have to work on that energy management.

  21. It’s been surprisingly effective to have a “daily habit” app remind me to study for my PPL at least 15 minutes every day. Before, it just seemed so huge and amorphous (and FAR AIM regs just aren’t much fun) that I procrastinated about doing anything. Making progress! #studentpilot

  22. Just created a simple feed to find posts by and for student pilots -- should pick up all posts tagged with #studentpilot Have been hoping for a BlueSky community for beginner aviators and perhaps this will help! #aviation #avgeek (feed icon is from FlightAware of the C172 I first soloed in 😊)

  23. Another #studentpilot here (but old and creaky), also looking for GA feeds. Most aviation feeds I’ve come across are for aviation photography (which is really cool), but hoping to find other beginners. KOWD C172

  24. Bit the bullet to buy iPad mini. Last night's training flight had unplanned diversion. Didn't know radio freqs, runways, etc. What to do? - sectional chart in backseat/backpack in dark plane - struggling w/G1000 for info - iPhone in pocket with ForeFlight trial and all info. Success #studentpilot

  25. Learning to fly is both incredible and disheartening. How long until the best thing I can say about my landings progresses beyond "survivable" and "plane not broken"? And how on earth did people find airports at night without a G1000? (Activating runway lights was very cool though) #studentpilot

  27. It's been a while since I updated this. Things are still happening. I haven't flown in about 2 months, as the last time I went to fly (about 2 weeks ago) one of the tires went flat while I was pre-flighting the plane.

I finally got the evaluations scheduled that the FAA is requiring and uh, turns out it's going to cost 4 *thousand* dollars...

I'm still trying to process that one

  28. After 3 flying lessons this week and the final push whilst the UK weather held. I took my GST at lunchtime, and passed.

    I'm no longer a #StudentPilot but just #pilot.

Also had quite a lot of fun and interesting things to do at the Airfield. Replaced throttle cables, balanced carborettas and did a ground adjusted prop pitch change.
Our standby plane is now running nice and smooth, so much so I used it for my GST test.

  29. I worked on a small project last night condensing an hour of flight time into less than 20 min of video. Watch me fly to Detroit and back or just vibe to the music

  30. I got the update late last night on the engine failure, we lost 2 spark plugs on a single cylinder apparently. I'll look at the engine logbook entry next time I'm up at the airport to see if there's any more details.

This surprised me, considering each cylinder has 2 spark plugs run off separate magnetos for redundancy reasons.

  31. Fly me into the hedge please!

The end of the runway is in sight.

Sadly we are still at 400 feet and on a glidepath that will take us beyond the hedge at the far end of the runway.

“What are you thinking?” I enquire optimistically as my student wrestles internally with the decision making process that should really go something like this:

“Dan’s asked me what I’m thinking. That probably means that this approach is not very good. I should go around.”

“I think its ok.” is the optimistic reply I get.

With a sigh I command, “Ok, full power go-around.”

This type of exchange happens from time to time and its usually when the student has been ‘circuit bashing’, or practising repeated take offs and landings for some time without success. However, it’s also usually around this point that the student is right on the cusp of ‘getting it’.

Yep, definitely looking a little high here…

Getting it: that joyful moment when something that someone has been struggling with suddenly clicks. It happens all the time in life, from the moment you take your first steps (although granted, its likely you can’t remember those), to the time your dad ran along behind you pretending to hold the bike seat as you rode without your stabilisers the first time. Or what about the time you finally swam without your armbands?

Flying, and in particular landing, is no different. Once you understand what you are trying to achieve, and get it, you will never forget.

Spoiler alert, you will still make some shit landings!

But, you will at least be able to work out why it went wrong, and more importantly, what you can do differently next time to address it.

It’s one of the greatest joys of my job as a flight instructor to see someone ‘get it’ – in fact it’s probably more rewarding than seeing someone’s first solo, as I’m just generally just like a mother hen during that particular milestone, fussing and worrying (unnecessarily I might add). The ‘getting it’ moments are just as big in my eyes, as that is when people start to fly the plane, rather than being flown by the plane.

And that moment, when someone flies a stable glide approach, to the aiming point, rounds out at just the right height, holds the plane in the air until the speed has bled off, and does NOT attempt to fly it into the runway, erm, I mean land it, that moment is one of the most satisfying moments there is when teaching people to fly.

The secret to landing, paradoxically, is to try not to land. And as soon as my students not only realise that, but actually believe it, that’s when they begin to make real progress.

That’s when they can judge the angle of the approach more accurately, and at 400ft over the middle of the runway, we’d already be at full power on the go-around without me needing to utter a single syllable.

    That’s when they ‘get it’.

  32. Well as of last night I've completed all the required dual training hours required for a private pilot certificate. I can't begin the 10 hours of solo time requirement until I have a valid medical, and that's held up in the deferred state for the foreseeable future.

  35. My worst touch and go of the day, but it didn’t look that bad from the ground 🙈 #studentpilot

  36. At the beginning of 2022 I was not:
    - A #pilot (or even a #StudentPilot)
    - A #CISO
    - A #CatMom
    - An #EmptyNester
    - A published #Author

All that and so much more changed in 2022. I just went back and looked through my photos from this year and it's astonishing how many amazing memories I made with so many amazing people. I love you all and hope you have an incredible 2023!

  37. So apparently 3 videos is the threshold for creating a playlist on Youtube (for me anyway). If you're looking for my very limited #aviation, #studentpilot, #privatepilot video content, there's now an easy way to find all of it (again all three videos worth LOL).

  43. #HackerFlightSchool is happily back on track. Got my plane back today, both main struts have been rebuilt with new seals and scrapers.

CFI and I flew up to the airport where I'll be taking my checkride. Did some soft field and short field takeoffs and landings and then came back home. Just days away now and (knock on wood) the weather forecasts for the checkride are still looking good.
