The Airports I Remember: From Hong Kong Skies to a Hyderabad Lift

“Some airports welcome you with breathtaking views. Others welcome you with a broken lift. I’ve experienced both.” 😂✈️

Before any airport gets offended, this isn’t a professional ranking. I’m not an aviation expert, and I certainly don’t have a scorecard for terminal design, baggage handling or lounge quality.

These are simply my airport memories.

I’ve travelled through quite a few airports over the years, and when I started listing them, I realized just how many places have become part of my travel story.

Hong Kong, London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Dubai, Singapore, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia.

Some airports impressed me.

Some made me feel excited.

Some were simply part of getting from one place to another.

And one of them…

stuck me in a lift.

Naturally, that one is impossible to forget.

🇭🇰 Hong Kong: The arrival I love most

If I had to choose my favorite airport experience, Hong Kong International Airport would probably win.

And it’s not really because of the terminal.

It’s the landing.

I love looking out of the airplane window as we descend and seeing Hong Kong appear below.

The water.

The mountains.

And then that incredible skyline.

There is something magical about it. The city seems to reveal itself little by little as the plane comes down.

You haven’t even reached the terminal yet, but Hong Kong has already welcomed you.

That view is part of the journey for me.

Sometimes the best airport experience happens before you even leave the airplane.

🇬🇧 Heathrow: The gateway to London

Then there’s Heathrow.

It’s huge, busy and sometimes overwhelming, but there is something exciting about arriving there.

When London is your destination, Heathrow feels like the beginning of the adventure.

Of course, airports can test your patience. Queues, immigration, security, luggage and finding your gate can turn even the calmest traveller into someone wondering why they didn’t just stay home.

But that’s part of travelling.

And somehow, Heathrow remains memorable.

🇮🇪 Dublin: A different kind of welcome

Dublin Airport feels different from the giant international hubs.

It’s more approachable, and I like that.

Arriving in Dublin feels less like entering a massive transportation machine and more like beginning a journey through Ireland.

It doesn’t need to shout for attention.

It simply feels like an introduction to the country.

And sometimes that’s enough.

🇸🇬 Singapore: The airport that became part of the trip

Singapore is another airport experience that stands out.

Changi is one of those places where you actually notice the airport.

It’s modern, spacious and beautifully organized, with plenty happening around you.

Most airports make you want to get through them as quickly as possible.

Singapore somehow makes you want to arrive early.

That’s quite an achievement for an airport.

🇦🇪 Dubai: Everything is bigger

Dubai is another unforgettable airport.

It feels enormous, international and unmistakably Dubai.

Travellers from all over the world are arriving and departing, and the airport feels like one giant crossroads.

It can be overwhelming, but that’s also what makes it memorable.

Dubai doesn’t exactly whisper, Welcome.

It announces itself.

🇩🇪 Frankfurt: The serious business of travel

Frankfurt has a completely different feeling.

It has that major European hub atmosphere: busy, efficient and purposeful.

It feels like an airport where people are there to get somewhere.

Find the gate.

Catch the flight.

Move on.

There is something almost wonderfully serious about it.

🇲🇾 Kuala Lumpur and Penang: Two Malaysian memories

Malaysia gave me two more airport experiences: Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Kuala Lumpur has that international-hub feeling, with travellers constantly coming and going from different parts of the world.

Penang feels more connected to the destination itself.

And perhaps that’s what makes travelling through airports interesting. They don’t all have to be spectacular.

Sometimes the destination waiting beyond the terminal is what makes the arrival memorable.

🇮🇳 India: Mumbai, Delhi… and the infamous Hyderabad

I’ve travelled through several airports in India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad.

But Hyderabad has earned its own special chapter.

Because…

I got stuck in the lift. 😂

At some point, after the situation had become sufficiently frustrating, I remember sighing:

“This airport is not so friendly…”

Then somebody nearby smiled and said:

“Agreed!”

That moment has stayed with me.

Maybe Hyderabad International Airport is perfectly fine. Maybe I simply caught it on the wrong day.

But when an airport traps you in a lift and then a complete stranger immediately agrees with your assessment, it’s difficult not to remember it.

Hyderabad became my personal winner of the worst airport experience.

Not necessarily because the airport itself was terrible.

Because the lift betrayed me.

🇻🇳 Hanoi: The beginning of something new

Hanoi was another memorable arrival.

One of the things I love about travelling is that moment when you realize you’re somewhere completely different.

You hear another language.

You see unfamiliar signs.

Everything around you changes.

The airport becomes the first chapter of the trip.

And sometimes that first impression stays with you long after you’ve left.

🇵🇭 Manila, Cebu and Davao: Three different arrivals

I’ve also travelled through Manila, Cebu and Davao.

Each one has its own feeling.

Manila is busy and energetic, much like the city itself.

Cebu feels more like the beginning of a holiday. There’s something about arriving there that immediately puts you into vacation mode.

Davao feels different again.

That’s something I’ve come to appreciate about airports. Even within the same country, they can give you completely different first impressions.

🇹🇭 Thailand: Familiar but never quite the same

Thailand has given me plenty of airport memories too.

After travelling there several times, some of its airports have become familiar parts of my journeys.

And yet, every arrival can still feel different depending on where I’m going and what kind of trip I’m about to have.

Sometimes the airport is simply the gateway.

Sometimes it’s the first hint of the adventure waiting outside.

🇮🇩 Indonesia: The feeling of being somewhere new

Indonesia also belongs on my list.

Arriving in Indonesia has its own atmosphere. You know you’re entering somewhere with a different landscape, culture and rhythm.

And that’s one of the things I love about airports.

They are transition points.

One moment you’re in one country.

A few hours later, you’re somewhere completely different.

🇱🇦 Vientiane: Simple and memorable

Then there’s Vientiane.

After experiencing enormous airports like Dubai, Singapore, Heathrow and Frankfurt, arriving at a smaller airport can feel almost surreal.

It’s quieter.

Simpler.

And sometimes, that’s refreshing.

It reminds you that airports don’t have to be enormous to be memorable.

✈️ So, which one wins?

After thinking about all these airports, I’ve realized something.

I don’t remember them because of their terminals, shops or departure boards.

I remember them because of how they made me feel.

Hong Kong gave me that unforgettable skyline as I descended toward the city.

Heathrow made London feel close.

Dublin gave me a different kind of welcome.

Singapore impressed me with the airport itself.

Dubai and Frankfurt reminded me just how enormous the world of travel really is.

Kuala Lumpur and Penang became part of my Malaysian travels.

Hanoi gave me that feeling of arriving somewhere completely new.

Manila, Cebu and Davao each gave me a different Philippine experience.

Thailand and Indonesia became familiar gateways to places I wanted to explore.

Vientiane showed me that smaller airports can have their own charm.

And Hyderabad?

Well…

Hyderabad gave me a lift experience I’ll probably never forget.

If I absolutely had to choose one favorite, Hong Kong would still get my vote, mostly because of that incredible skyline view while landing.

But I’m not going to rank the rest.

They all have a place in my travel memories, and each one contributed something different to the journey.

After all, airports aren’t really the destination.

They’re the places where one chapter ends and another begins.

Sometimes they greet you with a spectacular view.

Sometimes they simply get you where you need to go.

And sometimes…

they trap you in a lift and give you a story you’ll be telling for years. 😂

So here’s to all the airports I’ve passed through, the ones I remember clearly, and even the ones that have faded a little from memory.

Hong Kong gets the skyline.
Hyderabad gets the lift.
And all the others get a place in the story. ✈️🌏
