A while back, musicians and their supporters were expressing concerns about the acquisition of BandCamp, first by Epic Games, then by Songtradr. So ... how is it all panning out?
Is buying music through BC still a good way to support the artists who make the music we love? Or do you recommend some other platform, or taking the time to find the act's homepage and follow the purchase instructions there?

@inNewMusicWeTrust once you've paid for a track/album on #bandcamp you get to download it, right? So you own a digital copy, unlike a #spotify stream. Just like you would own a cd or record.
BC used to be a great place, but it's in declined since #songtradr bought it and fired half of the personnel. Lot's of bands are jumping ship because of this.

That said this is the one day of the month,(at least at the moment), that you can support artists there without necessarily support #SongTradr so at least there is that...
There is no judgement here, btw, I'm still on #BandCamp at lots of great #Artists I know and love are too. We are some of us working on finding new homes for our music.
My guess is In two years time there will be few active independent artists there, just commercial artists and labels who want "placements"

In these difficult days for #IndependentMusic it's important to show #solidarity with artists as well as @bandcampunited, all of which are affected badly by #Songtradr's acquisition of #Bandcamp.

With #Songtradr’s acquisition of #independentmusic platform #Bandcamp, #EpicGames has laid off half of the latter’s staff, citing Bandcamp’s increasing operating costs over the past few years. Songtradr picked up the company from Epic Games, which only acquired Bandcamp last year, but recently reduced its staff by around 16%.

Wirklich traurig, wie es #Bandcamp gerade nach dem Verkauf an #Songtradr zerlegt (halbe Belegschaft entlassen, Gewerkschaftler*innen traf es überproportional). Das Geschäftsfeld des neuen Besitzers lässt auch nix Gutes für die Zukunft erahnen.
Gibt es irgendeine ethische oder hoffnungsvolle Alternativen am Horizont?

I was thinking about getting my music on streaming platforms, but #Spotify decided to cut the pay of artists without a big enough audience, and give that money to labels.
As for #Bandcamp, all I see related to bandcamp is talk about alternatives and immanent enshitification from #Songtradr but I have been seing people talking about using online players on itch.io for their music, and then using itch as a storefront for it.
I might actually use itch to sell my music, and eventually games? -

Keyes's contempt notwithstanding, it's clear why Bandcamp workers need a union - after the company was flipped twice in rapid succession, its new owners, #EpicGames and #Songtradr, fired all its unionized workers. Keyes responded to coverage of this mass firing by calling the #Pitchfork reporters who wrote about it "absloute amateur journalists."

Personally i hope, that laid-off staff joins working with decentralized federating software, such as Funkwhale, in order to make their ideas future foolproof for creators and listeners alike, saving both from data hording and investor risks for good then.
