  1. #Pitchfork should have an online radio station.

Being a music label, curator, journalist, record store owner and station manager could all now be one job. We need people to trust. People whose only real job is to scour what's out there and tell us what's great. With no concern for what the monied interests want or what opinions will make them seem cool. Then we decide who we agree with and will somehow pay to be our musical guides. They can also build local community by organizing shows.

  3. #Sony Music to Shutter Newly #Unionized #Punk Merch Warehouse | #Pitchfork

    pitchfork.com/story/sony-music

    > The company denies union-busting allegations, saying its closure of #KingsRoadMerch in #Minneapolis was planned long before #union talks began

    😒
    uh huh

    1) sony knows what dealing with warehouses is like. They knew what they were getting into in the beginning. They're an old, massive conglomerate corporation that makes all kinds of things.
    2) Sounds like they want to move everything to china.
    3) Maybe this was their plan from the beginning.

It's important to have unions. It's important to have domestic goods. The more local, the better.

  5. Decompressed hay. That's the half I got out. Took 15 minutes with the excavator to tear it out and hours with the pitchfork to move it into this giant hay mountain in the back of the same barn.

The corner is getting pretty full already (its a lot bigger than it looks, this barn is huge and I'm standing on top of more hay taking the picture).

Now it started raining and I had to roll all my stuff back into the barn so I can't continue.

I did have time to rake up the bottom, which was mostly dust and short stalks and mulched it around the pumpkins. I did that last year with other parts of the barn floor and it proved to be great fertilizer :)

  9. I don't begrudge #Pitchfork for looking for cash via subscriptions, but they've done this super backwards, imo.

    a) They implemented some sort of community review system that literally no one asked for

    b) They hid reviews behind their subscription paywall and are touting the community review features as the main attraction

I think they're right that the reviews are their draw -- their range is pretty eclectic these days, and they have some great writers -- but the quantity of reviews is really sporadic since the cutbacks, hardly enough to justify 5 bucks a month.

And the community review feature actually makes me LESS likely to pay that 5 bucks, not more. I don't want it, I don't need it.

If you're going to charge 5 bucks a month, then make it a legit publication again. Take the features and the interviews and some of the special items back to the pre-layoff levels.

Don't try and charge a monthly fee when your material is a husk of what it once was.

  11. Update and call to action from the Condé Nast Union:

Stand with Condé Nast Union 🚨 We’re calling on you to sign our petition telling management to reinstate the Fired Four, reverse the suspensions, and end the union busting.

    Sign here: actionnetwork.org/petitions/te

This began when Condé Nast laid off the staff from Teen Vogue. Union members demanded answers from management. Management illegally fired four organizers for engaging in protected activity.

  13. This headline might be the greatest example ever of someone thinking their personal and very specific anxieties are newsworthy. It's an almost transcendental instance of #music critic navel-gazing. Even the #Pitchfork editors must be in awe.

  17. For me, the best music was made in the '80s (pop/rock), some alternative rock in the 1990s and early 2000s, and then the Pitchfork indie-era between 2003-2012 (folk, experim. electronic).

Since then, it has been one song here, one song there that I like. Maybe I'm difficult, or old. But given that most GenZ listen to older music too according to Spotify, I think I'm on the right side of things. We currently live in a cultural void.

  19. "Boone’s music is an invasive species in the garden of good taste"

    Damn, that's a cold line.

    pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/b

I feel like #Pitchfork has had a bit more edge in their reviews lately, which is kind of refreshing -- although this album seems like an easy punching bag, tbh.

  23. CW: #uspol #spotify, us politics and inauguration donations

"Spotify Hosts Trump Inauguration Brunch and Makes 150,000 donation to ceremony"

#Pitchfork buries the lede here, as further down they clarify that Apple and Amazon also donated 1 mil each to the Presidential Inauguration Committee.

Real question: when did such donations become common place? Like, I know they've been a thing for a while, but for how long?

  25. I love how quickly we moved from ‘trumps just saying he’ll do those things’ we all knew he would do as fast as possible to ‘oh he’s done WHAT’

When this is all over I hope we drag all the journalists who excused or fluffed trump and musk to the galllows with them. #uspol

  27. Just learned that a bunch of folks formerly involved at #Pitchfork, upon its sidelining by Conde Nast last year, started a new venture called "Hearing Things":

    hearingthings.co/

Worth checking out. I've been subscribing to #TheQuietus for a minute now, but it's nice to see some of these familiar names.

(I know P-fork is controversial --- not really looking to debate the publication's value, just share what I learned for those who might be interested.)

  29. Last week, #Pitchfork gave #PinkFloyd Wish You Were Here a 10.0. As someone who mostly failed to appreciate punk and new wave in the late 70s because my tribe were still into progressive rock, I have to dissent from this.

I'd give 10.0 to The Wall and DSOTM (Pitchfork rated it lower at 9.3), but I've always found WYWH a mixed bag. The title track is a favourite, and I'm still happy to sit through the Shine On suites, but Have a Cigar and Welcome To The Machine are grim AOR nonsense.

    Fight me.
