  3. @guyjantic These things are almost always contested, particularly in parts of the US that were previously Mexican territory. There was actually a long fight over the vowel (among other things) in "Los Angeles," that only settled down after arbitration from the linguist Dwight Bollinger:

  4. It is the BEST THING EVER to see someone investigate a research question you've always had, but do it better than you could've ever done.

Check out Melanie Weireich and Adrian Simpson's #ICPhS2023 paper, "Changes in parents' phonetic parameters during the first year of a child's life: A comparative study of German and Swedish"

Fascinating correlations, and lack thereof, between femininity self-rating of fathers and mothers, and their f0 production over time.

  5. I’m used to GOOSE so fronted it gets parsed as FLEECE, but this morning a young woman was ordering coffee with “oat” milk and the GOAT was so fronted, even *in context* I had to backtrack to unparse it as “eight”

I'm a lecturer at Lancaster University, UK, in the Linguistics Department. I work on the phonetics and sociolinguistics of Scottish Gaelic, and sociophonetics in the north of England.

Here for linguistics chat but also outdoor stuff, running, cats. My cat is called Penny! She is 16 and enjoys snoozing.

  10. Hi folks! I'm a phonetician at UCL who mainly works in #sociophonetics, forensic speech science and #bilingualism. I mostly split my time doing crosswords, reading fiction, and sat on the train doing the above.

  11. Here's a soft #introduction before my migration from [email protected] is complete.

Hi, I'm Joey. I'm a #linguist, more specifically a #sociolinguist and #phonetician, at #BYU. I do research on American English accents and dialects, with most of my recent focus being on #UtahEnglish.

I also think about methods and quantitative stuff a lot within the area of #sociophonetics. I like #rstats and #dataviz.

  12. Time for an introduction! I'm a PhD student linguist with interests in #phonetics and #neuroscience. I primarily work on the neural bases of speech perception. I have other ongoing projects in speech production, #bilingualism, and #sociophonetics.

You can find my first publication on phonetic drift in American learners of French, coauthored with @lisa_b_davidson, at the following link: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/

  13. If you've got lots of speech and you want to detect creaky-voice, here's a good paper to read:
