With public transportation which has been enormously expanded. Private transportation is mostly limited to adapted vehicles for special #MobilityNeeds, and vehicles are available through #SharedOwnership schemes.
It’s concert season in the solarpunk city and Webby has decided to go to the auditorium on her Isetta EV, specially adapted for people with her mobility needs. It can be boarded through a ramp, and the steering, which features an extra wheel to control brakes and accelerator, can be moved out of the way to allow Webby to board and disembark seamlessly. Strictly speaking, the car is not just hers… It is part of a dedicated #CarSharing scheme, managed through a municipalized distributed ownership programme. Next to her, Diego, a #SightImpaired musician, follows the orange path painted on the floor towards the Auditorium: the sensors in his next-gen walking stick can tell him where to turn and how far it is."

Being sight-impaired, people often ask me what my vision is like. As I’ve been sight impaired since birth I can’t explain how my sight differs, as this is all I’ve ever known. I can describe the posterior vitreous detachments though, as they’re more recent. I have large round floaters roughly in my central vision. I’ve drawn them both here, alongside a rough pastel sketch of the view of a cedar tree through my right eye.

Being a partially-sighted artist, I’m fascinated by how differently we all see the world.

Because of the angle of the sunlight, the shadows in this photo of a footprint appear on the lower edge of the imprint rather than the upper edge. Our brains expect light to come from above, so i see this as a footprint shape sticking up out of the sand rather than indented into it.

Also, rather than hound people who don’t use ALT text, just refuse to like or boost pictures that don’t have ALT text.

You could also repost their memes, screenshots, etc. and add your own ALT text. Don’t do this with their own pictures/artwork ofc, but pictures that aren’t theirs anyway are fair game. It’s not about teaching people a lesson; it’s about discouraging ableism and fostering an inclusive environment.

A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals who would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.

Leckhampton Hill Walk is a recent pointillism-style watercolour painting. Unable to drive, I draw much inspiration from local spaces I can walk to.

This is a view from along the cross-country walk up towards the top of Leckhampton Hill.

I love fallen trees and the wealth of microbial biodiversity that makes them their home as the wood slowly decays.

I put the finishing touches to this landscape this week.

Some of the landscapes I am painting, like this one, feature benches. Thanks to Long Covid, I don’t do well with standing up while staying still, so a bench is always a welcome sign to me.

From snowdrops to bas relief.

I like to feel the shapes of leaves and flowers, to stroke grass heads, to feel the texture of bark. Bring sight-impaired, these tactile actions are part of my enjoyment of time in nature.

I am incorporating tactile elements in the local nature-inspired artworks I am creating. This includes bas reliefs of plants.

Have long been suspicious of them since they bury the alt text deep in the thread and out of context, but none of use screen readers.

@darius I also wanted to point out something I've recently realized in a kind of "food for thought" sort of way for #Fediverse devs....

We need to find a way to handle Markdown for #accessibility reasons.

One of the interesting things about Markdown syntax is that it's grammar symbol based, and it's pretty ubiquitous on the web. Most tech folk know it's a syntax language, but a not non-technical folks don't always.... BUT if they've been using various web tools over the course of their lifetime, some basic Markdown syntax can and does leak into the way they write online.

HOWEVER, they usually think of it (if they think of it all) as an extension grammar that developed alongside the Internet because Markdown is a grammar based syntax.

I think the trouble at this point is that there are going to be some people like myself, that you can't break the Markdown habit easily with because in my head that's just good grammar now. I use it everywhere irregardless of whether or not it renders because it doesn't look bad, and most people know that if you put an asterisk around things it's emphasis, or two it's extra emphasis, etc. Heck, I even use it in my handwritten notes, because at this point, to me, it is just good grammar.

That being said, while un-rendered Markdown LOOKS just fine, it does absolutely does not SOUND fine. It's a huge barrier to accessibility to people using, screen readers and I believe the the blind and sight impaired community would probably appreciate a technical solution.

A technical solution will have challenges, yes..... but it might be one of those cases where we have to ask ourselves whether that's easier or if it's easier to convince a ton of people to just not use Markdown syntax here.
