  1. #Blind and #visionimpaired people, and those who design accessible #PenPaper #rpg rulebooks in my followers: How do you read roleplaying game books, and what do you do with charts, map and illustrations?

Right now, most of my rulebook is text (see roa.5f9.de), and relies on purely textual information to convey things. That should be decently accessible with a screen reader.

BUT: I am thinking of redoing the skill "tree" with a hex map, so that each skill learned unlocks those that are touching that hex for future learning.

So, assuming you learn the skill "Physical Combat", that has "Stalwart Defender", "Hold Ground" and "Shield Use" adjacent to it - so these are unlocked now, even though "Shield Use" is part of a different skill group.

Visually, it is pretty easy to lay out and read. But how would that translate that to a screen reader? Would it be enough to list all adjacent skills in a skills description, and then people compile the map in their head?

My design goal is to lower cognitive load and lookups wherever I can, and this is a great way to do it visually, but I fear that it'll make things a lot harder for non-seeing people?

    *edit: Boosts welcome

  2. 3D printing in education & tactile technology in sport, are just two ways technology is revolutionising access to community for people who are blind or vision impaired.

Have you used 3D printing or other tactile technology? Tell us about it!

  3. I'll be the brave one to say this: Please stop making fun of light mode users and people who use high britness settings to their face. Just like how dark mode accomodates your eye comfort, light and neutral modes accomodate some with poor vision as well.

Yes, a lot of light modes are shitty and lazily made (please stop using #FFF white so much), but the people who need it dont deserve being individually maligned

  4. Some #Drycleaners are IMO predatory scum.

A vision impaired elderly relative was for years using the local drycleaners.

Who would return the clothes still stained.

It wasn't until someone else put their glasses on and went through the clothes that had been drycleaned and found stains on most of them that the racket was unearthed.

A stern rebuke to the drycleaners was delivered in person by the discoverer.

    How to assist?
    When to assist?

  5. "Hey, let's include #braille on this container, so that people who are #blind or #visionimpaired can use it, too!" #accessibility gone wrong?

  6. CW: A consumer swears about Tile

#TileApp : Been using this and their Tile hardware to help in finding lost and hidden items for a blind forgetful #ElderlyRelative.

The bastards at Tile have taken to putting a damned advert at the top of their Android app open page.

Thereby making it impossible for the elderly person to use the app.

    Greed, ignorance, don't-give-a-fuck, whatever.

A shit company, a shit product, a shit UX.

  7. Are there any bots/automated accounts that #blind / #VisionImpaired folks like to follow?

Not necessarily image/video-based ones, but I'd really like to see examples of those, if there are any.

  8. So I've been called out for alttexthalloffame.org not being run by someone who's #blind or #VisionImpaired.

And that's fair. I'm very much open to anyone from those communities to get directly involved, so this is my public invitation.

  9. Would also love to hear from the #blind and #VisionImpaired community: who are your favorite webcomic artists that you enjoy following on here?

  10. @VastHypno Good question! I'd imagine yes, with an appropriate warning, but would love to hear from the #blind #VisionImpaired community on how to best approach this.

  11. @Jeffrey there must be some hashtags that could help with your request, but as I am not part of the community I can only guess...

  12. #TIL that actual #VisionImpaired people have pointed out the #ableism in the term "time blindness" (in my context, associated with #ADHD) and have requested that we sighted folk refrain from using it.

Never occurred to me, as I'm privileged, but it makes sense. Time isn't something anyone can actually "see" anyway, so nobody can be "blind" to it. What happens with ADHD (& with other neurodivergences too, I assume, I just don't know which ones) is that we don't perceive the passage of

It has been developed as part of "A Touch of the Universe", a non-profit project for a tactile astronomy kit addressed to children with vision impairments.

  14. Apologies to the #VisionImpaired who like #camelcase. I try but Mastodon does not like me using #CamelCase and very frequently changes what I type, #CamelCase, into #camelcase

Why they'd be doing this I don't know.
It's very disheartening and produces multiple #NegativeUX events - even within one post: try, fail, try, fail, try, fail.

  15. Also, rather than hound people who don’t use ALT text, just refuse to like or boost pictures that don’t have ALT text.

You could also repost their memes, screenshots, etc. and add your own ALT text. Don’t do this with their own pictures/artwork ofc, but pictures that aren’t theirs anyway are fair game. It’s not about teaching people a lesson; it’s about discouraging ableism and fostering an inclusive environment.

  20. A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals who would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.

  25. My new year #resolution after walking down a guided #walking track with eyes closed reading the #Braille notices and finding one that I interpreted, because my Braille isn't good, to say "Don't Touch", is to ask all photographers, especially of wildlife, to #CaptionEverything in #CamelCase so those who are #VisionImpaired can enjoy them the same as everyone else.

I have come to the point where I think to not do so is #Ablist.

Please #boost this and see if we can't have the whole community thinking about the whole community, not just the able.

#CamelCase #hashtags can be read by screen readers which are used by our #VisionImpaired #Brethren throughout the world where the technology can be afforded.

Enjoy todays #KangaroosOfMilkTeeth #KangaroosOfMastodin whose name is Wadjaling.

  26. Hey all, I've set up a new group for online crazy party game invites. That way we can stop spamming our local and public timelines with it LOL
It also lets us get notified when a new invite happens, even if we're on an instance that doesn't allow following of hashtags. Lookin at you Hometown...
    Simply follow:
    @cpinvites
Just make sure to read the intro and rules post on the profile please. Thanks!
If you don't know what Crazy Party is, it is an audio only minigame collection and card battler for PC, with online play capability.
It's totally free and you can download it at:
    pragmapragma.free.fr/crazy-par
Note that you may need to create a new folder and make an exception for that folder in your anti virus program before unzipping the game to it, otherwise your AV will probably try to kill it. This is because games made in the BGT programming language are falsely flagged by most popular anti virus software. If this is too much of a risk for you, I understand, but Crazy Party is widely known to be a safe game by the audio gaming community.
