Mentioning this to a friend, he said, waggishly: “Well, that’s the biggest audience you’ve had in a theatre for some time”.

"Bipolar, Bisexual and Biodegradable.
My name is Jen and I’m 44.
I have a 22 year old daughter called Niamh, a 13 year old son called Rio and a Grandson who was born December 2023. He’s called Lorenzo!
They’re such a sassy bunch and I love them all endlessly.
I suppose, looking back, I’ve always been Disabled. I just didn’t know that I was. Not initially…"

Now that the ink is dry on my new Service Agreement I can now announce that I have been hired to curate the Maker Space exhibition. The contract covers work to be undertaken for Arts Access Victoria’s Future Reset – Maker Space Program from June 2024 to December 2024.
Maker Space is a series of online and in person visual and digital arts workshops designed to help 18-25 year old youths (at my age I'm calling them youths!) learn new skills and give them resources to create new works and new friends with the opportunity to showcase new works at the end of October (which is my job to curate!).
Arts Access Victoria (AAV), currently celebrating 50yrs, is the peak body for arts and disability in Victoria (in so-called Australia).
It is thrilling to work for a disability-led organisation that plays a vital role in state, national and international discourse, platforming the work of Deaf and Disabled artists, arts workers and creatives.
As many of you may know, my multimedia series, "The Reclamation of Terra" was largely created in the Arts Access studios - an AAV studio in Merri-Bek I've been practising my own craft at for 18+ months.
I am so grateful to CJ and the stellar team for asking me to come on this journey. As a proud queer, trans, disabled human I can't wait to champion young voices emerging in the art world.

My latest long-Covid-inspired “breathe” artwork, finished today.
The dots and dashes across the painting spell out “breathe” in Morse code.
I had to learn to breather properly after the trauma of Covid. I’m still learning.

Being sight-impaired, people often ask me what my vision is like. As I’ve been sight impaired since birth I can’t explain how my sight differs, as this is all I’ve ever known. I can describe the posterior vitreous detachments though, as they’re more recent. I have large round floaters roughly in my central vision. I’ve drawn them both here, alongside a rough pastel sketch of the view of a cedar tree through my right eye.

What are you looking at?
If you’d like to look this greylag goose in the eye, he is on display at The Wilson in Cheltenham in the Environments exhibition, until June 25.
My artworks on display are based on local open spaces that I can reach on foot. I have created watercolours, acrylics, mixed-media textiles and tactile works, alongside field recordings, photography and text.

This piece has been a real labour of love. I started painting a big Leckhampton Hill view last year, but just wasn’t happy with it. So I stepped back and worked on a bunch of smaller pieces, getting my mojo back. Finally I went back to start again on this painting, and I’m really pleased with the result 😀

I also finished this piece this week, another local landscape, featuring park benches, this time it’s Pittville Park.

I put the finishing touches to this landscape this week.
Some of the landscapes I am painting, like this one, feature benches. Thanks to Long Covid, I don’t do well with standing up while staying still, so a bench is always a welcome sign to me.

I was back with my paints today after some time off over Easter.
I was working on this Leckhampton Hill view today.
Watercolour on cradled panel
12”x10”It’s a pointillism-style watercolour, a style that I’m really enjoying working in, and that suits my partially-sighted view of the world. And it features a park bench as a Long-Covid resting spot with a great view.

From snowdrops to bas relief.
I like to feel the shapes of leaves and flowers, to stroke grass heads, to feel the texture of bark. Bring sight-impaired, these tactile actions are part of my enjoyment of time in nature.
I am incorporating tactile elements in the local nature-inspired artworks I am creating. This includes bas reliefs of plants.

This is an acrylic painting of Pittville Park that I was working on last week - it’s nearly finished.
The larger landscapes that I am painting during my residency @thewilsonchelt will all include park benches, as this one does. Living with Long Covid means I really appreciate available seats when I am out and about.

I think my mallard painting is now finished, but I’ll leave him for a couple of days then take another look to be sure.
I did reward my muse with plenty of bird seed when I took his photo as the reference for this painting. Quack quack 🦆

A pointillism-style watercolour painting of a mallard that I have been working on. I’m really enjoying working on this style, in both watercolour and acrylic. I enjoy the almost meditative, instinctive process. And I love the loose, dappled effect.

This landscape painting is almost finished…. I know it needs something else, but I’m leaving it for a few days so I can look at it with fresh eyes.
I’m working in a loose, dappled style, which reflects something of the blurred, fuzzy world I live in. And I’m planning to include benches in allthe larger landscapes I am working on, as I often need to sit down when I’m out in nature.

Some of the larger landscapes I’m working on now will include depictions of benches. This is a sign of how I spend time in nature now. I have always loved to walk. But now I often need to sit. Thanks to Long Covid, I don’t do well with standing up while staying still, so a bench is always a welcome sign to me.
