  1. @RuthMalan @hibri @adrianco

Just today I listened to this amazing #MLStreetTalk with @tdietterich recommending:

» I think everybody should read #NancyLeveson book
    'Engineering A Safer World'
because what she says is you don't build a #SafeSystem and then deploy it.
Safety is a really a control concept that a system is...we need to be constantly controlling and modifying the system to keep it safe.
And think it's very similar to this problem of the #UnknownUnknowns «

  3. Obviously it's ridiculous that our safest route to school includes a busy road with no pedestrian or bicycle facilities. This desperately needs to be addressed.

But a #SafeSystem also needs a culture of safety -- including drivers who can recognize when they need to slow down, give space, and have grace.

  4. Using card stock to support a stack of several hundred toilets and calling it an accident when a slight miscue by a worker is followed by all the toilets crashing to the ground is exactly how the US roadway system works.

  5. RT @schlthss: The #MUTCD signal warrant system - made up by a bunch of dudes in a room in the 1930s- is not an appropriate decision making tool in a #SafeSystem people first world.

RT @[email protected] The most commonly applied traffic engineering methodology says you should not put a pedestrian signal here unless there are already at least 20 pedestrians crossing. But people are never going to cross here unless there’s a signal. It’s like a traffic engineering zen koan

  6. Register for the last session in CSCRS’s final Research to Practice Bytes series examining COVID street transformations w/presenter @DrTCombs (hey that's me)
    When: May 31, 2:30-3pm (EDT)
    Where: unc.zoom.us/webinar/register/W
Who: me, you, all our #SafeSystem friends
Why: because #COVID19 changed everything, including how we use, think about, and plan for streets. And also because it's the last #webinar for this amazing organization.

  7. I really, really, really don't give a flying flip about that time you saw a bicyclist run a stop sign.

Also let's stop designing city streets like drag strips.

  8. *How to get Safe Systems wrong...and how to get it right*
This video is one of my absolute favorite products from #CSCRS (Collaborative Sciences Center for #RoadSafety), featuring two of my absolute favorite researchers and colleagues: @sethlaj & Eric Dumbaugh

    It's worth your 30 minutes.

  10. What excuses will we make this time to justify propping up a system that kills over 40,000 humans a year? How many more lives need to be sacrificed before it's worth investing in safer roads, safer vehicles, safer systems?

  12. Got the indomitable and incomparable @sethlaj dropping some #SafeSystem wizardry on my #CompleteStreets students today. I'm sadly missing the fun (thanks, #COVID) but at least got a glimpse of the title slide before they dove in.

Trying to deal with my #FOMO like an adult, but this is one talk I definitely did not want to miss!

  13. #RoadSafety colleagues: In my ongoing quest to reduce #crash exposure for pedestrians at 2-stage crossings (with a median/pedestrian refuge), I'm in search of examples of 2-stage #pedestrian cossings that either:

    * Do not require a second request for a #WalkSignal from the #RefugeIsland (one #BegButton controls both stages), or

    * Immediately trigger a ped phase when a walk signal is triggered from the refuge island.

    Thanks!

  14. There’s still time to join a webinar tomorrow- 12/20- to learn about the issue of darkness and its role as a contributing factor for #pedestrian #crashes. Panelists from Safe Streets Research & Consulting, Oregon Walks, & VHB will share more on research findings and guidance to help improve lighting and visibility. They will also discuss recommended practices from the FHWA Pedestrian Lighting Primer.

Sometimes, when they don't focus on ECs, they talk about autonomous vehicles.

To the SHOULD be focusing on list: Safe System (see The Netherlands)--looking at how the whole system of transportation is structured in support of safety and placemaking.

  16. @NefariousAryq the full article is better, but the thought process should be WHY are motorists speeding, running lights and what could be changed about the roadway design to prevent that instead of saying it's all on the motorists behavior. National #SafeSystem approach is now that it is shared responsibility between motorists and transportation system. Solutions exist. Hoboken NJ as an example: 4 years w/o traffic fatality due to redesigning their roads.

  17. PBIC is happy to be here in the fediverse! Looking forward to participating on this platform with inspiring colleagues and partners and talking about #safe, #accessible, and #equitable #transportation #systems for those who #walk, #bike, and #roll!

  18. 10 Common Pitfalls Toward Creating a #SafeSystem!

My amazing colleagues, @sethlaj and Eric Dumbaugh, discussed how common planning & engineering practices get #SafeSystems wrong, and how we can start to make it right, in today's #CSCRS Practice Bytes webinar
