  1. Four years ago today my kid's school shut down and I coped by making a list of cities that were closing streets to cars so kids could play in them.

Shortly thereafter, I took to social media for help documenting what would soon be a global phenomenon.

It was a hell of a ride.

  2. Heck yeah. My new #paper with Lindsay Oluyede & Carlos Pardo is out today in #TransportReviews:

"The why and how of COVID streets: a city level review of research into planning motivations and approaches during a crisis"

This labor of love examined the processes that led to and shaped #COVIDstreets programs in 28 cities around the world, as reported in peer-reviewed literature. 🧵

  3. I've been saying it from the start: #COVID's most enduring impact on transportation will be how it's changed the practice of street design and transportation planning.
Street-level programs will come and go. But the transportation profession wil never be the same again.

  4. Just wrapped a really sweet study on the impacts of local and state level supports for street space reallocations during the #COVID19 pandemic. Full report is coming; for now, enjoy a summary of our findings & recommendations. Narrated by UNC DCRP student Sam Hayes (who's awesome, btw).

  5. Register for the last session in CSCRS’s final Research to Practice Bytes series examining COVID street transformations w/presenter @DrTCombs (hey that's me)
    When: May 31, 2:30-3pm (EDT)
    Where: unc.zoom.us/webinar/register/W
Who: me, you, all our #SafeSystem friends
Why: because #COVID19 changed everything, including how we use, think about, and plan for streets. And also because it's the last #webinar for this amazing organization.

  6. Doing a thing later this month: "Uplanned #pandemic #planning: Lessons learned from rapid #COVID street transformations."

It's a mini-webinar (aka practice byte) on some stuff I've been working on through the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety. Registration is free, and it's only half an hour!

  7. We'll be talking about what communities & transportation agencies learned from their experiences rolling out #COVID19-related street space changes, and how those experiences are leading to new best practices in allocation/use of #StreetSpace.

What questions do *you* want us to tackle in the session? What lessons do *you* think we need to take away from #COVIDstreets? Drop 'em here before the session & I'll see how many we can get to.

  8. The very beginning of #ShiftingStreets, aka my personal way of coping with the early #pandemic sense of helplessness, which quickly snowballed into the biggest, hardest, most chaotic, most famous, most impactful, and most exciting #research project I've ever undertaken.

    I can't believe it's almost been 3 years...and we're still at it.

  9. ‼️ Do you work for a city or town that has changed its approach to divvying up #StreetSpace as a result of the #COVID19 #pandemic? If so, we need to hear from you!

Since the beginning of the pandemic (3 years ago!) a small team of researchers--with help from an army of volunteer #CrowdSourcers around the world--has been documenting the ways in which city streets evolved to meet changing demands for public space. 🧵

  10. Hey #transportation world: Has your local agency changed its attitudes and perceptions about the use of public #StreetSpace in the wake of the #COVID19 #pandemic? Have you formalized this shift into new #practices?

If so, I'd *love* to hear from you. Please @ me or drop a reply below.

  11. Hey my #PublicSector #transportation #planner & #engineer homies:
If you've received an email from my student research assistant asking if you want to talk about the policies & programs that enabled your city to better respond to changing #travel demands during #COVID19, please say yes. He's a delightful human and it's a really cool, important #study.

  12. #Planning friends in #Colorado #Massachusetts #Connecticut #WashingtonState: do you have a statewide #listserv of #CityPlanning professionals? If so, could a yahoo like me post something to it? Or could you post something on my behalf?

I need to identify some local expertise to add to our interview sample on a US-based #study of the planning processes & policies behind #CovidStreets

  13. Hi Mastofriends. I need some help. I'm looking for information about a few very specific cities' #COVIDStreets interventions. Specifically, I need details about:
    #Trikala #Greece
    #Leicester & #Middlesborough #UK
    #Katowice #Poland

If you're familiar with any of those cities' efforts to reallocate #Street space during the #Pandemic, please let me know! We're plugging gaps in our #ShiftingStreets #COVID #mobility #database.

reply in the thread, or at unc.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form

    Thank you!!!

  14. HI EVERYBODY! I finally found my fediverse #ForeverHome on transportation.social . It seems I'm not clever enough to have brought the accounts I follow with me from mastodon.social (which my partner affectionally calls "the lobby"), so please help me find you again!
Did I follow you? Should I have been following you? LMK!
