The other night the kid and I e-biked home from a late theater rehearsal via a cross-town #greenway in #Carrboro and #ChapelHill. It was a clear enough night that she was picking out constellations as I pedaled.

We also saw 3 deer and an owl. More greenways, please!

I tend to avoid #NewYearsResolutions, but not this year.
In 2024, I resolve to push back every single time someone uses the term #VRU, or #VulnerableRoadUser.

It's a transportation catchall for "humans not safely ensconsed inside a motor vehicle," and it's lazy, inaccurate, offensive, and counterproductive.

Every morning, my kid and I #bike to #school, riding side-by-side down a neighborhood connector road with no pedestrian or bicycle facilities. Lots of people in cars drive past us. They give us space and don't yell about not riding single file.

I like to think this is a sign of the beginnings of a culture shift in #ChapelHillNC.

My bike camera is mounted almost 3' off the ground. There is zero reason for a vehicle this size to exist, much less to roam neighborhood streets while kids are out walking & biking to school.

This morning we met up with 6 (SIX!) other #KidsOnBikes during our ride to school. Six smiling, happy, slightly flushed faces, all bright eyed and ready to start their day.

The activity, socialization, & independence these kids are getting is no small thing. The change in my kid's resilience & attitude since she's been riding her own bike to school has been remarkable.

When we deny kids #SafeRoutesToSchool, we deny them a huge part of their life.

I've spent a long time sitting at this pedestrian signal, waiting for a car to come along and trigger a walk phase. But some time in the past few months it was quietly switched to come on automatically when the adjacent traffic light turns green. And it's LOVELY.

I created this #video a year ago to help address the ridiculous conditions US #roadways impose on #pedestrians. This is a 2-stage crossing on the way to my kid's elementary school. Complying with the #walk signal here means a 3-minute crossing, including a substantial wait in an unprotected refuge island.

I don't understand why DC's #VehicleSize #tax isn't the norm. Large #vehicles are freeloaders. Their weight accelerates pavement wear, increasing road maintenance cost. Their length reduces space available for other cars, increasing congestion. Their width increases the risk of sideswipe collisions. Their height increases the risk of fatalities & serious injuries when crashes do happen.
It's ridiculous we don't charge extra for all that.
