  1. Staying in the red zone again, and trying a #sullivans Maltings Irish Ale

New to me, malty and slightly sweet, biscuit notes and a caramel closer. Light and refreshing.

  2. Bottled the red ale tonight. 75 twelve ounce bottles, 3 pints, and half of a coffee mug.

I had repaired my bottle capper that has a sheared gear, put another handle 180 degrees so the sheared gear isn't on the capping stroke, works much better. No mods to the capper itself, 100% removable. It's about 100 years old.

I primed each bottle with 2.1 grams of dry table sugar.

  3. 7 days later, aka today... Wednesday, the Red ale is at 1.014, it's still bubbling very slowly and 1.012 would hit the estimated numbers so I'll check it over the next couple of days to see if it's moving.

  4. Man, false Fall hitting hard with a high temp of 58F! Wild swings are us in MN. Need to find some heat…

    #dragonsMilk Crimson Keep

Just divine - malty, caramel, cherry, with a boozy tart finish. Warming all over!

  5. More yard work and time outside today, overcast and the wind is coming up - #hereBeDragons 🌬️ 🐉 💨

Take a break in the Crimson Keep, an excellent BA red ale from #dragonsMilk

Malty cherry lead, notes of toffee and oak, with a tart lasting finish. Refreshing!

  6. A California Smithwick's. Nice red/amber color, faint malty nose, a beautiful dense cream-colored head, caramel malty taste (but not sweet) with just a hint of hop bitterness and modest carbonation, clean finish. Low alcohol. In other words, Smithwick's. $17/16oz-4-pack, but a minority-owned brewery and Made In America! 🇺🇲

  7. Fermented Friday: 2025 Winking Lizard Beer Tour 12 – Thirsty Dog Irish Setter Red Ale Pint Glass (174)

In honor of Lance, the first dog I ever knew, an Irish setter who always seemed to tower over 3 year old me.

  8. Seeing red after another day packed with back to back to back context changes.

Find some focus in the Crimson Keep, Here Be Dragons!

#dragonsMilk has malty cherry flavors, caramel background and a tart finish. Barrel-aged too!

  9. This one has a best buy date that is 4 months from now. It was brewed about 2 months ago. This doesn't make sense.

  10. Happy Mother’s Day! After taking my partner of 34 years to Costco (I’m a romantic) we’re kicking back with some good wine for her and a #DragonsMilk Crimson Keep for me!

Barrel-aged Red Ale, Malty sweetness, cherry and caramel notes. Another brilliant dragon from #NewHollandBrewing

  11. @enog I saw the label and immediately thought of you. 🙂 The brewer managed to work in a shark and red liquid, withing killing anything.

My son likes it a lot; I still haven't decided. It's more amber than red. Intense hops and intense malt, well balanced, although more bitter than I"d really want in an amber; I'm not sure I'd describe an ale that's this bitter as “crushable.” There's a lot of sweet pine/herbal/medicinal flavor at the front. Still a good one to try for folks who like that dual intensity of hops and malt.

  12. It was a very tough week for us, flying to Orlando for our son’s soccer games and experiencing and following up with an emergency situation. But I now see the things will go back to normal. So, winding down the week with this red ale and mind preparing for the busy weekend - kids’ swim training, soccer games, and Japanese school, maybe flying fishing if I can 🤔 I also need to work on a lot of things that I couldn’t do during the past few weeks 😞 It will be okay, I think 🤔

  13. @enog Yep, I had the same reaction to the label as you did. A lot of the hoppy reds play off the same idea, e.g. Pizza Port Shark Bite, Evans Joaquin Dead. Pipeworks is an outstanding brewery, and I'd agree Blood of the Unicorn is a good example of the style.

That said, my own taste runs more to the European reds with less hops and more malt: Strike's Colossus of Clout, Fort Point's Westphalia, Federation Utopia Planitia (a rye), and of course the true Irish reds like Smithwicks. But I love trying the hoppy ones, and given your fondness for IPAs I suspect you might like the hoppy reds more.

  14. An experienced beer shop staff recommended me to try this red ale. I also remembered that @alameth was tooting about red ales🤔
Although I am not comfortable with the horror label design, the beer itself is not bad - I am comfortable bringing this beer to our friend’s house😄
Malty and bready, but still very hoppy like IPA. Also, the beer head is very frothy and looks great. This seems to work as an introduction to red ale for someone like me 😊
Goes well with dark chocolate 😋

  15. While quaffing the Quad I had thoughts of #CentralWatersBrewing Call Me Old Fashioned, so had to compare side-by-side!

The #BoulevardBrewing Quad is SO much better, smoother and less harsh on the finish. The Bitters in the Old Fashioned really change the finish and hide the cherry notes.

  16. @enog I'll see your IPA... and raise you a Red Ale. 🙂 Reds have been my “go to” beer since I discovered Boont Amber in 1992. But there haven't been a lot of choices. Now new reds are appearing all over the place.

This Pizza Port Shark Bite, from Carlsbad, California, is an excellent example of the newcomers. Hoppy all the way through like an West Coast IPA, but malty and roasted, with not too much of either, a real bite and very little sweetness. Holds its own against by category favorite, Federation Utopia Planitia. I'm thinking I need to put these new American Reds into a different category; Boont Amber, Smithwicks, and O'hara's Red are all outstanding ales, but with a lot less bite.

  17. Starting a red beer brew... Not decided if it's going to be hoppy or not... #IPA or #RedAle or #RedIPA

  18. Doing a repeat on Call Me Old Fashioned on a hot day in MN, and my take is pretty much a repeat too 😀

#CentralWatersBrewing takes an ale spin on and old fashioned with strong cherry, brandy, and bourbon notes, subtle orange and a bitter/sour finish

Colder is better, a nice side trip outside the #stoutiverse

  19. My favorite beer for the past year, and one my son and I agree on. Most rye ales I've tried are more like barleywine. Here the rye is subtle, adding some character, a bit of spicy sweetness, very different from malt, that balances the moderately strong herbal hops. I love the nose, the taste, and the finish. 🥰

There's some really solid beer in the East Bay. I need to get out there more, and (if needed) crash at my daughter's place if I've had a little too much.

Meanwhile I need to rethink how I photograph my pours. I like what @enog has been doing. These shots on my workbench are fun, but really don't show off the beer's color.

  20. Interrupted #stoutThursday due to an event tomorrow, we’ll do #barrelAgedWednesday with this interesting brew from #CentralWatersBrewing

Call Me Old Fashioned steps into the mixed drink taste realm with strong cherry 🍒 brandy and bourbon notes, subtle orange and a slight bitter/sour finish. It’s a mid-body summer sipper, serve it cold!

  21. @enog I used to always take a picture of my first pour of a new beer, and write down my thoughts about it. Since leaving Facebook I've only shared my thoughts with my beer buddy (a.k.a. my son) and random coworkers. Until now. 🙂

After a period of dropping $100+ every time I went to my beer store. I embarked on a mission to buy brews that were local *and* reasonably priced, less than $2 for a 12oz can or $3 for a 16 oz can. And here we are.

East Brother promotes their Red IPA as something between an Amber and a true IPA. It's actually nothing like an IPA, but it is a solid red ale. There's floral and fruit up front, a touch of bitterness, and a proper medium body with flavors of caramel / roasted malt and a bit of sweetness, very balanced. The finish is startlingly astringent, and gets unpleasant as I finish the glass. So I'd call it solid, but there are other local reds I like better. I would like to try it on tap.

  22. The mid-winter seasonal Red Haze from #CascadeLakesBrewing returns this month. Red Haze is a hazy #RedAle brewed with Altus and Cascade hops, designed to bridge the transition from winter to spring over the next several months. It’s 6.4% ABV with 40 IBUs and available on draft and in 12-ounce cans.

  23. This evenings beer is a Laubbläser by Wittendorfer Brauerei Neumünster. It's an excellent hoppy red ale, a very underrated beerstyle if you ask me.

  24. Impression #4 von der #Lidl #Craftbeer-Aktion 08/2022.

Irisches #RedAle, im Verhältnis zu Kilkenny m.E. süßer und malziger. Mir hat es geschmeckt. Die beiden Exemplare von "The Crafty" waren i. Ggs. zu den anderen beiden für mich durchaus in Ordnung, wenn auch nicht sensationell.

    Keine lange Rezension. 7.5/10. #beersofmastodon @beersofmastodon
