  1. So... the 34/70 in my international dark lager took it up to 79F while fermenting (I have no temperature control) and we'll see how it turns out after it's ripped through all the sugar in literally 36 hours. I'll bottle that Monday.

On tap for Thursday night/Friday (I'm thinking of doing an overnight mash) - an English IPA I'm calling "What Ales You". I mean, it's an ale, so if it gets warm, not as big a deal, right?

  2. The beauty of modern tech is I can monitor my beers remotely when they're fermenting.

The downside is this - Get the Golem is in my basement, while I'm out of town. I'm doing this lager for once "for real" with 34/70 (lager yeast), because it's supposedly tolerant of higher temperatures. I pitched it around 70F, and figured that'd be fine.

It's at FG after 48 hours... and rose during fermentation to nearly 79F.

I'm really kind of concerned it'll be an estery mess, but we'll see in a few weeks, right?

  3. Peshastin Saison. This beer was fermented with wild yeast that I caught from Saskatoon berries I picked on a hiking trail near Peshastin, WA.

The beer is a little bit fruity and very faintly tart. There's a nice maltiness despite it being fairly dry. It's a good culture that makes good beer, but nothing major is standing out here. I guess I'm quite fortunate to be able to kind of dismiss perfectly fine wild yeast cultures now, LOL

  4. Drinking a glass of Arnegard gong pale ale whilst I keg and dry hop said ale. The gong made quick work of the beer fermenting it down to 1.006 in less than a week.

  5. Last year around this time, we harvested most of the hops.

Look at the measly cones on the Hüll Melon this year 😭

I hope this just means that the Hüll Melon behaves as it should and takes until September to be ready for the harvest. But the wizard of the plants believes that the plants got damaged during those absurd heat waves.

    Climate change sucks!

  6. Brew day! It feels like it's been so long since I've actually gotten something done in this regard and... well, it's been so long.

Today's batch is Get the Golem, an international dark lager (BJCP category 2C), and we're trying this one with actual lager yeast instead of kveik for once.

    Cross your fingers!

  7. @petrillic I think that getting efficient at the annoying parts of your hobby is good. For example for #homebrewing it is quite nice to get efficient at cleaning, yes it is half of the hobby but it is (at least for me) bit tedious.

I like to just get it done so I can focus more on the fun stuff like coming up with recipes or trying to figure out how to use some new variety of hops. That are the parts I am quite inefficient mostly by try and error.

  8. I found out that there is a German hop variety called Ariana.

If that plant reaches a height of six meters it is called Ariana Grande, right?

  9. My new JaDeD chiller arrived today. My youngest is already mocking me.

Me: Look at all this pretty copper.
Him: <reading> "The output side of the chiller becomes extremely HOT during use." Isn't that the opposite of what should be happening, it getting hot?
Me: You know how this works, right?
Him: <being obnoxious> It's a chiller, Abba. It should be cold, not hot.
    Me: <side-eye>
Him: Yes, yes, I know how these things work. It was funny.

  10. "So what do Hallertauer Tradition hops smell like?"

    "Hops... DUH!"

(But joke aside, hopfenforschung.de is quite a resource for German hop varieties)

  11. What's Your Leaven Worth?

This is a saison fermented with yeast I captured from wild cherries that I picked in Leavenworth, WA last summer. It's nice and fruity with a little bit of tartness. It's really a pleasant beer, especially after the freaking moth infestation ordeal.

It seems their leaven is indeed worth something. I should probably try to make some bread with it as well

  12. One of the joys of competitive #homebrewing is pouring yourself a beer that just medaled at a competition.

And then hearing from some of your fellow competitive brewers asking if you're planning on sending out any of said beer for them to sample.

  13. The Bière de Garde ended up at a final gravity of 3.5°P. That's a bit sweeter than I anticipated and uncharacteristically lazy for ye olde Nottingham yeast.

However the additional sweetness works super well with the marmalady hop flavors and the assertive but smooth bitterness. It's more like an American Pale Ale really. Except that all ingredients are from Southern Hesse.

Seems like I have created the Südhessisch Pale Ale 🍻

  14. TIL that apparently FedEx Ground delivers on Sunday. So the Concentric Hydra I ordered'll be here over the weekend.

I get to revise my brewing schedule to put the International Dark Lager ("Get the Golem") back on Tuesday. 😂

  15. I can honestly say that an extra year has not improved the honey oktoberfest I brewed last year.

One of the few friends that I give my homebrew to found a bottle in the back of his fridge a week ago, and I had a feeling that was what it was.

Alas. This is a recipe that's not being rebrewed.

  16. Ugh! Both of the beers I brewed ~2 weeks ago have a nasty vinyl/chlorophenol off flavor. This is thanks to the local water supply treating the water with chlorine. I thought I had solved the issue with an inline filter on the hose and treating the water with sulfite before brewing, but I think I may have forgotten to do the sulfite 😑

I guess I'd better make preparations to brew tomorrow. But right now it's time to feed a bunch of beer to the lawn 😖

  17. @dukepaaron @serge I've got a hobby for you that wholly encourages bad puns. #homebrewing

  18. Her: Are you aware of how much beer you have in the basement?
Me: It's not as much as it looks like.
Her: It looks like a lot.
    Me: It's 'some'.
    Her: It's a lot.
Me: There's a case of empties down there, an empty case, and while there are 3 or 4 full cases, the rest are half at most.
Her: It's still taking up a lot of space.
Me: So's all the other stuff down there.
Her: Yes, but we're talking about your beers.
