I took some time today to learn how to make a trendline graph for statistics pertaining to 2 similar processes for one of my clients. This is created using #QlikView, a #dataanalytics visualizer by the #Qlik company. The #UI does not switch to dark mode easily: it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to look good. As far as #UX goes, Qlik can improve their application a lot.

Ah, I missed making charts in #Qlikview.
(Seriously, I'm not sure that working in #PowerBI, #Tableau, #Qlikview and #Excel is good for my mental health.)

Well, my first attempt at a #MakeOverMonday as I continue to learn/play #Tableau

Current thoughts, compared to #QlikView, I like Tableau's simplicity to create a simple visualisation and the Story elements look cool, but need to figure out (learn) calculated fields and its version of Set Analysis.

Also, feels less free than QlikView, but that is probably a lack of knowledge on my part.

When it comes to the BI & data visualization change what I'm liking the most is the technical challenge to extract insights. Working with #SQL, #Python, #Pandas, #Excel, #SSMS, #SSIS, #SSAS, doing #ETL... It aint easy but it is rewarding. Also learning a lot using #Tableau, #Qlikview and #Talend.

Hardest and least appealing to work with so far has been #SSRS, but I like the results when I manage to get what I want :)

In today's #WTF, #GUI designers, I present to you a data analysis dashboard system that lets us place, edit, move, and align widgets. But there is no obvious way to make the widgets the same size. Here's the #protip: if we don't see it, it might as well not exist at all. In this case the widgets can all be resized together by dragging their resize handles. And thanks, #QlikView.

If your #dataVisualization tool offers such features, make sure to describe them: do not assume that your product is perceived as intuitive as you feel it is. You have extensive experience with your product, whereas us users may never touch certain parts of it.

Also, offer a way to lock changes to a visualization. #QlikView and #QlikSense are built to empower their users, but many of my coworkers don't need and don't want that power.

Maybe we should use a different tool.

#qlikview can let users apply and store personal changes, visible to them, only.

In this case the report was a pivot table. After development delivers a report, QlikView lets users change the display order and position of columns. By simply dragging and dropping. Which can lead to columns getting shown as rows, and rows as columns. Pivotted.

I didn't realize that.

Neither did the coworker who reported the problem.

It took me several hours of trial and error to find the solution.

My team is responsible for maintaining the products and servers, even though we didn't develop most of the products.

The other day a coworker filed a support request: their report was showing up differently than before.

Today I found why it did what it did.

#TIL: if a #QlikView document fails to load data, or if you abort it, and it asks you to reload with last known data, say no! Because if you do, it will throw away any layout changes you made.

I've been writing a manual that instructs our #QlikView users how to switch their credentials from local server accounts to network accounts.

I was hoping to use #MSSway. But it refuses to start. So I'm using #MSPublisher. On #MSWindows it's the best knock-off of #AldusPagemaker. And included in #Microsoft's Enterprise plan for #MSOffice.

But for some reason all it's font themes are titled in Arabic. Which I don't read...

The other day we received a support request about a dashboard we had a contractor make in #QlikView. They had lost a list box that let them further limit the data.

We have source control. That list box has not existed in the main dashboard for the past year.

So we ask further, and find out that it was a list box put into the user's realm. Which QlikView happily saves for each user. And doesn't share with others. Not even us tech support.

#QlikView #NPrinting16 really is a pain. It has these "Save and Close" buttons all over, and they do NOTHING. #businessIntelligence #DataAnalysis

#QlikView still forces us to reload the document to enjoy it in the updated system colors, but that may just not be something they can fix, technically.

Making #QlikView dashboards adhere to #MSWindows system colors (chosen by the user) is not always straightforward.

The #ListBox object for instance, by default, does not let us set a text foreground color. We can set the background to syscolor(5)… which can result in a completely #unusable #UserInterface.

To fix this, we must override presentation settings. Set the selection style to 'LED Check box', then exit the settings. Then reopen settings and set syscolor (8) as the Font Color.

Today I learned: #QlikView allows us creators to use operating-system-defined colors. Updated colors will reload when the document reloads. And that's pretty impressive.

Inside the various layout setting dialogs, look for the ability to specify a calculated color, and specify the SysColor(int) function. The integer index maps to the #MSWindows API for system colors.

I've been implementing #QlikView #SectionAccess: a way to limit what logged-in users can see in a #businessIntelligence dashboard.

You're looking at the same dashboard through the eyes of 3 different people. Each sees exactly what they're allowed to see. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is far more complex than necessary, though, in QlikView.

#Nprinting 11 with #QlikView 12 and #MSEXCEL crashes so often during template development that it's best to save every step and close the entire NPrinting document, prior to requesting a preview. Crashes cause recent changes to get undone. It's a highly frustrating, low-productivity experience.
