  1. Wanting to read some old space adventures, I picked a Jack Vance book pretty much at a whim. Can't go wrong with Jack Vance, right? He's one of the big names.

I have to say, City of the Chasch is pretty bad.

Not offensively terrible, but the prose is mid-tier fanfic level at best, and there is no plot. It's just things happening with no coherent direction anywhere to be seen.
I have similar feelings about Edgar Borroughs, but at least he was 50 years earlier.

  2. Is Horizon Zero Dawn a Planetary Romance game? 🤔

The planet in question is Earth, and it's inhabitants humans. But it has the pre-modern society, spectacular landscapes, ancient ruins, giant (robot) monsters, and weird science. And endless daring swashbuckling!

  3. Mastodon doesn't really seem to be the place to have meaningful discussions, but maybe some interesting thoughts could come out of this anyway:

Aside from not having regular space travel (though maybe airships), are there significant differences between #PlanetaryRomance and #SpaceOpera? Are there really differences in stock characters, stock plots, and archetypes?
Couldn't Dune just as well (or even more) be called Planetary Romance than Space Opera?

  4. Writing down some notes for iconic elements that I should remember to feature regularly in my #SpaceOpera / #PlanetaryRomance kind of game world, I noticed this strong pattern of contrasting pairs:

    Swords and Guns
    Horses and Hoverbikes
    Nobles and Street Gangs
    Palaces and Heavy Industry
    Magic and Electronics

It's not just that these exist in the same world that defines this style. It's that people constantly mix and match both with no dissonance.

  5. Somehow we've come to a point where Space Opera does mysticism much better than High Fantasy.

In fantasy, deities, spirits, supernatural forces, and realities beyond human perception are simple taken for granted. There is nothing mysterious or unexpected about them.
It is very rare that I come across any works of High Fantasy that feel in any way magical or wondrous. 😕

  6. Interesting essay I found: "Dune", for example, is set in a space-operatic universe, but really is a planetary romance (and perhaps the apex of the entire genre). Yet of late the whole term has disappeared and been subsumed into "space opera". 🤔

  8. Avatar: The Way of Water, and mind uploading

A blog post about the movie, along with some fan speculation about what the mind uploading (or transference) technology and equivalent functionality in the Pandoran ecology might mean for where these movies are going.

Have you read the #Dune Saga by #FrankHerbert?
However, vocabulary might not be easy.

Where it definitely is not easy, but a must-read, nonetheless, is #IsaacAaimov's #FoundationTrilogy.

A much easier read, but a really old one and in the #PlanetaryRomance genre, is the #Barsoom franchise, featured yesterday in our #SciFiSaturday on the #Fediverse:
