@bookstodon It appears I want the world to end.
I recently finished #EarthAbides and have ordered #TheDeathOfGrass and have #ACanticleForLeibowitz on my TBR, though I don't own a copy yet. #TheLongTomorrow by #LeighBrackett sounds interesting too, but what else might interest me?
It's Payday next week...

Again the bird-like call came, very soft this time, but sounding much closer. There was a grove of trees perhaps sixty yards away. The two men turned toward it, curious to see if possible what sort of creature was singing in the night.
Leigh Brackett's The Ginger Star is a fine fast-moving, action-packed, atmospheric1974 sword-and-planet adventure and a first contact story. Brackett was at her best describing decaying civilisations and the planet Skaith qualifies as that.

Heath stood braced against the rail, staring out into the hot indigo night.
The mists rose thick from the Sea of Morning Opals. They crept up out of the mud, and breathed in clouds from the swamps. The slow wind pushed them in long rolling drifts, blue-white and glimmering against the darker night.

But instead of heading to Hollywood after the end of the pulps, Edmond ended his long career at DC Comics. She died from cancer in 1978, but not before turning in the first draft script for what would become “The Empire Strikes Back!” Although her script was rewritten by others, many key elements remain.

The great science fiction writer Leigh Brackett was #BOTD
The “Queen of Space Opera” wrote SF/F for the pulps of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1944 she wrote her first mystery novel, which came to the attention of legendary director Howard Hawks. When Hawks needed help on an adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s ‘The Big Sleep’…

Leigh Brackett's 1944 novel No Good from a Corpse is fine hardboiled stuff. A PI takes a case for a client he hates. There's a rich assortment of crooked PIs, deranged alcoholics, insane ex-cons and as many no-good dames as you could wish for.

Any weird fiction fans here? I'm talking about the real stuff, from Weird Tales of the 1920s/30s.
I got into the genre in the usual way, through Lovecraft. And in the usual way I started exploring work of various writers in his circle, and the work of writers whom Lovecraft admired.
Hashtags for some of the weird fiction writers I like:

I'm a sci-fi fan but my tastes are strictly old school. I don't read anything written since the 90s. And not much written since the 60s, apart from some of the cyberpunk writers.
One of the first sci-fi novels I read was Arthur C. Clarke's The City and the Stars and I still regard it as one of the half dozen best sci-fi novels of all time.

Leigh Brackett’s sword-and-planet adventure The Sword of Rhiannon was published in book form in 1953. It had been serialised in Thrilling Wonder Stories in 1949, as Sea-Kings of Mars.
The Mars of this story is now largely a desert planet but it had a glorious past and was once green and lush.
There's an ambiguous hero. And there's a beautiful but evil queen, always a plus.
