  5. Scythe – Boiled Alive Review By Grin Reaper

In the midst of a recent metal deep-dive, Romania’s Scythe skulked out from a Bandcamp back alley and bludgeoned me with the flat side of their blade, knocking me senseless with scuzzy shenanigans. We weren’t graced with a promo for Scythe’s self-released debut, but Boiled Alive packs in so much grimy panache that after my first listen, I had it shortlisted as someThing You Might Have Missed. Rather than wait several months before bringing attention to Boiled Alive, though, I volunteered to burn some midnight oil and write about this quartet from Constanța. Why did Boiled Alive get me so hot and bothered? Scythe’s brand of death metal grips you by the throat and never relents, evoking many influences while creating something uniquely their own. After the dry spell I’ve had with death metal lately, I finally found something I unapologetically adore. So step right up, put your head on the chopping block, and let Scythe have a whack at your earhole.

Scythe doesn’t make grand statements about existentialism or introspection, nor do they redefine a genre. First and foremost, Scythe is here to serve up sickly, sticky licks with blithe recklessness. This fearsome foursome drops track titles that ooze with enough viscera (“Liquified Entrails,” “Of Pure Goriness”) to squelch onto a Cannibal Corpse setlist while harkening to soundscapes defined by Pestilence and Autopsy. Throughout Boiled Alive, the pace oscillates between frenzied paroxysms and plodding crawls, often within the same song (“Necrophilic Corpse Orgies”). Though it would be easy for these dynamics to jostle listeners, the savvy songwriting avoids clumsy transitions and affords an entrancing experience. Ultimately, Scythe guides listeners through a curated gallery of horror that’s as thrilling as it is fulfilling.

    Boiled Alive by Scythe

Interweaving Asphyxiating drudges with Mercilessly hectic eruptions, Scythe concocts a unique brew all their own. Boiled Alive simmers with ever-shifting tempos, imbuing the album with vivacity and a disarming blend of chops and accessibility.1 Where “Liquified Entrails” opens with a cannonade evoking an unholy union of Priest’s “Riding on the Wind” and Merciless’ “Souls of the Dead,” “Of Pure Goriness” flits between a mid-paced slink and rabid surges of hostility, and sounds like the crossbred bastard of Cannibal Corpse and Dismember. “Necrophilic Corpse Orgies” and “Tenebrous Decease” expose Scythe’s ability to nimbly jump between accelerated clips and more measured velocities, electrifying with their seamless agility as they navigate whipsawing tempo changes with a sophistication that is all the more impressive considering the band has no other projects or credits to their names.2

The musicianship on Boiled Alive is especially tight for a band formed just three years ago, and the mix highlights the band’s technical acumen. Rather than feature the glossy veneer popular with bigger labels, Boiled Alive sports a dry, natural texture that allows Scythe’s instrumentation to glisten. Reminiscent of the production on Invictus’s release last month, every whack on a tom and clang on the bass is afforded an organic timbre, imparting a raw aesthetic that lets Scythe sizzle. Whether rattling off meticulous snare rolls (“Necrophilic Corpse Orgies”), punky, snare-kick combos (“Plastered in Phlegm”), or playful cymbal splashes (“Of Pure Goriness”), David Rolea flays the skins on every track. Meanwhile, bassist and vocalist Andrei Constandache wields a gorgeously fat low-end tone3 as he assaults the mic with a menacing rasp. Not to be outdone, guitarists Mihai Panait and Andrei Oglan buzzsaw their way through Boiled Alive’s eight tracks, focusing on knotty riffs over wankfest solos. While the drums are the star of the show, Scythe suffers no weak links.

Part-thrashy, part-doomy, and all deathly, Scythe swings for the fences on Boiled Alive. And dammit, it’s Great. This beast writhes and squirms with purulent pizzazz, and I’m guilty many times over of restarting Boiled Alive as soon as the final track concludes. I wish solos were more prevalent across the album, and Constandache’s vocals, while effective, could use some variety, but these nitpicks should be taken as wishlist items for ol’ Grin rather than anything inherently off with Boiled Alive. Scythe discharges riffs and fun with an enviable effortlessness that should have death metal dealers and appreciators paying attention. In a genre with so much competition, Boiled Alive stands above the rabble, and I anxiously await the next time the Scythe comes down.

  6. Terror Corpse – Ash Eclipses Flesh Review

    By Saunders

Already boasting a killer debut EP to their name in 2025, courtesy of the sick, old school deathgrind mayhem comprising Systems of Apocalypse, Texan wrecking crew Terror Corpse hit the ground running in their short time together. The newly minted outfit come seasoned with underground cred, featuring members that have logged time in the likes of Malignant Altar, Oceans of Slumber, Necrofier and Insect Warfare. Recording the EP as a five-piece, debut full-length Ash Eclipses Flesh finds Terror Corpse stripping back to a trio and shifting tact musically. While remnants of the heavily grind-influenced charge of Systems of Apocalypse remains intact, Terror Corpse mine the fetid soil of vintage death metal, citing the likes of Celtic Frost, Incantation and pre-2000s Morbid Angel as key influences. Throw in shades of Immolation, Terrorizer, early Carcass and Exhumed, and you have a recipe for a good old-fashioned beatdown. However, don’t be fooled into thinking Terror Corpse is a run-of-the-mill act riding the decaying coattails of legacy acts of the past. Ash Eclipses Flesh respects the past, while paving its own twisted path through grisly killing fields and dank caverns of grotesqueries.

Terror Corpse merge old timey underground aesthetics with a vital injection of their own character and modern appeal. Presenting a grimy and wickedly brutal collection of grind-encrusted old-school death, Terror Corpse both encompasses and deviates from the deathgrind formula of the EP, pivoting into deathlier, guttural realms. Any disappointment of the sound shift is swiftly bludgeoned on opening track “Pyre of Ash and Bone.” The song makes a hellish statement, hammering down violent, riffy death marches through menacing atmospheres, as uber low guttural vox, squealing leads, and livewire drumming seal the deal. Dobber Beverly again cements his status as a cult legend in extreme metal drumming. Also handling guitar duties with main vocalist Mat V, the duo reinforces the album’s retro, brutish charms, primitive clubbings, and ominous atmosphere with a vital collection of top-shelf riffs, mangled leads, and headbangable delights.

Ash Eclipses Flesh revels in shifting gears from dense, noisy chaos and relentless blasts to knuckle-dragging grooves, and monstrous, caverncore-esque swarms, Terror Corpse also incorporate infectious bursts of thrashy death and gnarled, punkish grind into the fray. After a solid, respectable beginning, Ash Eclipses Flesh really hits stride on third cut “Womb of the Hollow Earth,” and it’s a ripping, high-potency ride from here on in. Elsewhere, they delve into death-doom slogs, inflicted upon the devastating “Fallout Obliteration,” and punishing mid-section on the lurching, vicious stomp of “Sons of Perdition.” Refusing to neglect their classic grindcore and splattery deathgrind roots, Terror Corpse bring the filth and dual vox, including shrieky highs, to the thrashing intensity of “Nuclear Winter.” Meanwhile, the tremendous “The Hollow That Devours” intersperses cavernous double bass rumbles and thrashy bursts with immense mid-paced chuggery and thick, insidious grooves.

Versatile tinkering of their songwriting formula ensures the songs chart diverse territories, while remaining uncompromisingly brutal and wickedly infectious. Even the closing cover of Celtic Frost’s “Into the Crypts of Rays” doesn’t feel wasteful or tacked on. Terror Corpse inject the song’s anthemic, punky edge with their own beefed-up deathgrind spark. Beverly’s energetic, nuanced drumming proves essential as the album’s beating heart, driving the fluctuating pulse rate and need for speed, slick tempo shifts, and rambunctious, sewage-coated grooves. The power of the riff compels, not through technical wizardry, but courtesy of a firm understanding of the genre’s classic origins and grimy, atmospheric underpinnings. Infectious and rancidly beefy riffs, wildly unhinged leads, and sinister melodic currents define the excellent axework. There are no glaring flaws or major drawbacks preventing a strong recommendation. Perhaps you could argue Terror Corpse aren’t doing anything especially new or innovative, while the dominant, incomprehensible gutturals might be a tough sell for some listeners.

Twenty-twenty-five has delivered diverse treats across the metalverse, including top-notch death metal releases of varied persuasions within the genre. Ash Eclipses Flesh is another not to be missed. What they lack in bells, whistles, techy flair or innovation, Terror Corpse more than compensate through their authentic and fresh spin on a vintage sound. A tightly performed, superbly produced, and invigorating slab of riffy old school death, armed with gnarled deathgrind and grisly brutal death ammunition, Ash Eclipses Flesh is a surefire corker and end-of-year list disruptor.

  10. Retching – Charming the Decomposed Review

    By Saunders

Part of the appeal of my long-standing relationship with death metal is the sheer diversity of the genre and its many sub-genres. There is something for all moods. So while stylistic preferences remain, most forms of death I can happily jam with, whether it be old school primitive clubbings, tech shredding, gnarled dissonance, emotive melodeath, brutal slam, or successful forays of doom, blackened and prog influences into deathly frameworks. But in the end, it’s the genre’s simplified, core values and slimy, grimy atmospheres that warm the heart. Throwing their hats in the old school death revivalist ring, relative newcomers Retching explode out the rusty graveyard gates with a no-nonsense, pretension-free blast of old school death. Seeking to add their own spin and identity to separate themselves from the horde of old school aficionados, while leaving reinvention for other folks, the Rhode Island duo unleash debut, Charming the Decomposed. Let us explore whether Retching possess the songwriting smarts and tools of destruction to make an impact outside of aping the genre’s proud past.

Thirty-two minutes is all it takes for Retching to deliver eight slashing cuts of riff-driven, blasty, gore-soaked death, American-style. Charming the Decomposed is an old school brawler with a mean streak, chock to breaking point with parasitic grooves, gut-busting riffs, brutal percussive assaults, and appropriately grisly, brutal vocal eruptions. All that said, Charming the Decomposed doesn’t take itself too seriously, loading the rabid, bloodied collection with a variety of part goofy, part unsettling samples, adding to the album atmosphere, even if they are a little overdone at times (see bludgeoning opener “Moonlight Perversions/Gorging on Ecstasy”). Otherwise, efficient, high-energy cuts are the order of the day, drawing influence from the esteemed likes of early Exhumed, Mortician, Carcass and Cannibal Corpse.

“Shower Curtain Silhouette” builds from a rugged, grinding base, ratcheting up tension before exploding into speedy, punk-infused rampages, stomping verses, and skillfully fluctuating tempo shifts. The deceptive songwriting diversity poking through the muck and feral abuse adds a layer of intrigue to otherwise more traditional, blunt force beatings, amid a couple of less impactful tunes. Another of the album’s stronger examples, “Septic Entombment,” features a creative arrangement, allowing breathing space for the meaty, yet wickedly infectious riffs and bouncing grooves to ride shotgun with aggressive, blast-riddled surges. Retching operates effectively in high-speed savagery, yet the writing tends to appeal most when mixed with slower, malevolent tempos, lending a doomy, leaden weight to proceedings, such as the tormenting melodies and ominous vibes emanating from “Fetid Abattoir.”

Energy rarely drops, as brutality and raw-boned explosions of speed and blast-riddled mayhem ensue. Retching wisely integrate structural and tempo variety, coupled with razor-fine slivers of melody and raucous, crunchy riffs to stave off monotony and lend the album an infectiously headbangable streak. Along with the aforementioned tunes, this is further highlighted on the brooding, ominous swagger of ‘Vulgar Celluloid Trophy”. The anonymous duo of Latex (drums, vox) and Mondo (guitars) forge a powerhouse combo, perfectly suited to the lean, mean, and cutthroat nature of the album’s tight construction. Latex whips together a punchy, inventive performance behind the kit, proving adept at deploying slower, groovier rhythms and finesse to go with the rip-snorting blasts and thrashy tempos. His serviceable vocals get the job done, adding a gritty, guttural edge. Meanwhile, partner in crime Mondo serves up an unhealthy dose of meaty, genuinely catchy riffs, which, if maintained consistently across the album, may have elevated a solid experience into something more substantial. Still, there is some excellent axework and riffs to sink into.

Retching’s impressively no-nonsense debut won’t challenge the upper tier of death metal albums in 2025 or threaten many year-end lists. But what it does, it does well, with a no-fuss, belligerent charm that is easy to like. While there is little fat or unnecessary bloat to be found, the songwriting has room for improvement to live up to the quality of the album’s stronger cuts and create a more consistent, compelling listen. However, signs are bright and the potential promising for Retching to build something more formidable down the track.

  13. Entrails – Grip of Ancient Evil Review

    By Saunders

Rooted in the fertile graveyard turf of the Swedeath golden years, veterans Entrails occupy an interesting place in the revivalist old school Swedish death metal scene. Originally conceived in 1990 by sole original member Jimmy Lundqvist, the band lay dormant until Lundqvist resurrected the outfit with new bandmates in tow, unleashing a couple of long-gestating demos before eventually releasing their impressive debut Tales from the Morgue in 2010. Entrails started out strongly, backing up the debut with gnarled, grisly platters of throwback Swedeath goodness, courtesy of 2011’s The Tomb Awaits, and 2013’s Raging Death. A solid, if unremarkable holding pattern largely ensued during the intervening years, the band not dropping the ball, yet failing to rise to the loftier standards of their early work. Still, when done well, old school death of the Swedish variety is like metal comfort food, and these dudes are consistently reliable. Can eighth opus Grip of Ancient Evil shake off the rust and reinvigorate Entrails to their potent glory days?

Listeners should not expect any drastic reinvention or innovation from these meat & taters brawlers. Influences are tattered and worn, as Grip of Ancient Evil sets the buzzsawing tone early in the piece, essentially a modern continuation of the classic Swedeath sound inspired by scene legends, Grave, Dismember and Entombed. Entrails’ steadfast dedication to their old timey craft has served them well; however, the dreaded Law of Diminishing Returns threatens to derail their reliable track record deep into their career. After an unnecessary though obligatory scene-setting opener, “Untreatable Decay” kicks the album in proper. The song forms the blueprint of the Entrails sound, unleashing thunderous rhythms, tasty leads, and HM-2 armored riffage to bludgeoning effect.

Chunky tones are on point, riffs suitably beefy, while the mix of tempo shifts, thumping grooves, and requisite spooky, horror-themed atmospheres cast a familiar shadow across the album. New vocalist Julian Bellenox (Nazghor, Morphetik) fits the part, providing an authoritatively punchy rhythmic point of difference. His hoarse, throaty growls lend a brutal edge and thickness to the already meaty material. Otherwise, it is largely business as usual in the Entrails camp. The album’s darker, nastier vibes, infectious hooks, and more direct, punchy attack breathe welcome life into this long-standing, rotting entity. Grip of Ancient Evil features many of the expected traits of the classic Swedeath style; however, Entrails sound reinvigorated and urgent. Aptly titled “Skin ’em All” rips you a new one, relentlessly tearing through thrashy soundscapes, headbangable grooves, and gruesome, Bloodbath-esque terrain. Other noteworthy prime cuts include the doom-laden, dynamic shifts and anthemic hooks of “Hunt in the Shadows,” rugged, leaden riffage and punishing grooves on “Fed to the Dead,” and thrashing, urgent pummel of “Wings of Death.”

Not everything is safe and predictable. Barnstorming closer “Consumed by Insects” shifts surprisingly into a brief acoustic break, an odd though refreshing twist. Meanwhile, guest vocalist Per “Hellbutcher” Gustavsson (Friends of Hell, Nifelheim) lends a feral, blackened edge to the brooding “Inner Demon.” Performances are dependably solid from a line-up that remains fairly steady amongst the regular line-up upheavals plaguing the band. Bellenox is a refreshing addition, while band leader Lundqvist remains the pivotal focal point and songwriting chief, unleashing an extra beefy collection of buzzsaw riffs and some genuinely catchy death metal anthems. Packing a hefty wallop, the boisterous rhythms of Arvid Borg (drums) and Benjamin Andersson (bass) form a sturdy rhythmic backbone, coupled with a dynamic, crisp, though appropriately burly production, A solidly engaging listen, featuring a handful of cut above tunes, Grip of Ancient Evil remains a relatively safe listen, a step up from the previous album, but unable to match the band’s superior early work. Meanwhile, extra grime to dirty up their rather sanitary sound profile may have created a rustier edge and grittier sound.

Locking tightly into the confines of their established sound, Entrails refuse to budge from their old school ethos. While a predictability permeates each release, Grip of Ancient Evil features a little more pep and energy, ravenous hooks, and chunky, brutal edge to please longtime listeners and potentially reel in some new devotees. Nothing mind-blowing here, but Entrails reaffirm their status as an endearing, reliable force in the nostalgic old school Swedeath market, with an addictive, bone-crushing collection of grisly gems.
