"Ukraine in recent days has launched counterattacks to push Russian forces back from the northern edge of Pokrovsk and keep a road there open to Myrnohrad.
Last weekend, for example, special forces troops under the command of Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) chief Kyrylo Budanov launched an audacious heliborne operation into territory that Russian forces claimed they already controlled. The GUR later uploaded video of the assault.
But the momentum in Pokrovsk appears to be with the attacking Russian forces. The city's fall would be a blow to Ukrainian morale and would complicate its broader defense of the Donbas region.
There are also concerns in Ukraine that its loss could open a route for a Russian offensive towards the cities of Kostyantynivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk -- the largest Donbas cities still controlled by Kyiv.

Though urban centers 'usually make decent tactical defensive positions,' Paroinen added, 'when you are already surrounded from three sides and your lines of communications have been cut off or are being disrupted as badly as they are right now over there, then those positions become liabilities, and they are just basically draining Ukrainian resources.'
A Ukrainian withdrawal may even improve Kyiv's prospects, Paroinen said, assuming that new defenses have been prepared to the city's west. If those new fortifications are not ready, 'then they have a bigger problem than failing to hold Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad,' he said.
The Institute for the Study of War think tank suggested that Russia is unlikely to have the reserves to exploit Pokrovsk's potential fall to advance rapidly to seize more of the Donbas region. Rather, Moscow's mauled forces would likely have to continue their slow and costly forward grind, the ISW said."

Entrails – Grip of Ancient Evil Review

Rooted in the fertile graveyard turf of the Swedeath golden years, veterans Entrails occupy an interesting place in the revivalist old school Swedish death metal scene. Originally conceived in 1990 by sole original member Jimmy Lundqvist, the band lay dormant until Lundqvist resurrected the outfit with new bandmates in tow, unleashing a couple of long-gestating demos before eventually releasing their impressive debut Tales from the Morgue in 2010. Entrails started out strongly, backing up the debut with gnarled, grisly platters of throwback Swedeath goodness, courtesy of 2011’s The Tomb Awaits, and 2013’s Raging Death. A solid, if unremarkable holding pattern largely ensued during the intervening years, the band not dropping the ball, yet failing to rise to the loftier standards of their early work. Still, when done well, old school death of the Swedish variety is like metal comfort food, and these dudes are consistently reliable. Can eighth opus Grip of Ancient Evil shake off the rust and reinvigorate Entrails to their potent glory days?
Listeners should not expect any drastic reinvention or innovation from these meat & taters brawlers. Influences are tattered and worn, as Grip of Ancient Evil sets the buzzsawing tone early in the piece, essentially a modern continuation of the classic Swedeath sound inspired by scene legends, Grave, Dismember and Entombed. Entrails’ steadfast dedication to their old timey craft has served them well; however, the dreaded Law of Diminishing Returns threatens to derail their reliable track record deep into their career. After an unnecessary though obligatory scene-setting opener, “Untreatable Decay” kicks the album in proper. The song forms the blueprint of the Entrails sound, unleashing thunderous rhythms, tasty leads, and HM-2 armored riffage to bludgeoning effect.
Chunky tones are on point, riffs suitably beefy, while the mix of tempo shifts, thumping grooves, and requisite spooky, horror-themed atmospheres cast a familiar shadow across the album. New vocalist Julian Bellenox (Nazghor, Morphetik) fits the part, providing an authoritatively punchy rhythmic point of difference. His hoarse, throaty growls lend a brutal edge and thickness to the already meaty material. Otherwise, it is largely business as usual in the Entrails camp. The album’s darker, nastier vibes, infectious hooks, and more direct, punchy attack breathe welcome life into this long-standing, rotting entity. Grip of Ancient Evil features many of the expected traits of the classic Swedeath style; however, Entrails sound reinvigorated and urgent. Aptly titled “Skin ’em All” rips you a new one, relentlessly tearing through thrashy soundscapes, headbangable grooves, and gruesome, Bloodbath-esque terrain. Other noteworthy prime cuts include the doom-laden, dynamic shifts and anthemic hooks of “Hunt in the Shadows,” rugged, leaden riffage and punishing grooves on “Fed to the Dead,” and thrashing, urgent pummel of “Wings of Death.”
Not everything is safe and predictable. Barnstorming closer “Consumed by Insects” shifts surprisingly into a brief acoustic break, an odd though refreshing twist. Meanwhile, guest vocalist Per “Hellbutcher” Gustavsson (Friends of Hell, Nifelheim) lends a feral, blackened edge to the brooding “Inner Demon.” Performances are dependably solid from a line-up that remains fairly steady amongst the regular line-up upheavals plaguing the band. Bellenox is a refreshing addition, while band leader Lundqvist remains the pivotal focal point and songwriting chief, unleashing an extra beefy collection of buzzsaw riffs and some genuinely catchy death metal anthems. Packing a hefty wallop, the boisterous rhythms of Arvid Borg (drums) and Benjamin Andersson (bass) form a sturdy rhythmic backbone, coupled with a dynamic, crisp, though appropriately burly production, A solidly engaging listen, featuring a handful of cut above tunes, Grip of Ancient Evil remains a relatively safe listen, a step up from the previous album, but unable to match the band’s superior early work. Meanwhile, extra grime to dirty up their rather sanitary sound profile may have created a rustier edge and grittier sound.
Locking tightly into the confines of their established sound, Entrails refuse to budge from their old school ethos. While a predictability permeates each release, Grip of Ancient Evil features a little more pep and energy, ravenous hooks, and chunky, brutal edge to please longtime listeners and potentially reel in some new devotees. Nothing mind-blowing here, but Entrails reaffirm their status as an endearing, reliable force in the nostalgic old school Swedeath market, with an addictive, bone-crushing collection of grisly gems.

Puteraeon – Mountains of Madness Review

As embedded into the fabric of horror as the works of H.P. Lovecraft are, so too are the myriad contributions of one Dan “The Man” Swanö enmeshed into the Swedish death metal scene. These two titans’ paths cross on Mountains of Madness, the fifth long-player from Sweden’s Puteraeon, who’ve tread the left-hand path of genre forbears like Grave, Entombed, and Dismember, peddling Lovecraftian Swedeath since 2008. After debuting in 2011 with The Esoteric Order and through 2020s The Cthulhian Pulse: Call from the Dead City, Puteraeon has four albums of fair to middling Swedish death under its belt. With Mountains of Madness, its second album helmed by Swanö for Emanzipation Productions, Puteraeon has fully embraced the Cthulhu Mythos, penning an ode to one of Lovecraft’s most popular novellas. Some pressure comes with Dan Swanö’s quote, ‘I dare say this one will go down in the history books as one of the best Swedeath releases ever,’ yet these are the stakes for Mountains of Madness. All that’s left to hear is if Puteraeon has what it takes to honor one of horror’s most influential writers while leaving a lasting mark on a scene rich in death metal history.
Puteraeon takes an Azathothian leap forward with Mountains of Madness while still keeping the HM-2 pedal firmly to the metal. Jonas Lindblood and Rune Foss put a big fat checkmark in the Swedeath box, leveling tons of fat riffs blazoned in those tried-and-true buzzsaw tones while dotting this frigid landscape, too, with harmoniously melodic leads and solo work that sticks long after the last note has floated into the frosty ether (“The Nameless City”). Even as Puteraeon weaves in some icy black melodicism that casts Old Man’s Child shadows (“I Am the Darkness”), no one will mistake Mountains of Madness for anything but quality Swedish death. And while the Unleashed speed of the riffs on “Remnants” or the Bloodbathic cadence and horrific Sabbathian trills of “The Rise of the Shoggoths” may warrant comparison, Mountains of Madness solidifies Puteraeon in a sound all its own, one that is more engaging and mature, filled with cinematic majesty and excellent performances.
Shifting its aesthetic, Puteraeon has traded the thorny logo and cartoonish covers for a tasteful font and excellent artwork by Ola Larsson, both dripping with a seriousness that evokes a strong movie poster vibe. Similarly, the songwriting on Mountains of Madness draws listeners further into its harrowingly cinematic, Lovecraftian experience with an ever-flowing stream of atmospheric nuance. Whether it’s the creepy leads and monstrous chords that bring to life the “Horror of the Antarctic Plateau” or the delicate, trepidatious piano and swirling screams of “Gods of Unhallowed Space,” Mountains of Madness casts earthly realms aside, establishing Puteraeon‘s dominance and reminding us just how inconsequential we humans are. Within the span of its forty-minute runtime, and with nary a moment wasted, Puteraeon has opened a portal into a nether world, expertly manifesting Lovecraft’s vision through music that demands attention.
As Puteraeon‘s riffs and melodic leads swirl and swarm like a Cthulhian mist, Daniel Vandija’s bass and Anders Malmström’s devastating drums lurk beneath like hulking, tentacled behemoths. Swanö found the perfect amount of space in the mix to showcase this rhythm section’s talents. Vandija shines brightest with Steve Harris-like flair throughout Mountains of Madness. Whether coalescing with the harmonic leads in “The Land of Cold Eternal Winter” to create a crushing heaviness or laying the soft-handed foundation for the atmospheric interlude of “The Nameless City,” his contributions make both tracks absolute album highlights. Puteraeon‘s last cap feather belongs to Lindblood and his bestial throat work. In tandem with Foss’s backing vocals, whether guttural (“The Rise of the Shoggoths”) or clean (“The Nameless City,” “Watchers at the Abyss”), the two men deliver a devastatingly brutal performance that leans toward the inhuman. I found almost nothing of importance to critique other than perhaps a slight drop-off in the songwriting in the album’s second half, but that’s a near-inconsequential quibble.
Mountains of Madness succeeds as a cinematically dramatic, black-tinged slice of Swedish death metal, serving as Puteraeon‘s finest moment. Maintaining a consistent lineup since forming, Puteraeon has matured into a merciless machine intent on destroying your ears with Swedeathly intent. Whether or not it will stand as one of the genre’s best releases ever, only time will tell, but Mountains of Madness has withstood this Tyme‘s test and is thereby worthy of yours.

I just listened to _Survival of the Sickest_ by Bloodbath—released in 2022. Hands down Bloodbath has become one of my all-time favorite death metal bands. They stay true to old school Swedish death metal and keep it relevant today. I'm also floored that Barney Greenway of Napalm Death did guest vocals on one of the tracks. It was indeed a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend it if you like this genre.
