  2. While some people are #ockham listed best i can manage is #TheConversation. Strange to write an article on an #Antarctic expedition that was a decade ago - but we only managed to retrieve the full data set 3 years ago when a later expedition managed to get to the instruments and we discovered more data had been collected after the satellite link had broken.

  3. Cutting Down Ockham's Razor via OpenMind Magazine [Shared]

We hear all the time that the simplest explanations are usually the right ones. This truth-testing idea—known as Ockham’s razor, after the English medieval philosopher William of Ockham—has been embraced by no less authorities than Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Today scientists invoke Ockham’s razor on topics ranging from Covid’s origins to cosmic dark matter, while folks debating a subject on social media regularly invoke it as their final arbiter. After all, why complicate something more than you need to? Isn’t it better to shave ideas down to their essential truths?

  6. This print “Occam’s Razor” is about the Law of Economy or Parsimony postulated by Scholastic philosopher William of Ockham (1287–1347), “pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate” or entities should not be needlessly multiplied. More simply this law, or really, rule of thumb is that the simplest explanation is usually right. The print shows Ockham himself, inspired by an image of him from a 🧵 1/n

  8. The Ockham Awards 2023: recognising the best in skepticism, and the worst in pseudoscience

Since QED 2012 The Skeptic magazine has presented their annual Ockham Awards, as part of our Saturday night’s entertainment. The Ockhams celebrate the best of UK skepticism over the last twelve months, as well as highlighting the most troublesome or prominent pseudoscientists.

  9. @ameredith Really?! I am absolutely OBSESSED with Wittgenstein, especially his account of mathematics. I’m writing a paper about him and #Ockham now. So much fun!

I will probably lose a lot of followers when things slow down and everyone realizes just how nerdy I am. 😂 (But that’s okay. I’m just so grateful to be here & not the bird place.)

  10. #Science Has No Use For #Ockham's Razor

Post from 2007, surprises me because most theories in science are based on ockham because if your theory is good enough that no one can contradict it then it will be accepted until someone debunks it.
