Language is overrated. In this Substack piece, I scrutinise language and the fact that much of language is extraneous. As for spoken language, many utterances are not strictly necessary, though they are functional.

I shake hands with #Austin, #Derrida, #Searle, #Wittgenstein, #Nietzsche, and #Barthes on this journey – even a bout with #Pinker.

Update to ‘An Annotated Mathematician’s Apology’, with a new section on Wittgenstein’s response: https://archive.org/details/hardy_annotated (accessible #TaggedPDF, #OpenAccess)
My thanks go to Wolfgang Kienzler, professor at Friedrich Schiller Universität in Jena, who pointed me to Wittgenstein’s remarks, sent me notes about relevant sources, and critiqued my draft for the new section.

#Wittgenstein shows up, too:
1) Apparently he doodled faces while teaching and writing & occasionally used them in class. The article gives a nice example where Wittgenstein uses a doodle to parse how we detach faces from facial expressions -- "a face 'has' a particular expression" -- at least in theory.
2) His comment on the #MonaLisa: "When we speak of the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa, that may well mean that we ask ourselves: In what situation, in what story, might one smile like that?"

> #Wittgenstein ‘s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. The stuff is super trickyRight. So maybe someone has written an interpretation for mere mortals. I should check.
