  1. Lola Veronica is a musician from Ōtautahi / Dunedin and she's really good! This gig is a fundraiser for her first album - sadly for me, I have a clashing meeting and can't go to this gig, but if you like live music and lyrics that mean something, please go along!

    When: Wednesday 29 April, 7.30pm (doors open 7pm)
    Where: Undercurrent, 118 Tory St
    Cost: $15
    Who: "With a life immersed in vast seascapes and dramatically shifting weather, Lola Veronica grew up acutely aware of the climate crisis, and the place of humanity in our natural world, both borderless and fragile."

  2. FYI fellow HamilTronians;

    * [DateMonthYear](datemonthyear.bandcamp.com/alb) are playing at Nivara Lounge tonight.

    * Also in live music, a rare sighting of the Mesoverse putting some on, with the [Crunch Kirikiriroa Hardcore](undertheradar.co.nz/gig/101690) show.

  3. Relive raw NZ pop-punk energy! Goodnight Nurse tearing into "Milkshake" live at Onewa Domain (2008). Potato-cam + distant mic = lo-fi charm, but the energy's intact — perfect for late-night singalongs. #LiveMusic #GoodnightNurse #Milkshake #NZMusic #Bootleg #IndieRock #English

  4. Just went a bit crazy for the last few hours, and started mapping out the Aotearoa music infrastructure;

    Obviously I’m just getting started here. This is just my crack at it, mostly off the top of my head, and adding stuff I found or was reminded on while web searching. Lots more entries, links, and details to be added. Contributions welcome!

  9. Here's #Minuit, NZ's fantastic drum and base and weird band, with one of their early hits, "Except You". Vocalist Ruth Carr started out singing and playing drums, while they shifted to electronic drums for much of Minuit's music.

    I read on Wikipedia that this strange carnival themed video was made by their flatmate ALyx Duncan.

  10. The Chills [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/c/the]
    The Chills, led by Martin Phillips, were a seminal New Zealand band central to the Dunedin Sound. Formed in 1980. Despite struggles, including the death of drummer Martyn Bull and Phillips' drug dependency and health issues, they continued producing acclaimed albums until Phillips' unexpected passing in 2024.

  11. TV Eye [thebigcity.co.nz/resources/rec]
    TV Eye was a collective rather than a label, with releases comprised of group, duo and solo material from the musicians that made up the South Island recording collective The Picnic Boys, plus a couple of hard-to-find compilations that include the same groups and a handful of others who may or may not feature key members Kevin Smith, Steve Watson, Pat Faigan, and Tim McCleod.

  12. The Orange [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/o/the]
    The Orange was a Dunedin trio formed by Andrew Brough in 1984. They recorded an EP for Flying Nun Records filled with melodic, 1960's influenced pop before Brough

  13. The Picnic Boys [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/p/the]
    The Picnic Boys was a loose collective formed around the core trio of Kevin Smith, Patrick Faigan and Steve Watson (who later became Say Yes to Apes). At Faigan's behest the various members recorded their own take on 'experimental' music to tape, which was later compiled into a handful of cassette releases on the groups TV Eye label in the early 1980s.

  14. Say Yes To Apes [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/s/say]
    Say Yes To Apes were a loose, noisy, often sloppy and usually creative Dunedin-then-Christchurch-based underground rock outfit formed by frontman Kevin Smith (several years before his acting career took off), drummer Pat Faigan (aka Duane Zarakov of Space Dust, King Loserand multi-instrumentalist Steve Watson, born out of the earlier Picnic Boys.

  15. Hyphen-Ears [thebigcity.co.nz/artists/h/hyp]
    Hyphen-Ears was an underground group formed by South Island-based duo Kevin Smith (aka Hyphen-Smythe) and Steve Watson (aka Legacy of Ears) as a sideline to their Dunedin-based group Say Yes to Apes - which itself was an outgrowth of the The Picnic Boys recording collective).

    The two Hyphen-Ears releases were some of the last by the TV Eye collective - vocalist Kevin Smith was soon channelling his creativity into acting...

  16. Don McGlashan brackets our covid experience so far.

    I last saw him at the Newtown fair, it was a sunny day in March 2019, the crowd was cautious and distant.

    Last night, two weeks after a bout of covid interrupted his tour, he played at Vogelmorn.

    Great concert, but by the early end the crowd really wanted to offer him a warm cup of lemon and ginger tea
