For some reason I find myself relentlessly humming Heavenly Pop Hit by The Chills;

This 1990 single probably won't mean much to anyone who's not a kiwi or indie music fan. But it's an anthem here, even though it kind of breezed past me at the time. It wasn't until half a decade later, when I discovered Male Monster From the Id, and the Soft Bomb album, that Martin Phillipps' quirky songwriting grabbed me.

And now this, the debut LP of a band involved in the 'Dunedin sound' movement, which I had literally never heard of until just now. I guess we have New Zealand to at least partially thank for indie rock?

I just heard the news about the death of Ōtepoti musician Martin Phillips, frontman of Flying Nun band The Chills since the 1960s. To mark his passing, here's a track called Sleeping Giants from the 1992 Chills album Soft Bomb;

I was 17 when I wound up in Invercargill as an exchange student in 94. I was promptly given Pink Flying Saucers Over the Southern Alps. That comp opens with Heavenly Pop Hit and I can't understate how much that song altered my taste in music, opening my previously very noisy brain to the possibilities of chiming guitars and melody and even up front vocals. As much as I loved that song I loved Pink Frost even more. Here's a live version I taped showcasing Martin Phillips well.
