  1. For some reason I find myself relentlessly humming Heavenly Pop Hit by The Chills;

    This 1990 single probably won't mean much to anyone who's not a kiwi or indie music fan. But it's an anthem here, even though it kind of breezed past me at the time. It wasn't until half a decade later, when I discovered Male Monster From the Id, and the Soft Bomb album, that Martin Phillipps' quirky songwriting grabbed me.

  2. And now this, the debut LP of a band involved in the 'Dunedin sound' movement, which I had literally never heard of until just now. I guess we have New Zealand to at least partially thank for indie rock?

  4. Another inspiring story from the Daily Encourager occasional newsletter.

    "Painting the Chills

    Fingerprint drawing a portrait of The Chills’ lead singer Martin Phillipps in a noisy atrium during school holidays may not be the best idea.

    Particularly when the artist, Tom Fox, has autism spectrum disorder, meaning his senses can be easily overloaded and emotions intensified."

  5. Just a reaffirmation that this is a fine, fine swan song. We miss you Martin. 7. The new remastered version of “Brave Words” by #TheChills is great. I always loved the album but the original version lacked oomph. New version has more guitars and bass in the mix and a bit less reverb or something. #indiepop #music

  8. A little under 24 hours from now, the #MartinPhillipps memorial service will be streamed on YouTube live. Please consider watching if you can. In the US, it will be 7 pm Pacific, 10 pm Eastern #TheChills #music youtube.com/live/z6CEigP2q4Q?f

  9. How Martin Phillipps, the brilliantly bleak genius of indie, made the world a better place

    "With The Chills, the late Martin Phillipps specialised in happy, dark and joyous underdog anthems. So why couldn’t he catch a break?"

    Seriously good piece by the UK Telegraph for those interested

  10. #Listening to The Chills again brings back vivid memories of living in Ōtepoti, not long after Soft Bomb dropped in 1992;

    "There's a part of me that's in disguise
    Though I fight to see it won't arise
    I'd avoid your eyes, denying
    Something dark and primal surviving

    I have another side i try to hide
    It cannot escape because if it tries
    There are defences raised around it
    For i chose to keep it surrounded"

  12. My cartoon in today's thepost.co.nz/nz-news/35035931

    The passing of Martin Phillipps, front man of The Chills, over the weekend has shocked and saddened the music industry and community. This is my small tribute.

  13. Really, the words belong to others. But I found a couple, to go with this photograph of mine, of Martin Phillips and #TheChills on stage in Dunedin in 2002. The caption says more. #music instagram.com/p/C-AyZcavreH/

  14. "For it seems all cultures dream
    They have a giant who is sleeping
    Or a king who will return in times of need
    To fight for setting his people free

    They teach the kids which fads to follow
    So they're unaware tomorrow
    When another crippled culture
    Dies in the shadow 'neath the corporate vulture"

  15. I just heard the news about the death of Ōtepoti musician Martin Phillips, frontman of Flying Nun band The Chills since the 1960s. To mark his passing, here's a track called Sleeping Giants from the 1992 Chills album Soft Bomb;

    The lyrics of this song have never seemed more timely;

  16. I was 17 when I wound up in Invercargill as an exchange student in 94. I was promptly given Pink Flying Saucers Over the Southern Alps. That comp opens with Heavenly Pop Hit and I can't understate how much that song altered my taste in music, opening my previously very noisy brain to the possibilities of chiming guitars and melody and even up front vocals. As much as I loved that song I loved Pink Frost even more. Here's a live version I taped showcasing Martin Phillips well.
