  1. @PabloMartini Tony Blair as PM showed the blind optimism in IT that is typical of those who don’t understand it. He then threw £millions at the NHS IT project which delivered none of its declared objectives.
Nick Clegg & all the other senior employees of tech companies clearly had a vested interest.
So if Keir Starmer is taking advice on IT and AI from these guys I fear that we are heading for a monumental waste of money. #TonyBlair #NickClegg #KeirStarmer #IT #AI #NHS

  2. Hostility to the techno-determinism as intellectual alibi for political and social harms

This aggressive interview with an incredibly defensive Nick Clegg was fascinating as an instance of contemporary tech politics. I was particularly struck by how he explicitly invokes ‘techno-determinism’ to dismiss claims about social platforms generating politics and social harms:

    https://youtu.be/KAYM1arUzXY?si=RlrfpreRLVNwSFPh&t=1563

He argues it’s “patronising” to claim that platforms have a significant influence because “people have agency”. There’s an obvious straw man here, in which claims about platform power are construed as people being cognitively hijacked by whatever they find in their feeds*, gets used to dismiss any claim about platform power.

*I do think some people basically believe this. It’s a stupid and dangerous position which we need to oppose.

  7. "#NickClegg became Britain’s deputy prime minister in 2010 when he led the center-left Liberal Democrats, before eventually falling from power 5 years later and landing in California in 2018. He was an outsider, brought in to lead Meta owner’s policy efforts; until his departure this January, he performed the herculean task of publicly defending the scandal-plagued company. Now, Clegg is out — replaced by a deputy with closer ties to Trump — and has written a book based partially on his experience as a top Mark Zuckerberg lieutenant."

  8. #NickClegg, former Deputy Prime Minister and Meta executive, discusses his views on #socialmedia, #politics, and #SiliconValley culture. He believes social media empowers people but acknowledges its challenges. Clegg criticises the “#techbro” culture for its #machismo and #selfpity, contrasting it with his upbringing in a privileged but grounded family. theguardian.com/politics/2025/ #tech #media #news

    Interesting, and not altogether surprising.

Charles Kennedy was a Liberal, so his politics differed from mine. Yet I always found him a likeable figure, and he rightly warned his party against going into coalition with the Conservatives, advice which his slick successor Nick Clegg unwisely did not heed.

As a consequence of the Clegg led Liberal support for the Conservatives, Cameron and Osborne were able to push through the austerity measures which have done so much lasting damage to the UK.

In addition, the Conservatives outfoxed their partners on the key issue of electoral reform, so the Liberals effectively got nothing in return for their support of Cameron.

In Kennedy's final election campaign, the SNP distributed this particularly nasty campaign material mocking his alcoholism.
