  1. CW: UK Politics

Glad to see the government have recognised just how serious the problem of youth unemployment is.

Now, what are they going to do about it?

Maybe they could start by reversing their previous increases in the taxes on employing people?

  6. "UK unemployment hits highest rate for nearly five years"

Whoever could have predicted that unemployment might rise after the government increased taxes on job creation?

The high unemployment rate in the 16-24 age group is particularly concerning.

  8. Lots in the UK media recently about the NI tax rises being the cause of many industries woes... Without mentioning other cost increases, changes in lifestyle (people are drinking less!) or that profitability is amazingly less affected...

The hospitality report referred to here doesn't mention that the rate of pub closures is actually declining, the industry as a whole is seeing 10% growth, and areas like catering are growing

  12. Holy shit... I didn't even know this was a thing and the govt (tory scum) covered it up, still won't say what the problem is, how many are affected... there's people who are missing a couple of years.

Turns out... I'm missing 8yrs myself.

From 2010 to 2017, I'd given up work to help care for my late father.

I was on benefits during that time partly as a carer and partly due to my own health issues.

For that entire time... I've been entitled to a weekly credit towards my national insurance contributions that you pay to be entitled to your state pension when you retire.

I was prompted to look into my NI record after I was told about a deadline this April for topping up any shortfalls from the years 2006-2016 in your record.

Up to 2009, I have all full years aside from 90-91 and 93-94 when I was still starting out in life and looking for a career that interested me. Not really an issue as more than 30yrs. It's 2yrs out of the approx 35yrs required. Not a problem when you have a working life of around 50yrs.

But I wanted to retire early, I don't want to work until I'm 67... and because of this, I'd have too.

So now I need to get working and investigating how I can get this record corrected.

That missing 8yrs, is enough to get me over the finish line so that I could retire in my 50's, some 10yrs early.

  13. Just a quick reminder/observation that; in the #UK there is no #NationalInsurance Employers contribution for #apprentices aged 25 or under who earn less that £50k

So, if you use #apprenticeships as part of your #skills portfolio, either by recruiting fresh #talent or #upskilling some of your existing staff, you could be saving 15% (from April '25) on your payroll costs, for the duration of their programme.

And increasing employers' National Insurance was a really bad move.

Not only did it break a really clear manifesto commitment, it's also a tax on job creation.

Why on earth would we want to disincentivise job creation if we want to grow the economy?

"Reeves signals hike in National Insurance for firms"

That would be quite a speedy broken manifesto promise if they go through with it.

Contrary to how they are doubtless going to spin it now, the manifesto used the precise wording "we will not increase National Insurance". It did not say "we will not increase employees' National Insurance".

Also, taxing job creation is really dumb.

  23. The responsible thing to do would be to reverse Hunt’s most recent cut to #NationalInsurance, and not to cut investment, but that would be politically unacceptable to #Labour which has already ruled out raising NI.

  25. Today I got the letter telling me that I no longer needed to make voluntary #NationalInsurance contributions as I am 'fully-paid up'. Letter is dated 4th May: 1 day after the previous post.

This must catch people out: once paid the NI is not recoverable.

  27. #NationalInsurance cut to kick in but more pay #tax - BBC News -

Combining the impact of the thresholds freezes and the NI cuts, independent think tank the #InstituteForFiscalStudies (#IFS) estimates that for every £1 given back to workers (including the self-employed) this year by the NI cuts, £1.30 will have been taken away due to the threshold changes between 2021 and 2024, with this rising to £1.90 in 2027.
