  1. Another article here about govt plans to get more #apprentices (which doesn't seem like a large number) - and mentioning many car aftermarket places are SMEs who don't have the resources to take on apprentices to start with (there's also a lot of prejudice from older business owners who complain that college graduates "aren't good enough") and don't want to invest in their development and training

  2. This isn't a surprise - #automotive body #repair is physically demanding work with harsh working conditions, folk aren't going to want to carry on under constant time/budget pressures well into middle age, and it seems colleges are likely not training students in specialist #paintrepair as it requires most costs and expenses than general dismantling / prep of vehicles, and #bodyshops are often too lean to take on #apprentices (all the vacancies I see are wanting experienced techs)

  3. more about the initiative here - they are genuinely putting effort into making things better for #mechanic #apprentices - but the issue is whether #garages are hiring them in the first place (as well as attracting young people to study #automotiive courses at college)

    catmag.co.uk/features/career-f

  4. This is a good initiative - Laser make decent #tools - I didn't even realise they had been around 50 years!

In UK #apprentices are expected to swallow the cost of buying their own tools, which is partly why there is a shortage of #mechanics in the whole country (the toolkit is worth about £500)

  5. Working in the #trades has never been *that* "uncool" amongst young people - even when I was a teen, and its not surprising these careers may seem more appealing as University fees rise, and remaining entry level office jobs that haven't been #outsourced disappear due to #AI .

what the article doesn't mention is the poor pay for #apprentices, potential toxic work environments and precarity of work when starting out - at least the tools from #Draper targeted at new starters seem both affordable and decent quality

  6. It's my 1 year anniversary at work. I have survived my first year as an educator! Everyone who told me the first year would be tough wasn't wrong! In fact, they downplayed just how tough it is. But I'm still here, and still enjoying it when it's not immensely stressful. #Teaching #FurtherEducation #Apprenticeships #Apprentices

  7. The long awaited follow-up to my insightful and incredibly well written blog about trying to become a teacher is up!

Disclaimer: may not be insightful or well written, but it is up.

  8. So, I'm finding that teaching sometimes feels like a long uphill trek, with little to no pay-off along the way. Might just be me, might just be what I'm teaching. But I'm someone that *needs* some payoff. Safe to say this is one of my least favourite bits of this job. However, I visited some of my apprentices at work last week, and they've only gone and implemented a concept I taught them about, and it's working and they're happy with it, and their manager is happy with it. 9. It's National Apprenticeship Week #NAW2026 (as if you didn't already know!)

As part of our celebrations we've put a page together with some amazing #CaseStudies from #apprentices and #employers, alongside our new 'Growing Together' #impact report (which features a picture on the cover of yours truly seemingly explaining what I'd like to do to incalcitrant colleagues ;-))

Take a look, there's some lovely affirming stuff in here: aru.ac.uk/study/degree-apprent

  10. Panels on display for judging in the 1906 signwriting apprentices competition in England. These competitions offered medals in various categories, and here the task was to layout and letter identical content ahead of a panel of experts awarding points and critiques.

The picture is among those I snapped in haste when I got a couple of hours at the British Library to look through hundreds of issues of the Journal of Decorative Art.

  11. I done a blog post, for the first time in forever. bone-idol.net/2025/09/17/teach. I'm teaching a small cohort of DevOps apprentices, and while planning their second year out (my first full year of teaching), I saw a glittering pathway to DevOps excellence unfurl before me. Or it's hilariously misguided pedagogical foolishness. Who knows?! But at least people can see me try this out in real time. Part 2 will be coming soon as things are already changing after just one session with the students. #Teaching #Education #FurtherEducation #Apprentices #DevOps #Blog

  12. #harvard confirms the massive impact of #AI #hiring
    #junior roles ↓23%
    #senior roles ↑14%
    (285,000 firms monitored)

Before AI: 1 senior + 3 juniors = full team
After AI: 1 senior + AI = same output

We are creating #experts without #apprentices mentors without students. The professional ladder is losing its lowest rungs.

  13. Wrapping up #FeelGoodFriday with a bit of local press for one of our #Apprentices.

Liam has smashed his way through the #CivilEngineering course, including a degree & his #ProfessionalReview for the #InstituteOfCivilEngineers securing himself a natty little 'IEng' post-nominal + setting himself well on the way to #Chartership.

His employer have been long term partners with #ARU over the last 5 years and I can't wait to see their younger cohorts achieving the same!

  18. What's particularly interesting is that whilst the sector is acutely aware of the potential impact of technology (ie #AI) on their futures, there is a strong recognition/expectation that #apprentices on our course will have firm foundation in the basic principals of effective #DoubleEntryBookkeeping as well as advanced knowledge of #TaxLaw and legislation so that they can add value to any work that technology might be assisting them with. This seems entirely sensible to me!

  19. Another minor career milestone today - 15 students undertook a small lab exercise I put together. Barring a couple of instances that didn't work as expected, it was reasonably successful. Some constructive feedback from students and colleague. I'm very much enjoying this teaching malarkey. #CareerChange #teaching #CyberSecurity #InfoSec #apprentices #GlosCol

  20. The current #juniorwages system means big businesses like #Coles #Maccas and #Woolies are taking $3.5 billion off young workers every year 😤 And it doesn't end there! Young workers under 18 don't earn #superannuation (unless they work full time) and our young #apprentices are still not earning enough to get by!

  21. I'm sitting in on the #BCS #NAW25 Local Digital Skills session, shaping up to be a really interesting session, the skills agenda is on the move again and #Apprenticeships and #apprentices need to be at heart of it:

  22. New episode! 💡

This one's all about #apprenticeships as a potential path into the #conservation profession: Liz has been an #apprentice, Jenny has hosted an #apprenticeship and Kloe is just plain keen.

We also chat with Jane Henderson about the potential pitfalls of the UK model, and to stone carvers Nina and Charlotte about how it works in their industry.

  23. Just a quick reminder/observation that; in the #UK there is no #NationalInsurance Employers contribution for #apprentices aged 25 or under who earn less that £50k

So, if you use #apprenticeships as part of your #skills portfolio, either by recruiting fresh #talent or #upskilling some of your existing staff, you could be saving 15% (from April '25) on your payroll costs, for the duration of their programme.

I've got a varied and growing suite of courses on offer:

  25. What's that you say? Employers don't pay #NationalInsurance on #apprentices aged under 25 in England?

  29. City of Magic An Underground Fantasy Enclave

Within the hidden underground city, wizards and their apprentices gather in its enchanted architecture, surrounded by the fanciful creations of dwarves and gnomes

  30. Just seen a #DfE post on the Birdsite with someone claiming 'it's clear there's a stigma around #apprenticeships' (and goes on to explain why they're actually a good thing)

I'm left wondering, 'if that is actually the case, how come there are already so many more people who want to train through an #apprenticeship than there are vacancies for #apprentices?'
