  3. History made: 🇵🇹 takes lead in effort to stop deep-sea mining

While countries like Spain and France have adopted parliamentary resolutions in opposition to deep-sea mining, #Portugal is - so far - the only European country to have translated these concerns into a binding law to adopt a deep-sea mining moratorium.

  6. "Government of #SouthGeorgia & the #SouthSandwichIslands announces plans to introduce significant enhancements to #MarineProtection in the #SouthernOcean.

The announcement of an additional 166,000km2 of ‘No Take Zones’, covering an area 8 times the size of Wales, will result in 449,000km2 of highly biodiverse marine #habitat being closed to all #fishing activity."

  7. Great to see Spacewhale's work on analyzing whale populations anywhere around the global ocean by combining high-resolution satellite data, AI and human experts.

Good news, expecting satellite images to arrive this year with 10-cm resolution (!). Not so good news, such images are in private hands and already very expensive.

  10. In Chile’s Valparaíso region, artisanal fishers have created grassroots marine reserves to protect marine biodiversity.

The areas are small, some of them just 15 hectares (37 acres) in size, but they provide a haven for marine creatures to grow and reproduce.

  11. Scientists say future deep-sea mining activities could impact cetaceans through noise pollution, which could interfere with their communication processes.

Most assessments of deep-sea mining impact have focused on species associated with the seabed rather than transitory megafauna that inhabit the proposed mining areas, scientists say.

  12. Paying fishers in Indonesia to not catch sharks and rays could be a cost-effective way of conserving these species, a new study suggests.

Interviews with fishers at two sites shows that payments of $71,408-$235,927 per year could protect up to 18,500 hammerheads and 2,140 wedgefish at those sites.

  13. Developers at Flinders University and the German biotech company one • five have created a seaweed-based coating designed to replace plastics used in fast food packaging.

Many food containers and wrappers contain harmful plastics derived from fossil fuels that do not biodegrade and break into tiny microplastics that pollute the environment and harm marine ecosystems.
