Am 17. Januar 2026 tritt das UN-Hochseeschutzabkommen (#BBNJ) nach über 20 Jahren Verhandlungen in Kraft. Laut RIFS-Forscher Ben Boteler schließt das Abkommen eine wichtige Regelungslücke, weist jedoch Schwächen auf, da konkrete Schutzziele, Zeitpläne und verbindliche Maßnahmen fehlen. Entscheidend sei daher die konsequente Anwendung durch die ratifizierenden Staaten.
