  1. Meet The Shrimp That Punches With The Force Of A .22 Caliber — A Biologist Explains

Armed with a spring-loaded club and a devastating ‘double whammy’ strike, this shrimp is one of evolution’s strangest…

  2. All week we are taking a look at armor throughout the animal world! Today: The mantis shrimp packs one of the most powerful punches in the animal kingdom. How does it survive the enormous force that it creates when it clickity-clacks? #science #biology #oceanlife #mantisshrimp #oceanography

  4. Today's #Weretober is a peacock mantis shrimp - neither a shrimp, mantid, or peacock - but they can punch faster than you can blink, so it's probably better to respect their space.

    Especially if they're were-crustacean sized.

  5. The seemingly indestructible fists of the #mantisshrimp can take a punch
When a team of researchers from Northwestern studied the dactyl clubs of one mantis shrimp species, they found that they have layered structures that selectively block sound waves, acting as protective gear against vibrations that could otherwise harm the shrimp. These types of structures, known as phononic mechanisms, filter out sound waves that could otherwise cause nerve and soft tissue trauma.

  6. One of my unadulterated joys of existence is knowing we live in a universe where an animal exists that is able to punch so hard underwater, they literally become anime characters.

When those bubbles implode, they release light and heat energy so extreme that, for a fraction of a second, the water immediately surrounding the punch zone becomes as hot as the Sun.

  7. #MantisShrimp clubs filter sound to mitigate damage phys.org/news/2025-02-mantis-s

Does the mantis shrimp pack a phononic shield? science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc

"Their fists, or dactyl clubs, are covered in layered patterns, which selectively filter out sound. By blocking specific vibrations, the patterns act like a shield against self-generated shockwaves."

Within-host adaptive speciation of commensal #YoyoClams leads to ecological exclusion, not co-existence peerj.com/articles/17753/

6 of the 7 clam species, called yoyo #clams, attach to the shrimp's burrow walls with a long foot used to spring, yoyo-like, away from danger. The 7th species attaches directly to the mantis #shrimp's body and does not yoyo.

Recoil protects mantis shrimp from mighty blows: Kathryn Knight journals.biologists.com/jeb/ar

"competitors exchange bullet-like hits on each other’s armored tail plates during fights over shelters... In natural fights, we see mantis shrimp coil their tails in front of their bodies like a shield. I wanted to know how this behavioral use of the tail changed how they receive impacts."

  10. Rolling with the punches: How #MantisShrimp defend against high-speed strikes phys.org/news/2024-05-mantis-s

Behavior and morphology combine to influence energy dissipation in mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) journals.biologists.com/jeb/ar

"Their punches are famously fast, accelerating on par with a bullet. They use these strikes on prey, predators and competitors alike... Although their shells provide significant protection, their fighting stance absorb an additional 20% of the shock."

  12. CW: Mantis Shrimp & Vision (but not the Marvel Superdude Vision)

I just read a chapter about how vision works in animals. It featured this little monster who seems like a real nasty piece of work. They also see SPIRAL POLATIZED LIGHT, which pretty much breaks my little brain.
