  1. Hazardous Air Quality - “Everyone should stay indoors and reduce activity levels.”

The DC region has blown past the expected Code Red Air Quality warning for Friday, July 18. It was only red for about an hour before moving to the purple “Very Unhealthy” for everyone range. Now, it’s mostly in the maroon “Hazardous” for everyone range, which is the highest this scale goes up to. This is due to wildfire smoke from Canada. Good thing rain is in the forecast for tomorrow.

If you have an N95 mask, such as the 3M Aura (which fits about 80% of adults), it is a very good idea to wear it. Under these conditions, a half piece respirator is better if you have one and need to go outdoors. Most hardware stores should have them in stock if you don’t have one on hand.

Remember that smoke rises, so stay on the lowest floor while indoors if you can. The PM levels for my upstairs rooms are much higher than my lower ones. You can seal leaky windows with painters tape and plastic sheeting to create a “safe room” with HEPA air purifiers or make a CR Box (I reposted a tutorial yesterday).

  3. Tomorrow, I want to get some gaming in. I'm managing one short session a week at the moment due to pain and fatigue. It's ridiculous, because I need that escapism, but I can be in too much pain to get that escapism.

I also hope to get some #writing done over the weekend. If not actual prose, then finish one plan and consider my approach to a different tale.

Anyway, it's stupid-o-clock, so time to go and sleep.

And hope my office cools down tomorrow.

    G'night // #StaySafe // #BeKind

  5. Normally she rides creatures. Occasionally machines. But sometimes, just something that fits the location.

I'd best get meds and go sleep. But at least I was in-game for a bit today.

  7. I missed this shot when running the #FFXIV Make It Rain story on Ali, and I didn't /quite/ get the shot I wanted, but this is close enough for now.

I did the story, dealt with some storage issues, browsed the markets for a bit and now I'm very tired. So it's sleep time.

I haven't said it for a while, but the world is still as dangerous, so...

    #StaySafe and #BeKind.

I'll be back whenever I next have energy for socials. Take care.

  9. Memorial Day Weekend - "Remember"

This is a 3-day Holiday weekend in the U.S., meant to be a somber & mindful tribute to the many who served "God and Country" fighting for rights, #democracy, & "the American Way" - when it aspired towards compassion, law, rights, etc.

    #StephenColbert epitomized our freedom to speak #truth & brought many smiles amid #TrumpVirus #War & #pestilence.

  14. 🚨 Travel Warning from Namibia 🚨

I arrived in Windhoek full of excitement for my journey across Africa… and within hours, everything went wrong.

I was attacked and robbed by two armed men on this very stairway. The first went straight for my stomach with a knife, while the second came from behind, aiming for my ribs. In that split second, I had to fight for my life. I managed to throw the second attacker down the stairs, but the first escaped with my phone and all my data, including everything from Zanzibar to Namibia.

I survived, but it was terrifying. For two weeks, I waited in Windhoek for police action. Nothing happened. No phone. No SD card. Just disappointment and frustration. I eventually had to move on, shaken but alive.

Because of this experience, I cannot recommend Namibia for tourism anymore. The landscapes are stunning, but the risk of violent robbery is real.

I’m sharing this so others can stay alert, protect themselves, and make informed decisions. Travel can be amazing, but sometimes the worst can happen when you least expect it.

📹 The video below also shows the stairway for a short moment where it all happened.

  24. One piece of good news is that I've almost finished reconstructing my #FFXIV apartment. I moved servers to join a friend who had an Eternal Bonding recently.

But, in low light, remaking this was a late night worth having a couple of days ago.

(Alt text will be by @altbot because I need to do pyrography and stop posting about things.)

    But I wanted to share.

Remember to #StaySafe, and please, please... #BeKind. Someone's gotta, and it may as well be us.

  33. #ExtremeCold | #ReadyNH

"Exposure to cold can cause frostbite or hypothermia and become life-threatening. Infants and elderly prople are most susceptible. Freezing temperatures can cause severe damage to persons and property. Pipes may freeze and burst in homes that are poorly insulated or without heat. Here in the north, extreme cold means temperatures well below zero.

Conditions that May Result from Extreme Cold

    Hypothermia

    Symptoms:
    Shivering
    Slurred speech or mumbling
    Slow, shallow breathing
    Weak pulse
    Clumsiness or lack of coordinationg
    Drowsiness or very low energy
    Confusion or memory loss
    Loss of consciousness
Bright res, cold skin (in infants)
    First Aid Response
    Danger! Call 9-1-1
    Move out of the cold
    Remove wet clothing
    Cover the person with blankets
    Watch breathing
    Don't apply direct heat

    Frostbite

    Symptoms
Cold skin and a prickling feeling
    Numbness
Red, white, bluish-white or grayish-yellow skin
    Hard or waxy-looking skin
Clumsiness due to joint and muscle stiffness
Blistering after rewarming, in severe cases
    First Aid Response
Protect the affected area from further cold
    Don't walk on frostbitten feet
Seek medical help if you suspect deep frostbite or there is a loss of senstation to the affected area

Take Action Before a Cold Emergency:

Preparing for extreme cold can protect your family. There are steps you can take to make your home a better place to stay during periods of extreme cold.
    Dress for the Cold:
Wear layers of loose-fitting and lightweight clothing. Trapped air between the layers will insulate you.

If doing strenuous outdoor activities, avoid wearing cotton. Once wet, cotton takes a long time to dry and will sap your heat. Use synthetic fabrics that wick moisture from your skin and dry quickly.
Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.
Wear a hat, because 40%of your body heat can be lost from your head.
Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
Try to stay dry and out of the wind.

    When Traveling:
    Always prepare for the worst!

Your vehicle's winter survival kit should include warm clothes, boots, blankets, flashlight with extra batteries, candy bars or ceral bars.
Always carry a charged cell phone and tell others of your travel plans."
