While #Fedilab embeds its own translation feature (default option uses our #LibreTranslate service), you can also use #Lingva or #DeepL if you have an API key.
But we have to add the ability to let you use your instance as an option to translate messages. That will be done.

You might know that #Fedilab runs its own translation server (using #LibreTranslate).
But did you know that the app also supports two other translators?

- #Lingva: you won't need extra steps though you can change the default instance.

- #DeepL: A more powerful translator. It's a paid service but you can get 500,000 characters per month for free.

Für Android und iOS gibt es anscheinend noch keine entsprechenden Apps. Das dürfte aber nicht all zu aufwändig sein. Solange kann man dort die Browser-basierte Version nutzen.

Alternativ gibt es für Android "TranslateYou" oder "LentilTranslate", mit denen man Privatsphäre-schonende Online-Übersetzungsdienste wie #LibreTranslate oder #Lingva (ein datenschonender Aufsatz auf Google Translate) nutzen kann.

@jerry This seems like a good thread for my security concern.

I noticed a “translate” link on my post. Clicked it to see what would be used. Was disturbed to find that it’s #DeepL. This is a Tor-hostile #Cloudflare site that misleads people into thinking security is taken seriously. Which is the same thing that happends with libretranslate.com.

In principle it’d be most secure to run Argos Translate on the server. But that’s also a heavy process. If translation must be outsourced, I suggest translate.fedilab.app. It’s the same engine as #libretranslate, but without sharing translations with CF.

I wondered why Dialect throws error when I want to use it with Lingva Translate. Then I realized the main lingva.ml instance I was using is down (along with translate.igna.wtf) for some reason. Lucky thing it's decentralized so there are some working instances like translate.plausibility.cloud and lingva.garudalinux.org.

@davidoclubb @echanda I would not say #lingva.ml is a Google alternative since Google still sees all the queries. Google gets all the sensitive info so it can hardly be considered private. #TIL There are alternatives to Google Translate and DeepL that don't track you.

One option is Lingva, a proxy front-end to Google Translate. Another one is LibreTranslate. In contrast to Linva LibreTranslate doesn't rely on proprietary providers. Instead, its translation engine is powered by the open-source Argos Translate library.

You can self-host both, #Lingva and #LibraTranslate, or use one of the public instances.

@humanetech please do not mention it without mentioning https://libretranslate.com/ too which is FLOSS. #lingva is still better than using Google but keep in mind that Google still has rights on the generated translation and lingva does not circumvent that issue.
