Like it or not, #Mastodon successfully did an #EEE of the #Fediverse as far as API is concerned.

Non-Mastodon software with Mastodon API implemented can be connected to third-party services like brid.gy and fedica.com, to mention a few.

It is rare to see third-party services implement any support for non-Mastodon software using their respective API. #Fedica recently added #Pixelfed support; and a few other alt #frontends support either #Misskey or #Pleroma.

So… yeah, there's no doubt the “competition” is over as far as this particular usage is concerned. Mastodon won, got what it wants. Either implement it and allow your users to use other third-party software… or don't and wait for other developers to support your platform.

Not good, but we have to face the reality sooner rather than later, so we can move forward. Maybe make it part of #ActivityPub 2.0 and finally have a universal fediverse API that all can agree with and use.

Now that a bunch of code in GitHub repos isn't visible without running MicroSoft's proprietary JS, it would be great to have a software freedom-protecting front-end for browsing GH itself. Of course, Free Code projects moving off GH onto community-hosted code forges is the ideal solution, but in the meantime...

I've tried various #Mastodon #frontends and I've found #Trunks to be the best (so far).

1. Easiest way to check notifications.
2. Multi-column
3. Loads fast
4. Available in Android with the same layout and feature set.
* Also available in iOS (but I haven't tested this, I don't have an iOS unit).
5. For me, it sits between barebones and eye-candy UI

At least those are the ones I can remember quickly, or those that struck me as important.

Interesting thing I noticed about #polls in different #fediverse software and #frontends.

1st screenshot (#Mastodon): 53 people
2nd (Mastodon with #Trunks frontend): 83 votes
3rd (#Calckey): 83 votes

The poll was multi-select, so there were 53 people who voted with multiple answers which resulted into 83 votes. In Calckey, it is visible how many votes each item got.

Another thing I noticed, the percentage calculation of the Trunks frontend and vanilla Mastodon are different.

* CommonMark/Markdown received 41% and 43% respectively.
* Org-mod received 39% and 40% respectively.
And so on.

Initially I thought, maybe, there were people who voted but are not appearing in the poll. But, if the instance (and thus the post/poll) is not visible in another instance, users from there can not vote at all.

I think it has more to do with the display method and calculation: number of voters vs number of votes.

Just an interesting thing I noticed. It's not important, or maybe it is for other people who take online polls seriously.

There are Mastodon forks, and #frontends which provide that feature, or at least something similar, by default. Other #fediverse software have such a feature, most notably #Misskey and #Calckey (there are others, of course).

It's a very neat feature that mainline Mastodon doesn't have (and probably will never have).

What are the thoughts on posting links to alternative #frontends of services like YouTube, Twitter or Instagram, rather than to the respective main site, on the #Fediverse? (For example, linking piped.video or yewtu.be instead of youtu.be)
There are a number of possible arguments for (i.e. these services are generally more #privacy-respecting) and against (i.e. people should perform such URL substitutions themself, these links are more likely to die or randomly cease functioning) I can see

Can we build mobile, web & desktop #frontends with #Flutter and one codebase?

Google says Flutter is "the most popular cross-platform UI toolkit" with half a million apps. So…. does Flutter deliver?

For me "good old" means "without client-side #scripts". I came to my account at #Friendica, Ctrl+U, Ctrl+F <script -- 36 are found. 4 are found here at #Mastodon, 3 at my #Pleroma account.

Mastodon and Pleroma are not perfect, but they are highly customisable. I see many #frontends for them, al least one is without #JavaScript. I tried to find at #DuckDuckGo an alternate #frontend for Friendica, without success.
