Alligator Lake
This photograph, taken at Alligator Lake, captures a scene where green, reflective water fills the bottom half of the frame. In the center of the lake, a small turtle rests lazily on a log. Along the water’s edge, grasses and broad green elephant ears rise up from the shoreline, adding depth and texture to the composition. The upper half of the frame is filled with trees in varying shades of green and yellow, their canopies mirrored in the still surface below.
Near the center stands a small broadleaf tree—possibly a sweet gum—that draws the eye. It’s shaped like a classic Christmas tree, its triangular form adorned with boughs and clusters of yellow-green leaves that seem to float gently around the trunk. The base of the tree swells outward, in the familiar fluted shape seen in so many swamp trees of Louisiana.

This is a pond slider turtle (Trachemys scripta) resting on a log in the heart of Kisatchie Lake, nestled within Louisiana’s Kisatchie National Forest. The forest’s reflection in the lake adds a striking, almost dreamlike quality to the scene—something I find particularly captivating.

Coffee this morning is extra bitter; I’ve no idea why—I make it the same way every morning. I take my coffee black nowadays. In a previous decade, I would add a little sweetener, and the decade before that, sugar. How the world turns. Wasn’t that a soap opera? Or maybe it was As the World Turns. I never really paid attention to the soaps, even back in the day. Except for Dark Shadows—that one was different. It had vampires and witches, with all the drama and situations of real life. It ran during all of my high school years, so truthfully, I didn’t watch that often, but for a while one summer, I got caught up in the show. A long time ago.

Here’s a thought: for every inaction, there seems to be an equal and opposite inaction. Take my home security system, for example. For a couple of weeks now, it has been alerting me that a break-glass sensor needs a new battery. The replacement battery? I’ve had it all along. In fact, if I glance over my left shoulder, I can see it sitting on the corner of my other desk with three of its companions. My failure to spend five minutes replacing the battery has resulted in precisely nothing happening. Well, except for the security company calling to upsell me on new equipment—a generous offer I politely declined. What they didn’t offer, of course, was to replace the battery themselves. Maybe today’s the day I’ll finally take care of it.

I woke up at five this morning because the dogs were restless. It seems like all of my wakeups are dog related. Today, it was Ben wandering around the bedroom, which disturbed my wife, who then woke me up. I got up, opened the bedroom door, and laid back down, but then Charlie came in and bothered my wife again, which inevitably bothered me. So, I got up to let the dogs out—just in case you're wondering who. I intended to go back to sleep in my recliner but ended up making coffee instead and sat down to update my computer. This is life in the fast lane.

I think I'm going to just ramble this morning: Hmmm ... do I ever not ramble?
I replaced the battery in my lawn mower a couple of days ago. I had to leave the house to go find a new battery, which I found at the dealership. That is pretty much the extent of my social life, when I come face to face with other people because I need something from the store or elsewhere. That may sound sad, but I like the solitude. There was a time when I enjoyed getting out there, but those times are long gone. I stay as busy as I want, there are always things to do but only if I want to do them. I did invite somebody over yesterday ... a plumber.

In December of 1990, I briefly returned to California. I flew in from Germany where I'd been for seven years. I was met by my mother who informed me that she was moving to Wyoming, and I was driving. Interestingly, I no longer had a valid driver's license, so I had to scramble to get one of those. At the time the last license I possessed was issued by the state of Texas, I think. Anyway, we rented a U-Haul truck and a trailer to haul a car and headed east. We stopped in Reno, Nevada and then headed east again until we reached the outskirts of Laramie at a trailer just off of railroad tracks - interesting in December, loud and cold. I stayed a few days and flew out to Tennesse, where my soon to be wife was.

Have you ever sustained damage to your car by something falling off a truck in front of you? That is something that I've experienced a few times. Once from a pickup hauling firewood, once from a piece of an old washing machine, also from a pickup, and most recently from a tractor trailer rig that had a blow out and a piece of recapped tire hit my windshield. In fact, in all of these events the projectile hit my windshield. When this happens you, it is extra frustrating because you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Karma or fate? I believe we make our own karma or fate ... hmmm ... that thought doesn't help at all, does it?
Windshields are good.

Last night we had pizza, I've learned not to overdo it, most of the time anyway. We had a Domino's "Extravaganza" which has a bunch of toppings. Two slices and I was done. We let our guests select the source and they selected Domino's. Me, I think that Pizza Hut probably does a better job with the pizza, but it comes at a heftier price. Given the choice of Domino's or Pizza Hut, which do you think is the best?
