Alligator Lake
This photograph, taken at Alligator Lake, captures a scene where green, reflective water fills the bottom half of the frame. In the center of the lake, a small turtle rests lazily on a log. Along the water’s edge, grasses and broad green elephant ears rise up from the shoreline, adding depth and texture to the composition. The upper half of the frame is filled with trees in varying shades of green and yellow, their canopies mirrored in the still surface below.
Near the center stands a small broadleaf tree—possibly a sweet gum—that draws the eye. It’s shaped like a classic Christmas tree, its triangular form adorned with boughs and clusters of yellow-green leaves that seem to float gently around the trunk. The base of the tree swells outward, in the familiar fluted shape seen in so many swamp trees of Louisiana.

This is a pond slider turtle (Trachemys scripta) resting on a log in the heart of Kisatchie Lake, nestled within Louisiana’s Kisatchie National Forest. The forest’s reflection in the lake adds a striking, almost dreamlike quality to the scene—something I find particularly captivating.

Coffee this morning is extra bitter; I’ve no idea why—I make it the same way every morning. I take my coffee black nowadays. In a previous decade, I would add a little sweetener, and the decade before that, sugar. How the world turns. Wasn’t that a soap opera? Or maybe it was As the World Turns. I never really paid attention to the soaps, even back in the day. Except for Dark Shadows—that one was different. It had vampires and witches, with all the drama and situations of real life. It ran during all of my high school years, so truthfully, I didn’t watch that often, but for a while one summer, I got caught up in the show. A long time ago.

Here’s a thought: for every inaction, there seems to be an equal and opposite inaction. Take my home security system, for example. For a couple of weeks now, it has been alerting me that a break-glass sensor needs a new battery. The replacement battery? I’ve had it all along. In fact, if I glance over my left shoulder, I can see it sitting on the corner of my other desk with three of its companions. My failure to spend five minutes replacing the battery has resulted in precisely nothing happening. Well, except for the security company calling to upsell me on new equipment—a generous offer I politely declined. What they didn’t offer, of course, was to replace the battery themselves. Maybe today’s the day I’ll finally take care of it.
