Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Drum Suite, 1957 on Columbia

Art Blakey is joined here (at least on the A-side) by Cuban drummers Candido and Sabu, with Ray Bryant, Oscar Pettiford, and Charles Wright. On the B side, Jackie McLean, Spanky DeBrest, Sam Dockery, and Bill Hardman join as the Jazz Messengers.

My copy—via private sale—is a 1950s Columbia Hollywood plant pressing with the 6-eye label. The artist is credited as “The Art Blakey Percussion Ensemble” on both labels but the cover credits the B side to the Jazz Messengers.

Jackie McLean - Bluesnik

Great 1961 session with McLean (sax), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Kenny Drew (piano), Doug Watkins (bass), and Pete La Roca (drums).

While not every track is straight blues, it's definitely a blues-focused session, and really fun and enjoyable. Sounds great, too - although with Jackie hard right and Freddie hard left (and Drew center), the mix feels a little weird when Freddie's not playing.

I came across tubist Ray Draper recently when hearing recordings by Jackie McLean and Max Roach. This is his highly enjoyable 1957 debut as a leader. A year later he would also record with John Coltrane.

Jackie McLean - Jacknife

Interesting history on this 1965 session, which wasn't released until 1975 (on a double LP with another session).

No one knows why it was held back (including Alfred Lion, who did it). It's really good post-bop, and McLean is joined by Lee Morgan (trumpet), Charles Tolliver (trumpet), Larry Willis (piano), Larry Ridley (bass), and, in his debut (!), Jack DeJohnette.

Nice set of liner notes, too. A hidden gem.

Lee Morgan - Cornbread

Given this was recorded in '65, it starts off sounding more "late 60s" to me, for some reason.

Morgan, here, is joined by Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Larry Ridley (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums). The set is four Morgan tunes and one standard (Ill Wind). Ceora is, indeed, a standout.

Walter Davis Jr. - Davis Cup

1958 session by Davis, and his only as a leader for Blue Note…which is hard to believe given the quality of the release. Davis didn’t lead another session until…1979.

He’s joined by Jackie McLean (Alto), Donald Byrd (trumpet), Art Taylor (drums), and Sam Jones (bass).

Some Sunday evening #jazz with #malwaldron. Was at a record bar a couple of years ago and they were playing this and it was great. On the #bethlehem label and very reasonably priced ($10 I think, still in shrink). Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).

(Having played trumpet in my youth, it's hard to miss Hardman's use of his tongue to define his notes *very* explicitly during his runs… )

I was going to say that this is awfully close to post-bop for 1970, but then I read that it was recorded in 1967...so maybe not so unusual.

A very good session from McLean, Woody Shaw (trumpet), Jack DeJohnette (drums), Lamont Johnson (piano) and Scott Holt (bass). It's always fun to listen to DeJohnette, especially, go all out swinging (title track) and then pull way back on the next. He knows what to do...
