  1. Here's a fun exercise. I mentioned Roy Hargrove's earfood yesterday. One track, Mr. Clean, is Freddie Hubbard's, here in its original version (Hubbard/George Benson/Ron Carter/Jack DeJohnette/Herbie Hancock/Joe Henderson/Richard Landrum)::

  2. Jackie McLean - Bluesnik

Great 1961 session with McLean (sax), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Kenny Drew (piano), Doug Watkins (bass), and Pete La Roca (drums).

While not every track is straight blues, it's definitely a blues-focused session, and really fun and enjoyable. Sounds great, too - although with Jackie hard right and Freddie hard left (and Drew center), the mix feels a little weird when Freddie's not playing.

  3. i decided that using two bass guitars on top of each other on my "Red Clay" reggae remix didn't sound good enough, even if they were tuned differently... so i tried putting down the melody using my electric guitar! i've had this thing for about 20 years but i rarely play it and i've never used it on a recording before! to make it more like a bass, i took off the low E string and tuned it ADGCF... pretty fun :)

  4. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth

This post-bop classic from 1961 has a pretty incredible lineup of collaborators, including Bill Evans (piano), Roy Haynes (drums), Eric Dolphy (alto, flute), Oliver Nelson (tenor & alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Freddie Hubbard (trumpet). George Barrow (baritone sax) is not on the cover, because he doesn't solo, but everyone else does...and well.

  10. On the Verge of A Jazz Revival

In another column from the San Francisco Chronicle archive, this time Leonard Feather's column discusses a jazz revival observed in April 1971, highlighting the growing interest from youth bored with rock music. He reviews notable CTI records, praising works by Hubert Laws, Bill Evans, and Dave Frishberg. Feather suggests that jazz is

  14. Bill Evans - Interplay

Jim Hall is featured so much on this great album that I'm surprised he's not considered the leader.

Anyway, great new mastering on OJC/Craft of this 1962 classic with Evans (piano), Hall (guitar), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Percy Heath (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Essential music, mastering, pressing, and if you've only got an old copy, worth the upgrade.

  20. Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue

Hutcherson is the band leader here, on his first released (but 2nd recorded) solo album, but the pieces are all by Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers.

Then again, these works are *highly* improvisational post-bop. Hutcherson, Hill and Chambers are joined by Sam Rivers on tenor sax, Richard Davis on bass and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet.

  21. Herbie Hancock, Empyrean Isles, 1964 on Blue Note

Early jazz Herbie Hancock – this was his fourth studio LP for Blue Note, backed by Freddie Hubbard on cornet, Ron Carter on bass, and Anthony Williams on drums. Recorded on June 17th, 1964 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

The most well known track here is “Cantaloupe Island” which became something of a standard and was sampled in US3’s song “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” in […]

  22. Sounds: Supermarket Jazz

It's fairly well know that Creed's production techniques were not universally liked. Creed himself knew that and was often quite dismissive of critics in general. I've often quoted Creed himself on this, as early as 1963 he said:

These men[musicians], no longer concern themselves with critical limitations, imposed by journalists within the jazz frat

  29. The Alternate Blues - Terry / Hubbard / Gillespie + Peterson

This is the first of Acoustic Sounds Pablo reissue series, featuring three great horn players - Dizzy, Freddie and Clark Terry. With them, Oscar Peterson (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Ray Brown (bass) and Bobby Durham (drums).

A good time was had by all. Pretty great.

(I hope the money Pablo saved on this cover art was given to the artists…)

Thanks to Doug at #AbsoluteVinyl in #LongmontCO my favorite record dealer for this great copy of #FreddieHubbard Art of Freddie Hubbard 2x LP compilation of his Atlantic years.

I don't own any of Freddie's Atlantic albums, except "Songmy" which I wrote about recently and this has 2x tracks from that.
