According to Wikipedia:
“Dorham shared a stage with Miles Davis in 1956. According to Davis's biography, after the performance, Jackie McLean "looked me straight in the eye and said, 'Miles, tonight Kenny is playing so beautiful, you sound like an imitation of yourself.’””
That'd be this same year and, indeed, he's playing great on this album.

Kenny Dorham - The Complete 'Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia
Recent Tone Poet release of this classic 1956 set, expanded with the tracks added in the 1984 Japan release, plus more.
Dorham and the band (J. R. Monterose (tenor), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Bobby Timmons (piano), Sam Jones (bass), andArthur Edghill (drums)) are locked in and playing great.
Beautiful mono recording, mastering, pressing. Highly recommended.

Cliff Jordan, Cliff Jordan, 1957 on Blue Note
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack NJ, Jordan is joined by John Jenkins (alto sax), Art Taylor (drums), Ray Bryant (piano), Curtis Fuller (trombone) and Lee Morgan (trumpet). This is one of two Blue Note LPs he put out in 1957 (the other was Blowing in From Chicago with John Gilmore). My copy—via Amazon—is the 2024 Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue, with lacquer by Kevin Gray and pressing at RTI. Horace Silver Quintet, Silver’s Serenade, 1963 on Blue Note
The quintent here is Silver joined by Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Junior Cook (tenor sax), Gene Taylor (bass), and Roy Brooks (drums). Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs, with Alfred Lion producing. My copy—via Amazon—is another Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue from 2024. Yes, I realize there are other jazz labels and other reissue series - but so many of these are so good they are hard to resist.https://goatless.org/2026/04/25/horace-silver-quintet-silvers-serenade-1963-on-blue-note

Harold Vick, Steppin’ Out!, 1963 on Blue Note
Debut album from Harold Vick (as a leader), recorded Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with a wonderful supporting cast: Blue Mitchell, Grant Green, John Patton, and Ben Dixon.
Vick would also go on to play with folks like King Curtis and Aretha Franklin, and passed in 1987. Great album of early 60s Blue Note jazz.

Time for some #Coltrane - an #NC native! Add to that one of my favorite trumpet players - #LeeMorgan. Playing one of only a few #BlueNote #TonePoet issues I have…I love the way they sound, but I don’t know that they sound any better than the Classic Vinyl Series reissues…which are also absolutely fantastic. (And were on sale last week…I may have been a bit irresponsible…)
But I’m sure some audiophile with a much more expensive system will claim there is a huge difference…
Tone Poet or not it sounds amazing. Someday I need to get the RVG stereo mix.

Sonny Clark Trio, Sonny Clark Trio, 1958 on Blue Note
Sonny Clark with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1957 in Hackensack. Liner notes by Leonard Feather, cover designed by Reid Miles.
Love these renditions of “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” and “Two Bass Hit” – and the “I’ll Remember April” with just Clark solo on piano is wonderful too. Classic Blue Note jazz – you can’t go wrong.
My copy (via Academy Records in NYC) is from the Blue Note Tone Poet Series, mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray.

Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique
Another excellent Hutcherson release, this one from 1967, featuring Herbie Hancock (piano), Albert Stinson (bass), and Joe Chambers (drums).
Close mic’ed in the RVG style, with Chambers’ cymbal work super prominent in the mix and mastering. Lots of interesting harmonic work; overall a really great listen.

#NowSpinning #Infinity by #LeeMorgan. This is yet another Christmas pressie & another great album. I’m a total #LeeMorgan nut & against the prevailing opinion, I think this is a really strong set. Infinity, Nettie B. & Dolls, in particular, stand out.
As with all the #TonePoet’s, this is top quality stuff. Top notch jacket, flat centred vinyl, mastered beautifully by #KevinGray & the SQ is incredible.

McCoy Tyner - "Extensions" (1972)
This #TonePoet release is stunning. Super quiet background, dynamic, channel separation that really jumps out at you. It actually sounds better than my original pressing, which is no small feat.

Big John Patton - Let 'Em Roll
Here's a 1965 soul jazz set from Patton (B3), Grant Green (guitar), Otis FInch (drums) and Bobby Hutcherson (vibes). It's hard *not* to see this as influencing Medeski, Martin, Scofield and Woods. But even if not, it's great.
Nice new Tone Poet version, with the packaging and pressing you'd expect.

Sunshine & blazing heat is perfect for some West Coast #jazz. So I’m #NowSpinning #LeeKonitz Plays with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet & it’s a swinging, toe-tapping delight. Carson Smith, in particular, is stand out, particularly on the opening track. Oh, & Chet Baker makes an appearance.
This is another #TonePoet cut by #KevinGray & it really is well done. Great SQ, well put together & this particular copy cost me £3.99. Yep you read that right.

If I could afford it I would only collect OG #bluenote records, and while still mostly gravitate toward them, the #tonepoet reissues are done so well they are hard to pass up as gap fillers. Love this one. What a lineup and session. #jazz #jazzrecords #jazzvinyl #records @vinylrecords

Moving on from The Doors & #NowListening to #ArtBlackey & the Jazz Messengers #LiveInTokyo from the #TonePoet series. This is one of my favourite reissues from last year from one of my favourite ensembles: #WayneShorter, #BobbyTimmons, #JymieMerritt & the transcendent #LeeMorgan.
#BlueNote have again done a fantastic job with this, quality sleeve, booklet, clean flawless pressing, & dynamic mastering from #BernieGrundman. & the music incredible.
