  1. Cliff Jordan, Cliff Jordan, 1957 on Blue Note

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack NJ, Jordan is joined by John Jenkins (alto sax), Art Taylor (drums), Ray Bryant (piano), Curtis Fuller (trombone) and Lee Morgan (trumpet). This is one of two Blue Note LPs he put out in 1957 (the other was Blowing in From Chicago with John Gilmore). My copy—via Amazon—is the 2024 Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue, with lacquer by Kevin Gray and pressing at RTI. Although they used the "mono" labels here and the spine also says mono, the LP is […]

  2. Here are two versions of John Coltrane playing the Billy Eckstine ballad, "I Want to Talk About You." First, from "Soultrane" (1958).

  5. Walter Davis Jr. - Davis Cup

1958 session by Davis, and his only as a leader for Blue Note…which is hard to believe given the quality of the release. Davis didn’t lead another session until…1979.

He’s joined by Jackie McLean (Alto), Donald Byrd (trumpet), Art Taylor (drums), and Sam Jones (bass).

  6. Dizzy Reece - Blues in Trinity

1958 debut of Reece, paired up with Donald Byrd (trumpet), Tubby Hayes (sax), Terry Shannon (piano), Lloyd Thompson (bass), and Art Taylor (drums).

Knowing that it was a RvG recording, I was surprised that the piano didn’t sound as muted. Turns out it was recorded in England, and not in RvG’s studio.

Anyway, nice, blues-y hard bop. Hayes absolutely rips his solo on track 1…

  7. Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).

  8. Sticking with that smooth #jazz swing & #NowListening to #ByrdInParis by #DonaldByrd with #BobbyJaspar, #WalterDavisJunior, #DougWatkins, & #ArtTaylor - another live offering from the exceptional #SamRecords, based out of Paris.

This is a typically high quality issue - well presented, very well mastered, & impeccably pressed. The performance is really strong - you can really hear the room & the musicianship is top par.
