  2. Was just speaking with an attorney friend in British Columbia.

Told me one of his colleagues tried to cross the border and was asked by the #BorderStasi what their views on #trump were.

They replied "I'm #Canadian, I'm not really informed enough about American politics to have an opinion."

They turned her around and wouldn't let her in.

Now, why was I talking to said lawyer friend in #Canada?

Because I'm working on taking a job with a law firm up there to #immigrate. It's gonna be a process ... but I'm out of here.

@kkarhan @Nonilex Honestly I want to #immigrate to a different country before that happens but every time I talk about wanting to immigrate I get reminded about how much Ukraine needs more attention and how the US is such a wonderful place with so much freedom and democracy. Like fuck I guess the US needs to be a full #dictatorship with people needing to be smuggled out of the country before people realize what's going on

  4. Should I from to ? I don't have much money to leave with. Please boost for reach!

If you were curious about my legal permission to breathe within this un-submerged Earthling solid angle,
    it's that.

If any UK book botherers want to enlighten me, please do.
Thank you for exactly zero legal advice in advance.

I will not be relying on it at all. (And frankly am at non-zero chance of forgetting it soon after.)

It is my understanding I'll maintain the same status but lapsed proof.

It is my experience and expectation that I'll become undocumented, and therefore human scum [sic].

#Melania Trump sponsored her mother to #immigrate to the #UnitedStates through a family-based process that #Trump aggressively sought to end, acc/to federal #immigration records released Mon.

The records detail for the first time the full path that the fmr first lady’s mother, Amalija Knavs, followed from Slovenia to the #US — & how the Trump admin’s policies would have made that far more difficult for others.

  11. A two-year ban on some foreigners buying homes in Canada has come into effect.

The ban aims to help ease one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the world.

As of this summer, the average home price in Canada is C$777,200 ($568,000; £473,700) - more than 11 times the median household income after taxes.

Some have been critical of the ban, saying it is unclear what impact it will have on Canada's housing market.

Non-Canadian residents make up less than 6% of homeowners in Ontario and British Columbia, where national statistics indicate home prices are the highest.

As of 1 January, the ban prohibits people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents from buying residential properties, and imposes a C$10,000 fine on those who breach it.

In late December - 11 days before the ban came into effect - the Canadian government announced some exemptions to the regulation, including for international students who have been in the country for at least five years, refugee claimants and people with temporary work permits.

In a statement, federal housing minister Ahmed Hussen said the ban is meant to discourage buyers from looking at homes as commodities instead of a place to live and grow a family.

"Through this legislation, we're taking action to ensure that housing is owned by Canadians, for the benefit of everyone who lives in this country," Mr Hussen said.

While housing prices in Canada dipped slightly in 2022, they remain much higher than a decade ago.

Housing prices were up 48% last year compared to 2013, when the average price of a home was C$522,951.

Meanwhile, the average household income for Canadians has struggled to keep pace to rising home prices. The latest data indicates the median after-tax household income grew 9.8% from 2015 to 2020.

These numbers set Canada's housing market up as one of the most unaffordable in the world, ranking the country higher than New Zealand, the US and the UK, according to a Statista analysis of house-price-to-income ratios.

New Zealand passed a similar legislation banning foreign homebuyers in 2018 as the country grappled with its own housing affordability crisis.

However, inflation-adjusted home prices have continued to rise since the ban came into effect.

Edit : I managed to find an expert opinion on this.

Experts say increasing supply by building more homes faster is one obvious solution to help meet demand for housing, and the federal government has promised to help municipalities speed up construction.

But the types of homes being built also matters, says Singh. "If you build 1.5 million homes and if they're not affordable ... that's just going to lead to investors scooping up more of the supply."

Paul Kershaw, an associate professor of public policy at the University of British Columbia and his think-tank, Generation Squeeze, have proposed a "modest" surtax on homes worth more than $1 million, that would see most owners pay between $400 and $1,000 when a home is sold or inherited.

That small sum, Kershaw said, would add up to billions of dollars in annual revenue that the federal government could invest into affordable rentals and cooperative housing units, as well as rebates for renters.

"I think this is very much a political policy, more than an economic policy," says Brendon Ogmundson, chief economist at the British Columbia Real Estate Association.

"A lot of the public has been convinced over the last few years that it's foreign investors and foreign money that are driving home prices, rather than what's actually doing it: low interest rates and very low supply."

So something like who is perceived to be a "deserving" #immigrant? Importantly I am curious about #surveys which include < the impact of #climatechange > as a reason. #sociology #socmasto #academia
